It'll be a sad day when he retires, for the game, and Barca imo will never get over losing him. They'll still be able to attract the best players but they won't have him to go into unplayable mode in such crucial games.

You are insane. Messi is so far ahead of Ronaldo it's not even up for discussion anymore.
Tonight is a good game for me to describe why I will always prefer Messi, besides the goals, you can feel his impact and importance. Their entire attacking and a big part of their possession depends on him.
I never understood using the Euro Cup as a stick to beat Messi with. Ronaldo barely featured, his team won it without him. Whereas we've seen how good Argentina can be when Messi is out of the team. They were struggling to even qualify for international tournaments and weren't going to do so before he came out of retirement, with him going basically god mode to even get them to qualify.

The final. If we are going to take the final game out of the equation, then your argument against Messi doesn't hold up, considering most of his international failures have been in the final games. Germany, Chile etc. You can't pick and choose when to use your arguments.

Argentina wouldn't be qualifying for these tournaments without Messi and Portugal won it without him. It's essentially the same. Both players were influential in getting their teams to the finals, neither could be the difference in said final to get their nations over the line.

I agree, ridiculous to compare international performances. So many variables. If you’re going to bring into play though, there’s far more to a functional side than great players - Argentina are frankly wank without Messi, regardless of their quality
Obviously Portugal is also not nearly as good without Ronaldo, but neither of those players were the deciding factors in winning a final for their nations.
