You’re right. It’s worth noting however that Messi has 169 and Ronaldo has 95. This may be slightly off topic but also found out Messi is the all time top la Liga goal scorer, top la Liga hat tricks, top la Liga goals scored in a single season. Tops every statistic category other than goalkeeper stats and most appearances. Ridiculous

Not surprising since Messi played there all his career.
In the years they coincided Messi has better assist ratio and Ronaldo has better goal ratio.

In fact in all competitions in that Ronaldo era in Real he has a goal ratio of more than 1, which is insane. Messi is below 1 but still close.
And look at the Ozil number of assists when he was in Real. The better assist ratio in that era, better than any any Barça player (IIRC). He had a Ronaldo making his numbers that high.

I don't get how people can claim that one is better than the other after all they achieved in the last 10-15y. It's mindboggling.

I rate Ronaldo higher but in the end, it's more a matter of taste than anything else.
They both are the core reason why their teams achieved what they achieved, both broke a sh*t ton of records along the way and they are without any doubt 2 of the greatest players to ever play the game.

Depending on how you decide to measure (since it's not really a science) you can argue that Messi is a more natural footballer while Ronaldo is pretty much the apex athlete but if you a look at their careers, the end result it's pretty much the same (with a few exceptions).

In on end, you have Messi that is a threat anywhere in the attack since he is just as good creating goals as he is at scoring them but when he's having a bad game / being shut down his team is pretty much playing with 1 less player. He doesn't run, he doesn't try, and just accepts there's nothing he can do to change the outcome of the match.

On the other end, you have Ronaldo. Easily one of the best finishers this game ever seen, he always seems to know where the ball is going to drop inside the box, can shoot with the left foot from any range, can shoot with the right foot from any range, he's the best aerial player I ever saw and although his playmaker abilities are seriously underrated he is one level under Messi in that department.
The big difference for me is that Ronaldo having a bad game / being shut down still scores or still tries to win no matter what the odds are. That mentality alone alongside his talent for me is what makes me rate him higher.

I honestly don't care who is the "greatest", I love watching Messi play and I love watching Ronaldo but at the end of the day, Ronaldo is the player I would want in my team.

This, they are both equally amazing.
IMHO chosing one or other is perfectly fine and a subjective thing based on their strenghts, what I do not agree is saying the other is nowhere near. They are equally amazing.

Also since when are assists the measuring stick for passing ability? Doesn't Benzema have more assists than Xavi and Iniesta?

Even if they are, Messi still has him beat.

Then he has him beat in every other statistical category for passing. Key passes, progressive passes, passes into the box, etc.

Messi is levels above Ronaldo as a passer.

I think Messi is in the top top tier with Pele and Maradona.

Ronaldo is below that tier for me.

So I don't think Ronaldo is equal to Messi, but that's not really an insult to Ronaldo.

PS: For all stat lovers out there, to make a fair comparison between both you should use stats from the 9y that both played in the same league since Ronaldo for most of his Man Utd career was a pure winger.
Very good post. My personnal preference goes to Messi but if I have to think with my brain and build a team, I'd go for Ronaldo.

Or Ronaldo had an Ozil making his numbers that high?:wenger:
Also think it’s weird that the same people that say Messi was contributing goals and assists before Ronaldo joined Madrid and therefore la Liga records aren’t a fair comparison, also try to count out one of Messi’s UCL wins because apparently, he played no part

Quite surprised by the vote, especially on a United forum. Nonetheless I've chosen Messi.

On messivsronaldo.net

Messi wins by a huge margin in a poll with around 1 million voters. But its stilll just a poll.

He is the 3rd highest in assists in La Liga history despite playing further up the field. Perhaps if you opened your eyes and stopped with the agenda against him you would realize this. Like I said, he can do that more if he wanted to, but he is better being on the end of those passes than making them himself. This is pretty basic stuff and shouldn't be that hard to understand...

No one said Ronaldo isn't a creative player, he is a decent passer and a great crosser - what literally no one agrees with is you saying Ronaldo is as good at creating as Messi but chooses not to. Does it not tell you something that the three most frequent posters in this thread who support Ronaldo vociferously have all disagreed with you?

Also playing farther up the pitch makes it easier to get assists, not harder. Assists aren't exactly an accurate measure of creativity and passing ability, hence Benzema having more assists than Kroos and Modric.

At this point, you're on flat earth levels of delusion and yet you're here telling everyone who disagrees with you they have an anti-Ronaldo agenda, even though the most pro-Ronaldo posters on this forum have explicitly disagreed with you as well. Think about that for a moment.

I suggest you take a look at their heat maps throughout the years..

There is no need. Again its a pedantic point. We know Messi has played forward his entire career, yes Messi also likes to drop deep but he was never in the position Ronaldo was at the time when he first moved to United. He played something like 150 games before being moved to become an actual forward. Messi has always been up there and yes with the ability to drop back to collect the ball. But never isolated on the wing tasked with going up and down the line as an old school winger.

Exactly, but people who use the Ronaldo played as a RW in a 4-4-2 excuse willingly ignore their heat maps that will probably show that for most part of their careers, Ronaldo has played further up than Messi...

Yes but not for the first 150 games of his career. So if you take that period out then you can compare them both when it comes to output. Before that point it makes no sense because Ronaldo was doing a job which simply meant he wasn't in the positions was and was tasked with defending that messi hasnt had to.

Well, look at Ozil stats without Ronaldo. And look at Ronaldo stats without Ozil.
Of course Ozil had a lot of merit in those assists, even Ronaldo was pissed when Real sold him, but Ronaldo has shown before and after that Ozil wasn't the cause of his numbers.

I don't understand what you mean with the second sentence, I can't understand what you are trying to argue because it makes no sense to me.

Zabaleta I'll concede I suppose. Fonte for me is better than Garay or Demichelis by a not-insignificant margin. And Aguero didn't make it in over Higuain!

Aguero had an injury leading up to the final, as did Di Maria, hence why they didn’t start the match.

Ok, so ignoring his first 137 games at united and only including stats from 06/07 onwards. That year they got rid of Van nistelrooy and switched to a 4-3-3 with Ronaldo scoring a lot more. Ronaldo was 21 at the time so he was more developed. Including Messi's stats from 07/08 onwards when he was 20, Messi is still a better goal scorer.

I’d say even in 06/07 Ronaldo was more a pure winger than goalscoring winger. His first instinct was still to run down the wing and beat his man rather than coming inside and getting on the end of balls. He was the same player in 06/07 as he was for most of 05/06 but just significantly more effective (he was already arguably United’s best player by Feb-March 2006).

He only REALLY started developing the goalscoring instincts we know today from 07/08 and probably only from around November-December of that season.
Also, United still played 4-4-2 in 06/07 with Ronaldo either at LM or RM and with a combination of Rooney-Saha or Rooney-Larsson (later in the season) up-front.

I'm surprised that ratio is only 60-40 for Messi. Considering that this is football forum I was expecting that people here understand game and ratio will be more like 80-20 (or more) for Messi.

Stats without context proves nothing. Including ronaldo's years in Man Utd makes little sense since you have a better sample you can use (the 9y they played in the same league and therefore had the same adversaries)

By that time the Premier League was the top league in the world and had far better quality than La Liga (bar the usual suspects). Btw, I'm not saying that La Liga was crap, I'm just saying the Premier League was way more competitive across the border

It is also worth nothing that Messi has played 16 years in La Liga while Ronaldo played 10. So that makes it an average of 10.56 per year for Messi and 9.5 per year for Ronaldo. Not that much of a difference is there?

If you are doing it from the 07/08 these numbers are straight up wrong.

He has 583 goals from 629 games since then so 0.93

Messi has played 661 games and scored 608 so is actually a bit lower at 0.92.

So very close with Ronaldo being slightly better.

Adding internacional games aswell
0.61 Ronaldo
0.5 Messi

No I didn't

You said that Ronaldo is a better passer than Messi and that's pretty much the most absurd statement you can make in a football context you could possibly make. Messi's passing ability is light years, and I mean light years, ahead of Ronaldo's. Actually, the difference between Messi's dribbling ability and Ronaldo's dribbling ability is less extreme than between their passing abilities since CR7 used to be an incredible dribbler. I'd say Messi's final balls are only rivaled by Özil and de Bruyne in this generation while Ronaldo's aren't even in the top 20.

I can fully understand why some people prefer Cristiano, especially under certain circumstances, although I don't agree. But claiming he's a better or even an equally good passer is.. well, it's simply not true. If you seriously think that and don't just stick with it because you're too proud to admit it was a silly statement you didn't think through, one has to seriously doubt your knowledge of the sport.

it used to be Pele vs Maradona for years and years, now it is Ronaldo vs Messi, and some time in the future it will be x vs y (Haaland vs Mbappe??)

you got to love football and the source for endless entertainment and debates :)

What's for certain is that there are two camps with people stuck in fortified trenches fighting a desperate war, or so it feels at times.

Come on, all. Let's just accept the fact that there is no common objective way to define "THE BEST".
  1. Are we going to use how many goals scored?
  2. The goal scoring ratio?
  3. Assists?
  4. Key passes?
  5. Technical ability?
  6. Dribbling?
  7. Ability to use both feet and heading?
  8. Pace?
  9. Mobility?
  10. Physique?
  11. Trophies?
  12. Doing it in different leagues?
  13. Carrying a team?
  14. National team results?
  15. Persona?
  16. Effectiveness?
  17. Popularity?
In these debates we pick and choose the criteria that best suit our agenda
In these debates we pick and choose criteria that favours offensive players
In these debates we pick and choose criteria that at times are very context and third-variable dependent

Let's enjoy discussing till the end of the world, but at the same time recognise that in the end, this is all oh so subjective.

(Personally, Maradona is surely GOAT)

Sure you could argue that way. By using same logic on goal ratio, one could also argue Ronaldo is better goalscorer than Messi in La Liga too.

La Liga stats:
Ronaldo: 311 goals in 292 games (1.065)
Messi: 444 goals in 485 games (0.915)

It was 50-50 until the poll was tampered with.

The title really should be changed to indicate that the poll isn't reliable anymore, so people stop using it as a reference.

I included data from 07/08 for Messi and from 06/07 for Ronaldo. Age is an important factor, 07/08 Ronaldo was 22 and in his best form at Man utd whilst Messi was 20 and still developing.

I included international games in my original post but because what position the player plays is an important issue, I decided to remove it. For Argentina Messi plays as a CAM or a midfielder in a deeper position compared to Ronaldo who is usually the most advanced player for Portugal. If you don't think Ronaldos early games when he was playing as a winger shouldn't be included, I don't see how it can justified to include his international career.

La Liga stats:
Ronaldo: 311 goals in 292 games (1.065)
Messi: 444 goals in 485 games (0.915)

Messi's ratio is dragged down by his numbers when he was 17-20 and still developing. Ronaldo's numbers are from when he was at his peak (24-33).

Comparing Messi's and Ronaldo's la Liga stats when they were both here (2009-2018) their goal ratio is equal:

Messi: 329 goals in 309 games (1.065)
Ronaldo: 311 goals in 292 games (1.065)

That's remarkable actually.

Great stat. Couple this up with Messi being better at passing and dribbling and Ronaldo winning in heading, crossing and general leadership, they are equal. End of discussion.

We are truly lucky to have witnessed these two play in the same generation, and I so wish Messi joins Juve next summer for these two to win the CL together at ages where most other top players would be in China, USA, the lower leagues or retired.

The only thing that Messi is better at is dribbling and he has a better left foot...

Yeah I mean this is just nonsense and reeking of blind ignorance.

Not even the biggest Ronaldo fans @SportingCP96 and @Peyroteo would agree with you.

Messi destroys Ronaldo in every passing metric out there, but it's quite simple from watching them who the better passer is.

Are you saying Ronaldo is up there with the very best players in final 3rd passes in football history? Because Messi himself is up there with Laudrup, Maradona, etc. If so, you need to go watch a different sport. At least show some level of objectivity when comparing the two.

It'd be like me proclaiming Messi's as good aerially as Ronaldo, but he chooses not to leap as much as him, since he's so good on the ball.

Messi is way better at free-kicks too, but you left that out conveniently.

De Bruyne just called Messi the best player of all time. Feels like so many more modern players/coaches say that about Messi far more than Ronaldo in fairness

Ronaldo is 3rd all time assist leader in La Liga history despite only playing 10 years there. To put that into perspective, Messi has averaged around 10.5 assists per season in La Liga and is thought of as the most creative player ever, while Ronaldo has averaged around 9.5 assists per year and isn't thought of as being creative at all. Makes one who doesn't have an agenda think that perhaps this part of CR7's game is being over looked...

The Ronaldo Messi debate or preference comes down to something deeper in our mental conditioning and preference.

Ronaldo has a lot of natural talent, but to play at the level and consistency he does takes a lot of mental resolve and training. The physicalilty, tearing apart 3 different leagues, takes a lot of fortitude. Messi's talent is beyond all human comprehension. The peak Messi years 2009-2011, I don't think any footballer can play the game as good as he did.

So what drives the preference? Atleast for neutral supporters. I think partially, it's do with one projecting their own view and definition of "success" on the players. Some value talent, some value the hustle. I like the hustle to be honest and thus I prefer Ronaldo. But I know a lot of people who would probably kill for Messi.

There should be a research paper on this. Does the preference/bias extend to other aspects of life or is this is a one off?

I know that you love the stat that Ronaldo is the 3rd highest assist leader in La Liga, but let me put it in perspective for you. Between MSN and BBC, Ronaldo actually has the 2nd lowest assist ratio in La Liga with only Bale having a worse record.

Messi - 194 minutes per assist
Neymar - 200 mins per assist
Suarez - 215 mins per assist
Benzema - 257 mins per assist
Ronaldo - 261 mins per assist
Bale - 271 mins per assist

Source: transfer markt

So as you can see, Ronaldo's assist record in La Liga isn't particularly remarkable for an elite attacker. Benzema and Suarez aren't traditional playmakers either but they have better assist records than Ronaldo. Wonder if the penny will drop that your opinion of Ronaldo being as good at passing as Messi is completely stupid now the one stat which you've been holding onto for dear life has been given a bit of context.

Ronaldo's had the better career if you ask me. Messi's a better player though.

Has he though?

In terms of individual accolades collected during their careers, Messi has been miles ahead and it's not even a debate. This includes accolades Ronaldo won in England and Italy.

I think winning stuff in different countries is more exciting, so in my opinion his career is better.

Seeing the game Liverpool vs Leeds yesterday let me just feel that Messi hasn't played in a league this pungent.

So much talent top to bottom. So much money, managers, near world class to top class players players playing at these clubs - his stats would definitely go down a level playing here.

I'd love to see him here playing in a different team, under different tactics consistently against different breed of players. Please just move here and play against Leeds instead of getafe.
