Messi vs Ronaldo|2011-2012

He's just saying what's obvious really.

But to be fair, some of you are talking as if their careers have come to an end. Ronaldo has a long time to push ahead in this race. But he does have his work cut out.

I doubt he can. Messi is a few good levels above the Ronaldo and the rest. As good as the rest are, the distinct difference in ability is just too much to overtake. Ronaldo can only overtake Messi if the latter has mental/physical breakdown or that he loses interest at some point.

I agree that it's unlikely but I'd like to believe someone like Rooney can one day be the best in the world even though it might be unlikely. So I don't like to think that the debate on the best in the world is ever over. It has to be constantly had for changing circumstances.

The only circumstance that will ever make Rooney BPITW is Messi dropping his level.

And he's still got some way to go even if that happens.

Is their a distinction to be made between comparing players to the best in the world and comparing teams? You seem happy enough to compare Rooney and Ronaldo to Messi, but seem to agree with Cnut that we shouldn't compare United themselves to Barcelona. I'm not sure I see a difference?

No shame in that. It would be like saying that Nadal and Djokovic's recent victories are tainted by a decline in Federer's standards - that's just the way sport goes, surely.

It's simple. Who will you choose if you can have only 1 of Ronaldo and Messi? Messi for me. Easy

All the attributes and debates, simply goes to question 1, which one of them.

Not on a united board. Some folk who are still daft enough to say Ronaldo for reasons other than him not being as good as Messi.

Messi has Xavi et al backing him up. Switch Ronaldo and Messi for a season, and I wonder who'd look better?

There.

And you're blind as a bat, apparently.

Who cares? I would love if a United player was the best in the world irrespective of whether the best players before him weren't as good as they once were.

I know he's got a long way and I doubt it will happen. But I don't think you can close the book on things like this. There will be constant debate on topics such as this.

I fully agree. I was trying to get at something like I don't see Messi doing a Ronaldinho. And Rooney is two years older. Think it will take a long injury layoff for someone to displace him anytime soon.

Ronaldo doesn't have donkeys behind him. Ozil was the top chance creator in Laliga last season. He's far more likely to set you through on goal than Xavi.

The assists Ozil and Di Maria provided for him were way more than what Xavi and 'esta provided for the argentine last season.

There will be some games I'll prefer Ronaldo on my aside and some where Messi would be preferable.

That's the beauty of the two being different.

Welcome back Boss.

And I don't think there is this huge gap between Ronaldo and Messi. I think Messi's performances are accentuated by the way Barcelona plays. I think Ronaldo's role in the Madrid team is detrimental to the other skills he possesses, which had us raving from 2006 to 2008. But it's justified by the shitload of goals that he scores.

Ronaldo's 'other skills' went missing in almost direct correlation to how many goals he scored. He is not different today from the player he was in his last two seasons at united. Except that he may be a better flat track bully now.

Nah, that's rubbish. 07-08 was his perfect season.

Thanks for the help. Was a perfectly innocent question by the way...

It wasn't. I never actually said those words so I can't really relate to what you're referring to. If it's the 'obsession' thread then I simply believe that some people are just that and it's unhealthy (as the OP did). If it's the Cleverley thread, then I was wondering why one would assume such a thing as the poster seemed to do (which he wasn't and there were facts to back it up and I said it made sense if that was the case). People can make any comparisons they want to make. But as with anything, an excessive amount is regressive rather than constructive.

I think you're getting his gameplay from the season before that mixed up with his goals that season.

That season he carried us, in terms of general play and goal scoring, in the final third. His presence alone pinned the opposition winger and full back in their half. Always. Sure he wasn't dribbling as much, his movement made up for it.

Djokovic maybe but not Nadal. Nadal's beaten him at his best as well.

how is he a different player now, other than scoring 10 more goals a season?

He played as a conventional winger in a 4-4-2, in 95% of his games that season, which is what made the feat amazing. In a more competitive league. Now he's a hybrid striker/winger in a 4-3-3.

he didnt... the day everyone realized just what Ronaldo was actually capable of is the day he stopped playing as a conventional winger.

Both are great players, right now even Ronaldo has admitted Messi is the better but it can always change in football. Ronaldo will have another year at the top for a few reasons. Injury can play a part and most importantly the dominance of Barcelona. Madrid will win the league and the CL in the next few years i'd wager and then this argument will be back in full swing.

It's not going away ever probably.

I recall us playing with Rooney and Tevez in most games up front, with Ronaldo on the right (albeit with less defensive responsibility). Agree with the rest of your post.

Nah, that's misty-eyed nostalgia. Ronaldo was given free licence to attack at will and spent the bulk of his time pushing on past the (other) striker(s).
