Messi?

With the transfer ban Barca would never accept anything less than his release clause which is about £200 million

His wages at Barcelona right now is £256,000 after tax to match that any English club would have to pay him about £470,000 pretax. Since he is a pretty descent footballer at the peak of his career we can assume that he would require at least a small wage increase so say about £500,000 a week.

If we add this up he would cost about £330 million add to that a sign on fee and agent fees and the total outlay towards FFP would be around £350million or £70 million per season.

United would get loads back though in shirt sales/new fans/new sponsers and other image rights by having Messi playing for the club.

He'd pay back his £200m transfer fee put it that way over the course of his contact, I'm sure Madrid said they got the £80m Ronaldo cost in a couple of months with shirt sales and what not, wages wouldn't be a problem, Rooney and Falcao are on £250,000 a week.

Why? With the transfer ban they can't do anything with the money. Also their president would never get re-elected if he sold Messi for anything less than the release clause.

I cannot see anyone paying 200M for any one player, I'm not saying it cannot happen, its just unfathomable to me.

Having said that Real stole Ronaldo from us for 80M. He shouldn't have left for under 100M.

I think we are legit the only club in the world who could afford him

De Gea
Rafael Carrick Rojo Shaw
Blind
Rooney Mata
Di Maria
Messi RvP

Let's do this!!

The myth that Ronaldo's transfer fee was quickly paid for in shirt sales really needs to die.

Not that they didn't end up with a bargain, but that just didn't happen.

I think Chelsea and Bayern are the only other two other clubs (Madrid is not in the running) that can afford him under FFP.

I didn't mean that I think anyone will pay the 200 million but I can never see Barca selling for anything less when they can't sign any new players for another year.

If there was even the slightest chance of him leaving Barca, Woodward would have a comedy sized blank cheque under his arm and be on the next flight to Catalonia.

The supposed shirt sales from Madrid is a myth. If they could make 80 million in a couple of months in only shirt sales from one single player their yearly revenue would be in the billions.

Sorry, but that's one terrible lineup. Doesn't make any sense. You're just shoe-horning all your stars in the lineup.

How do you know it's a myth have you seen their account records? I'm just going by what their president said, as for yearly revenue being in the billions, that's not how it works.

Right, just because I'll never have another chance to speculate about starting elevens with Messi included...

Rafael Smalling Rojo Shaw
Blind
Rooney Herrera
di Maria Messi Januzaj

Real Madrid sell around 1.5m shirts per year, at 85€. And they don't take 100% of the sales.

Wait, the Madrid president tells lies? Say it ain't so!!

Commercial income includes shirt sales plus all other commercial income for 2010. You don't really belive that 80 of those 135 millions were from Ronaldo shirts

Rooney not in his best position. ADM also in wing, which many fans don't like. Januzaj has been anonymous whole season. For me, you can't have both Rooney and Messi in the same team. They both like to drop deep and dictate play.

It's much easier to put Messi in Chelsea though. Just remove Oscar and insert Messi, or put Messi instead of Costa.

Pfff, you are just trying to dissuade us to purchase Messi. :smirk:

Woodward you know what to do lad!

Seriously though, how the feck are Chelsea supposed to pay for him with all those ffp regulations in place, same goes for City and PSG. Only logical destination for Messi if he were to move is, Bayern, Madrid and United.

I highly highly doubt he's going anywhere, but if there is one player ever worth spending over £100mill on, then it's Lionel Messi.

They will sell Willian, Cech and Remy to Liverpool for a combined £70m who will fund that by selling Sterling to City and Milner will go to Chelsea on a free while Shurrle will move to Zenit for £40m.

Messi has always talked about us (and Rooney) with a lot of respect. I'd imagine that in the remote possibility that he wanted to leave Barca, he would at least consider us. It also helps that we have two of his Argentinian teammates, and an even bigger Spanish contingent.

Real signing Messi would be insanely entertaining for various reasons. Kinda hope that happens.

And we:

  • are probably the only ones with the financial capacity to afford him.
  • have a chairman hellbent on raising our club profile past Madrid level.
  • are, profile wise, the only club he could move to that wouldn't be considered a step down.

All these pages and there isn't anything linking us to him, just Chelsea via Instagram.

If he is sold, then apart from a very few, select clubs, not many can afford him. I doubt this is true, and just looks like an attempt by Messi and co. to put pressure on the board.

Question: Would you sell Old Trafford's naming rights if it meant we could purchase Messi?

It's a tough one, but I think I could put up with the Pepsi Stadium to see Messi play for us.

To be fair, Instagram was our most reliable source over the summer. The account everybody should be looking at, though, is that of Messi's wife, if she has one.

Heh! True, but even then this is not a United story but we have pages of people posting like it is us being linked with him and how we could fit him into our formation, the answer obviously being him and De Gea would be first on the team sheet and everyone else would be fitted in from there.
