Mesut Özil

I am in favour of signing Ozil. The only caveat being the "childhood Barcelona fan" shit.

yes,a younger better version would be silly

They're nothing alike as players, nevermind that berbatov is more consistent and fitter than Özil.

In what way is Özil better anyway? Ooooh he had a good world cup in comparison to someone who wasn't there.

Also Özil isn't a striker, a position where we need depth, whereas berbatov is.

a nice one when your wife blows me
:boring:

I think Ozil's best position will be a no.10 or a second striker,I happen to think he is better than Berbatov. If you don't concur then good for you but that is my opinion.

Thinking ozil is better that berbatov is fine, as you said that's your opinion but the idea that we're doing a swap deal with a player fergie has stated is a united player and is an important one at that is odd.

It comes across as an agenda post really

Do you think that this guy is Ozil's agent?:smirk:

We rarely use the swap deal anyway. We'd only ever sell Berbatov if a great offer came in for him, he's an overpriced asset that we bought, selling him on would be a mistake imo. It's best to keep him and hope he changes things round. But thats for a different thread!

Ozil, imo there isn't anyone in the team that plays like him. I haven't seen Berbatov playing some of the passes he produced in the WC. Ozil actually reminds me more of a very young Veron. Finding space between the strikers and midfield and playing technical passes to the forwards. One thing I liked about him is that he rarely plays the ball backward, he always looks to play it forward.

At such a young age, he'd be an excellent addition to our squad. Infact, I actually think he's the missing link, the missing piece in the puzzle. We need a player of Ozils ability to provide a threat from midfield as when Scholes is off the pitch we struggle to get the ball upto the strikers in space. Ozil will provide that.

Sunday Times saying that us and Arsenal have asked to be kept informed by Werder Bremen about any developments and are interested in signing him, others (Real and Barca) are interested but he's a second choice option for them.

I'd link it, but of course, it's locked away behind their paywall

Why would we need to be informed about development in things regarding him when we could simply make a bid?

As for Berbatov swap, there's no way Bremen could afford his wages or that he would go there at this point of his career.

He's born in 1988 so the question becomes if we do sign him whose place in the squad does he take? (seeing as we're on 25/25 over 21s in the squad at the moment)

I think that's the main thing being missed by a lot of the transfer crowd at this point in time - if we sign someone born before 1989 it will literally be in place of someone in the squad at this point in time

Are you counting Hargreaves as a numbered member of the squad? If not then [AGENDA POST] why not release Owen from his contract, I'd much rather see Hernandez/Macheda get a crack of the whip than a crocked has been.

I'd rather not see Owen released for Ozil - he's currently third choice and to drag out the old cliche he's proven at Premiership level. If we're looking to make room by lightening the striking load then I'd rather see Diouf go on loan to play regularly.

Actually that's a good point with the Hargreaves thing, I didn't consider that.

The squad has to be finalised by the end of the transfer window as I understand it, so if we signed him you could assess Hargreaves fitness before September 1 and see if he can play before January.

In honesty I think we'll see either Diouf or De Laet go on loan.

Why give up on Owen when its Berbatov that has failed to deliver on 100k a week. Owen is on a pay as you play deal.

I guess to know whether someone else has made a bid

Yeah, but that doesn't really make any sense - if someone makes a bid, then we won't buy him for a simple fact that we won't want to be engaged in bidding wars, and if no one makes a bid we will probably not act anyway for a pure reason that there's still time. Lose-lose kind of situation.

Is that for definite, as he's still 21 and would still be 21 when the season starts, he's 22 in October (according to Wiki)

I found this in a DailyMail article

Clubs can also supplement their 25- man squad with a B-list, featuring as many players as they want who were under the age of 21 at the start of the previous January

So, would the player have to be under 21 or 21 or under, as last January he was still 21

If he can't get his dream move to Barca he'll sign an improved contract with Bremen

I'm not going to get into a conversation about Berbatov, I believe he is one of the most talented players we have at the club and I'm sure he'll prove all the doubters wrong this season.

Owen on the other hand is incredibly injury prone (and slow to recover), glacially slow compared to when he was in his prime, taking up a valuable spot in the squad and would be relatively cheap to dispose of.

It's done entirely off year of birth (ie what age they turn in that calender year). So players born in 1989 (1990, 1991, 1992) don't have to be registered. Players born in 1988 (for us that's Hernandez, Anderson and De Laet) do have to be registered.

Fair enough, I just wanted to check as I'd not seen it definitively anywhere, so ta
