Messi is totally a goalscorer. It's just not his only metric.
What makes Messi so special, is that he is an elite goalscorer and playmaker, so yeh, he is also a goalscorer.
Messi isn't really setting the World on fire in the Mickey Mouse league. That being said he still has my vote as the more talented of the two.
He can go scoreless and be the best player on the pitch, as Maradona used to be. Scoring is a bonus.
Without goals he will be like Hazard. Best player on the pitch, maybe, but probably not enough to be best in the world, if he doesn’t have goals in his game.

I think that’s a bit of understatement on Maradona and over-simplification in players comparison, really. Sure they are of similar type of players with similar footballing, but Maradona has something more on being more explosive, playing with more flair/imagination, more leadership/influential, and being able to carry weaker teams in his own and performing in bigger stage, in a way that not even peak Messi could match. Whereas Messi is being more consistent/efficient, better finishing/execution, on top of being as talented. If you take away half of his goals, he would not be Maradona, but he will have similar dribbling and final balls as Maradona.

Without the goals he'd still have 150 assists more than Hazard so I think that comparison is off.
If it wasn't for Messi, Iniesta and Xavi would have picked up Ballon d'Or's (Modric also won it) and they are not goal scores, so I don't see why Messi wouldn't still be best player in the world.
Obviously without any goals at all it would be a bit daft, but 19-20 year old Messi was still brilliant and one of the most explosive players in the world. I'd say take away half his goals and he would still be one of the best ever, but hard to justify as the goat.
