Its an odd thread, there are some of us who want him at united due to his skill set and maturity and others who just want a big signing. everyone hanging onto every false media report and airport sightings is amusing but makes it worth while to watch :D

lets say we did sign him brwned, how do you see him fitting in? I see him as the left winger, ala current giggs who cuts in towards the middle and can play in the strikers and continue to link play with the midfield. He has enough guile to ghost into the box and is alway available, can dribble along the touch line enough to be a threat wide and with him looking to pass rather than shoot makes hims an excellent "assists" player.

He would be a drop off in work rate and defensive cover, something we ask of both our wingers. He may be more willing to work with some encouragement from Sir Alex but it wouldnt be up to the level of park and valencia.

I know it all, I was there in the Berbatov thread. It's just then we were all quite sure we were going to get him...seems the opposite here? Ah well, never mind!

I like the idea of playing him in Giggs' current role going forward, he's definitely got a lot of similarities in his play now. He's intelligent with his movement, he's a creative passer, he's a very nifty dribbler, and he'd naturally want to drift inside. There's two problems there though.

The first being, as you said, how we'd cope defensively. Not even with regards to covering that particular area/man, but just in pure numbers it wouldn't be right - as Capello's said, you need 9 outfield players defending and just one up top. I don't think it's in Ozil's nature to put in a shit, but then it wasn't in Ronaldo's nature either...there's ways to work around that. We worked around it by getting Rooney to drop back into positions vacated by Ronaldo, thus still in keeping with Capello's idea of 9:1 but making Ronaldo the 1. Do we want to see Rooney dropping back to cover for Ozil? Is he talented enough to warrant that kind of tactical change just for him? Can he even play as the 1?

The second being whether Ozil would be happy to move out to the wing at all, or if he's playing in Giggs' role, playing relatively deep too? We've seen that he relishes playing through the middle with the freedom to drift right across the line in the attacking third, would he be happy to restrict his freedom (and influence) for the good of the team? Obviously none of us can know so that's hardly a talking point, but it'll be a factor in the end.

If were to instead play him in behind the striker instead of Berbatov, then he's got that freedom to drift where he likes and pick the ball up off the midfield, and he'll play a very similar role to the one he played at Germany. In terms of satisfying his individual needs it'd be perfect. In terms of satisfying our team's needs I'm not so sure.

With us moving to a more possession-based game in the league now - as shown by the fact we had at least 50% possession in every league game bar one - will he help in that aspect? Is he more capable of helping the team retain the ball than Berbatov? I don't think so. Obviously with them being attackers that isn't the most important trait to have, but you'd think that the reason we brought in Berbatov was partly because of how good he is at keeping possession compared to pretty much every other striker, so it does matter. It could be that Sir Alex wants a different style of attacking and wants to play a quick, penetrative attacking game akin to how Germany played, and given the players we have it's not impossible, but with his comments about being unimpressed by Germany and this style going against everything he's said about possession in recent years I wouldn't think so.

Then there's still the problem about defending, and we've seen with Berbatov it is a problem - part of the reason he gets pulled out of the big games because he just doesn't contribute enough defensively to justify his place then - so why should we expect any different here? I don't think us having such an important player who can't play in the big games is a smart idea, nor do I expect it to be one that Ozil'd be happy to go along with. There is one possible difference in that a way of playing around this is to have Rooney have drop deep and Ozil push up and be the 1, and the reason we haven't seen this with Berbatov is because he's not capable of being the one given how quickly we hit the front-man on counter-attacks, often expecting him to drive at the defence himself with little support, whereas it's more in fitting with Ozil's style. Rooney can take on his role defensively, and him dropping in to press the defensive midfielder and be the first line of defence isn't quite as taxing or as problematic as him pulling out to the wing either, I don't think.

The big flaw in my entire argument is the idea that Ozil just doesn't have it in him to put in a shift defensively and thus needs a player to cover his ass, and that might be a complete misjudgement. I've no idea about his attitude, character and willingness to learn, and maybe he would happily try to learn the defensive side of the game to sacrifice his own attacking influence for the goof of the team. There's every chance Anderson did similarly little defending for Gremio, Brazil youth teams and Porto from what I've read, yet from his first minute on the pitch he's shown a real desire to put himself about and do his defensive work, and he's put in a lot of effort into developing his defensive game I think. So I could be entirely wrong about Ozil on that front, so essentially I'm talking rubbish!

I'm sure this has all been said anyway!

Oye! I posted an entire story you just posted a one liner from Ozil.. I posted what Holffes had to say about his fax machine and e-mail..

Did you have sweaty palms as well?

This thread will probably break records, not due to sheer transfer muppetry, but mostly due to the fact that every other post contributes to nothing but pointing out that this indeed thread has many pages and will get even more.

And can some people please get off their feckin high horses and stop calling the other a muppet in order to try to liberate themselves from such label. It's ridiculous.

We're all in this thread, aren't we. I actually reckon most of us do want us to bring in the player. I'll admit I'd love to see Özil in the red shirt.

Do we need him desperately? Of course not. Would he fit in perfectly? Possibly not, but with his talent and supposed fee it could definitely be worth a gamble and you know it.

Do I think it will happen? Probably not. But I'm pretty sure we're interested, just not sure how interested.

We're due to break some records in here(Berba/Benzema thread) so don't break our spirits.

Besides, it's Summer, no football yet, the only real activity is the transfer market - hence the long and disturbing threads.

Add to that it's a week before 17th(when Ozil will be cup tied) and there will be plenty of hoax, gossips and bullshits until he finally signes a contract or for somebody else.

The current ITK sources are pretty lame. If something is decided it'll be on SSN or BBC shortly, I'm not bothered to refresh this thread each 5 mins. However it is a pretty fun thread.:D

I don't trust SSN either.. They simply quote from other places now.. Even last year that Benzema's friend story was completely made up.. Then Just today they copied the ESPN story I posted in which Ozil in the BILD said he has heard nothing and nothing is happening.. And Holffes was talking about his Fax Machine and E-mails and what did Sky Sports do? Remove the Ozil bit and rename the story to Barcelona are rumoured to be close to Barca agreement.. Bizarre..

I will only ever trust BBC.. Eventhough the story might break a little later they atleast confirm their stories before posting them..

Stop trying to control every thread. :nono:

What? How am I trying to control this thread? By saying lets not post the same story 5 times over? Which other threads am I trying to control? Your probably just upset because you cant seem to be able to play any Fantasy league games with the rules provided..

Ozil could play as one of the three front men - in a 4-3-3 roaming across the front like we had with Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez.

Or he could play deeper in a midfield three with Fletcher and Carrick.

He could play off the front man in a 4-1-1. In fact he is quite adaptable. I think he played left wing for most of last season in a 4-4-2.

This thread is growing by the minute so, it is understandable some articles are being re-posted after a couple of pages. You need to stop whining about everything.

I'd be delighted if we got him, but I wouldn't be that disappointed if we didn't sign him.
We've got a great squad, with fantastic potentional.

I've complained about that before. You miss the real news amongst all the fluff. I guess you could have a separate News thread and leave this for discussion and wild speculation. But maybe that's too much hassle.

Guys please stop re-posting the same stories over and over again! I posted that same story 2 pages and 2 hours ago..

Oh pipe down. This thread is so popular pages just keep filling very quickly. Most probably can't be bothered searching through all the bullshit that is constantly being posted by the resident muppets.

20 minutes since last post in Ozil thread shocker!!!!!!!

Come on guys, don't be shy. Don't let a bit of name calling put you off from posting in this thread.

I think the press just made up the Barca story in order to force Bremen and Ozil to respond to the false story.

They get more quotes to dissect and can sell more papers.

The first would render Valencia a lot less useful, although it's a possibility yes. Would mean Anderson or Cleverley stepping up to take over Giggs' role in that team, which kept the fluidity very well.

We've seen nothing to suggest that, have we? By that logic we could play Berbatov in a midfield three too, could we not?

Off the front man in a 4-4-1-1, like Berbatov, yeah.

He definitely didn't play right wing in a 4-4-2 last season. Go here, click on any one of the games, go to 'match action' and then select average position...he's playing in the centre of the pitch in almost every game, with Marin and Hunt the wingers. And it's a 4231.

Fair enough. But I never said you were spamming.

Mesut Ozil 'will make Chelsea or Manchester United transfer', Werder Bremen confirm | Metro.co.uk

Take of this what you will. Just wish a line would be drawn underneath the whole damn thing now.

Surprise surprise that they don't actually say anything of the sort in the article - even though they try and indicate that by using the ' and ' in the title.

Actually, it is kinda interesting seeing how stories start and get repeated, dissected and reassembled and portrayed as new information...
