Heinze was the only castoff, though Ferguson did want Beckham out for mostly non-football reasons. Van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo engineered their moves, really.

I won't be surprised if Beckham engineered his transfer to Real too. I mean his attitude nosedived just 1 year before leaving United + once he was on the transfer market he refused to even talk with Barcelona (not Bolton or Fulham but Barca) and stated that he would only leave for the Galacticos.

Bollocks, Ruud would have stayed at utd for life if given the chance.

Well, possibly, but he effectively demanded to be in the team even if playing badly. He threw a strop after being dropped - for a couple of games! - and demanded a move. We don't really need players like that in this day and age.

Van Nistelrooy, Beckham and Ince all let their egos get the better of them and were got rid of, rightly in my view. All top players in their time.

I agree that we were right to sell all three, Ferguson's decisions have been vindicated. Beckham and Ruud always planned to stay at utd, their ego's got the best of them and they believed they were untouchable, Fergie has never stood for that.

I think it is certain.

It took him 18 months of negotiations to sign his final United contract, the club he apparently wanted to stay at for life.

1 day after United accepted a bid from Real Madrid, he had agreed and signed his contract.

No freaking way was that actually sorted inside a day.

Fair enough - that may be true. I'm not totally sure it is, but it may be.

On a purely practical level we should be able to convince him that at Utd he'll be given a chance, he will improve as a player at utd. Benzema missed out on the world cup because he went to that sham of a club over us.

Benzema supported Real and he had a realistic chance of making it at Real. His only competitor to a first team shirt was Higuian whom according to the media he wasn't really happy at Real during that time. Ozil situation may be different. Its hard to break into a team who already has players like Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Pedro and would probably end up getting Fabregas too. Not to forget that if Ozil does manage to take a first team place over a homegrown talent then he may end up being shown the cold shoulder by the rest. Ganging up in football isn't as rare as one may thinl expecially when there is a strong contingent of players from the same nation.

I don't agree with the bold part.

The thing is i dont think wed have much of a problem appealing to Ozil, i dont think wed have to do much convincing at all, hes already spoken in glowing terms about us on more than one occasion once when we apparently tried to sign him a day before the window closed a couple of years ago, and with the chance to play regularly (which is maybe something of all his suitors only we could 100% gurantee) i think hed love to come here.

I just doubt we'll make a move for him.

some sections of the italian media are claiming that ozil to barcelona is almost a deal done although no official quotes are being mentioned. So it could be yet another pie in the sky

Why would he though, great club that it is where will he play?

On another note, if he went there, would Arsenal have Barca off their backs?

Players don't seem to apply logic to moves.

Canales to Real Madrid.

Fabregas wanting a move to Barcelona.

Bellamy signing for City (it did actually work out, but I thought it was a strange move - he must have known he would not last long)

Robinho to City.

Loads of players are lured by the big teams and big cash - not really thinking of where, or how often, they will play.

I do agree Ozil would be far more likely to play first team football elsewhere. Don't see him getting into the midfield - not taking Iniesta out of the side, and based on the current squad he would be up against Pedro and Villa for the LW position.

He's indicated we're one of the four clubs that he would like to join (the others being Chelsea, Barca and Real). Now you can never know for sure when you're talking about Real (although Mourinho might install some sanity there) and maybe even Barca these days, but you wouldn't think either of those two would go for him considering they are already extremely well stocked in players of his type and position. Chelsea might be a bit more realistic, but I haven't seen them linked to him (yet).

I think Mourinho wants defenders and defensive midfielders. How much control Mourinho exerts over the powers that be at Real Madrid is another question. Real Madrid need the likes of Vidic (:nervous:) before they need Ozil.

I thought Barca had to take out a loan to pay their players. With Iniesta, Xavi and now Villa they are pretty well situated in the creative midfield department. And wouldn't they be anticipating getting Fabregas eventually, if not this summer perhaps next summer?

Chelsea have Lampard and Deco, but they could use Ozil up top or on the wing I suppose. But Chelsea have the opportunity of spending the big money to bring in Torres, since Liverpool and Manchester United would never do business. Torres will never play for Real Madrid, and Barcelona can't find that much money for a player they don't really need.

I really think United is Ozil's best bet, but the World Cup can make players look better than they are when they play in the Premiership. I expect the club won't wish to overpay for a 21 year old who may or may not be suited for the English game. If the price doesn't meet United's valuation, then we'll have to consign this thread to the dustbin along with the massive Benzema thread last summer, and the even more massive Fernando Torres thread many summers ago.

No fecking chance.. He was a Man Utd fan/Player through and through.. Also lets not forget Barca were going through a horrible patch.. This was the year before they signed Ronaldinho.. So hope that puts stuff into perspective.. Also Barca were a club just like United.. Limited sponsorships, Smaller fees, Smaller Signing on fee Yada Yada Yada.. If Beckham left united it was only going to be for Real Madrid..

That probably could have something to do with the fact that the both Barcelona (who bid a higher amount of money for Beckham than Real) and Real themselves were given permission to speak to him and his agent well in advance.. Also the ridiculous salary on offer at real post tax made him earning well more than he was earning at united..

Bollocks, Ruud would have stayed at utd for life if given the chance.

Rubbish there were confirmed quotes about him having requesting a transfer 2 summers in a row..

Exatly and of the 4 clubs that he said he would be interested in.. He would directly walk into contention for the starting 11 only here..

Chelsea have Lampard
Real have Kaka, VDV, Canales etc etc
Barca have Iniesta, & They want Fabregas (although if that fails then we should most be afraid of Barca)

But yet the point remains he would walk into our starting 11... SAF has been known to be interested in the past..

I remember at Euro2004, an Adidas official on live TV said that his company knew of the Real Madrid transfer a full 18 months before it actually happened. Make of that what you will...

Wrong.

Don't know about Beckham, but Ruud handed in a transfer request twice or thrice before eventually leaving(one of them was very close to the FA CUP Final 2005)

Beckham has always said that he wanted to finish his career at Old Trafford and that he was taken by surprise when he was told that we would sell him.

As for Ruud, yes, he put in a transfer request but that doesn't mean that he hadn't had the intention to stay at United for life when he signed for us. Even in his press conference in Madrid he said that he loved United and that he had hoped to stay there but that the relationship with Fergusion was on the rocks. His departure had nothing to do with Manchester United but with SAF.

its not so simple. players who are elite professionals think differently than you or me. They have a level of self-confidence and arrogance (which is necessary to compete at the top level IMO) and feel that they can and will play even at the biggest clubs because they are that confident in their abilities.

And his brand.

And his wife.

And his desire for more publicity and global fame.

Well the news wire seems to be hotting up again regarding Ozil. Werder Breman seem to have failed in their attempts to get him to extend his contract so now apparently want to get some money out of him.

Barcelona line up Mesut Ozil in case they fail to land Cesc - IMScouting
Report : Werder Bremen & Germany Starlet Mesut Ozil Available For £15m | Bleacher Report
Premier League | Manchester United backed to sign Ozil as Chelsea FC drift, latest odds from Sky Bet

I still dont think it will be a £12m -£15m'cut price' deal as some commentators seem to suggest as there will be competition from many clubs and a bidding war of sorts will develop.

I expect him to turn up with us or Chavski for around £20m + add ons. I'm hoping that the promise of immediately being a key part of our squad will swing it our way as he will have to compete with Obi Mikel for a starting place at the Chavs.

Not this summer we won't

He will move this summer - Werder Breman will not allow him to leave for nothing.

He either signs a new contract with them (which he won't as his star is so bright right now) or they sell him to the highest bidder.

Erm, he said that he wanted to fulfil his contract with United and then finish his career at PSV

If he was United through and through then he would have stopped the drama queen antics and act like a pro just like Scholes/Giggs/Gaz did.

Is this about to turn into a spot of Beckham bashing?

count me in!! Its been a while

The chavs seem to be interested in Ramires from benfica. Not that they cant sign both but doesnt seem to likely if they do indeed get ramires.

I'm trying to convince myself that this won't happen, so I don't get disappointed.

The muppet in me won't let that happen.

If you are actually suggesting that he is not united through and through then Iam sorry mate you know nothing about Beckham and his love for United.. Were you even old enough to watch him live while he was at united?

Viv Anderson reckons we already have a player playing the Ozil role. Berbatov.

He also said Rooney could also be employed in a similar role.

Just a messenger. Don't shoot me.
