So again these two should be the stand outs for this season in La Liga and quite possibly in european football. On tonight's evidence even a half fit Messi just seems to be a class above Ronaldo. So what are people's expectations this year, Messi to continue his dominance or can anyone see Ronaldo really stepping up to a level that he hasn't before?

Any comparisons and fan boy debates regarding these two will hopefully be kept in this thread, so it stops people from derailing the individual Messi and Ronaldo watch threads.

Messi is in another stratosphere to Ronaldo and any other footballer on earth. It would be useless comparing both of them when the situation is as such.

We must do justice to Messi by comparing him to someone actually worthy of the comparison. Greatest player of the last 15-20 years.

Just another excuse for certain posters to carry on having the same old argument. Most people know what the actual answer is though.

Might be worth a thread if you said Messi V Fat Ronaldo, now it's just pointless.

2 games, Messi 3 goals, Ronaldo 1.

60 goals for Messi this season?

It's not even a contest. What sets Ronaldo apart from the rest of the pack these days is how deadly he is in front of goal.

Unfortunately for him, Messi is just as deadly, but with a completely ridiculous assortment of extra tricks up his sleeve. He'll dribble three or four players for fun, play an absolutely sensational weighted through-ball or use his vision to create an opening with a one-two. And he's got the team mates that let him use all of his strengths to the fullest as well.

And of course, all of this is on top of pretty much scoring as much as Ronaldo. Like I said, it really isn't a contest.

I'd even go as far as to say that the next batch of players are closer to Ronaldo than he is to Messi. For me the only thing separating Ronaldo from for instance Wayne Rooney is that he is a better and more prolific goal-scorer.

You are forgetting his work ethic and ability to win the ball.

He has the work rate of Rooney and then the genius of his own self.

Yep, it's a bit shit when it starts taking over the whole football forum. It's just the same characters though, spouting the same things every couple of weeks.

Yeah you're absolutely right about that. It's easy to forget because of all of his far more dazzling attributes!

I am a Ronaldo person but I have to confess Messi is now in a different league. Ronaldo can't even beat a man anymore (his bread and butter at United), he is just another small team bully now.

It's a sad sight, he was in Alves pocket and Alves is not even a great defender. In both legs he struggled in one on one situations.

Ronaldo scores alot of goals, but his all round game and footballing brain is lacking, I'd even say Rooney is better here.

Messi should not be compared to Ronaldo anymore, I said it 2 seasons ago but his fans wouldn't let go.

Messi's asisst to Iniesta was just sweet though. Fantastic passer.

On a side note I hope Villa gets banned for 20 games for touching my boy Ozil.

edit-I also feel that Ronaldo desperately trying to stop Messi scoring here and failing is pretty iconic in these debates:

It'll be great to see what weird and wonderful stats the fanboy's come up with this year.

'Yeh but Ronnie's won Madrid ten more throw-in's'.

Speaking of throw ins, why don't they just hammer balls into Barca's box. They have a significant size difference, maybe doing a stoke is the way to beat Barca.

It is indeed sad to watch. He used to majestic for United, so creative, so intelligent and yet extremely deadly.

But hey if any one can ruin one of the greatest players it is Real Madrid.

He's hardly ruined, he's still one of the greatest players in the world.

53 goals last season is testimony to that, he should win second place in the fifa world player awards.

The lad is a goal machine and always will be.

TBH I think its his own doing as well. Ronaldo loves being the center of attention and there is no better way than scoring shitloads.

Its weird sitting here and saying "its sad" to see him play this way when he's scored over 50 goals last season but Ronaldo is capable of much much more.

Have I missed something here? Ronaldo is still fecking quality. He's the 2nd best player in the world. Messi is just incredible week in week out, he's inhumane. Ronaldo can't keep up with that but he's by no means declined since leaving United.

He is clearly the greatest, but I say he is ruined because he is just not influential in the big games any more, the ones that really count to win trophies. He scored 53 goals last season where he bullied small teams and he has become more of a goal machine, his creativity all round and intelligent passing has really diminished. Even against the small teams he is not that influential, he is just clinical. Definitely still a great player, but he could be so much more!

Couldn't agree more. When a person scores 53 goals in a season he should be winning everything there is to win. But even after 53 goals his season seems as a disappointment. I miss the tricky winger that played for United.

Probably because Messi is doing what he does but more and winning trophies. He said he wanted to win more than he did at United but does that look realistic with Barcelona dominating La Liga. Doesn't look like they're ready to stop any time soon as well.

Agreed. Hopefully we can see more Ronaldo and Rooney comparisons this year instead.

In terms of statistics Rooney is going to find it incredibly difficult to match up against Ronaldo. I suspect Ronaldo will score around 10-20 goals more than Rooney

Agreed, Ronaldo is always going to score more but I think Rooney should create more chances and make more assits as Wayne has more to his game.

If he improves on his goal scoring form in 2009/10 then hopefully the gap in goals wouldn't be too much this year.

Ronaldo vs Rooney is an interesting debate, but they're very different players. Ronaldo vs Aguero is more in my line of thinking.

Rooney vs Suarez will be the debate in the league this year, since they match up very well in terms of playing style and positions.

I noticed that, too. I remember how I hated Ronaldo back when he was with MU because he seemed unstoppable when he was getting in his rhythm. It just feels that despite his success with Madrid he never quite regained the same confidence.

Apart from goal( was it offside, btw?) I thought he was disappointing. Messi once again showing him up with another brilliant performance of course didn't help.

It was quite sad & painful to watch.

I've not watched that much of him recently but from what I have seen Ronaldo looks to have gone too far with the beefing up and he's now so big he's lost some of his agility. He's obviously still a total machine when it comes to putting the ball in the back of the net, but he's a different player to the one who pissed on the PL.

Ronaldo pretty much plays like a striker now and to be fair, he scores a shit load of goals. We all know he has more talent than that though, but maybe he isn't working on them parts of his game anymore.

Just to think, 6 to 7 years ago we were blasting him for dribbling too much, and lacking any meaningful end product. Now we're criticizing him for not dribbling at all.

I think he's cursed by the attributes he possesses. Sure you could keep him on the wing, and with time, he would remember how to get by players/fullbacks (he has the best off the ball movement I've ever seen), and maybe he'd get you 20 assists from there, and a few goals, and look much more exciting, like the 06/07 Ronaldo. But which Ronaldo benefits the team/coach more? The 20 assist/few goals/fullback destroying Ronaldo, or the 53 goals/few assists/dull machine like Ronaldo? Unfortunately for us, Sir Alex and Mourinho chose the latter.

I don't think he's miles behind Messi. How can someone who scored 53 goals last season (not all of them were poacher goals, but still) be "miles behind"?

He may not be far behind Messi in terms of his goalscoring and finishing abilities. Where he does lag far behind Messi is his ability to capture the imagination as well as Messi has for the past few seasons. Messi's evolution into an attacking footballer of rare precocity, brilliance and imagination is something that is far beyond his abilities as a goalscorer and finisher.

I don't know what precocity means :(

I agree that Messi is ahead of Ronaldo in those attributes, however it's not as if Ronaldo is a more clinical Huntelaar, he's shown he can be a creative player if played in that role, with United, and at flashes last season with Real. In a game against Valencia, he was back to his old self, beating players for fun, and I think he got 2 assists. Don't think he can do both roles at the same time, hence his manager having to choose what would benefit the team the most.

All in my opinion of course, and I think Messi is the better player, because he may be a bit worse than Ronaldo at goalscoring, but he has displayed he is much better at precocity and imagination

Bollocks! How exactly have they ruined him? Please do tell!

It's not like goals is what matters the most in football or anything and he just didn't score the most anybody has seen in how many years or nothing. Ruined!
