This is where the understatement lies among this type of debate. Yes I think Messi is technically a better player, and easily the best player in La Liga this season too. But then you also have to give credits due to the other side too. Ronaldo didn’t singlehandedly win “every” CL game for Real, but he’s still top scorer of tournament (15 goals), and scored in 10 games out of 13 this season. This is as good as anyone could have achieve in CL history, if you keep an open mind to this.

Also, do you realize Ronaldo had up to date 208 assists throughout his career? That’s not as far behind to Messi career stats as you think (250 assists for Messi).

Ronaldo has 150 more appearances.

I hope I can use my ITK skills with Kevin Roldan to meet Ronaldo some day when the stars are aligned. Just sad he didn't invite me to shoot at the infamous party. Might have something to do with me two years earlier getting wasted and losing phone and wallet in Cali the night before I was supposed to do his photo shoot.

I never suggest they are at same level in terms of creating goals. But statement like “ronaldo does nothing except scoring poacher goals” are totally untrue.

Messi would no doubt be better than he's looked if he was in the Portugal side.
I also think Ronaldo would be better than Messi in the Argentina side though, mainly because of his drive.

Rojo mentioned that Messi gave an inspirational talk between two halves of the match, and suggested to other players to shoot whenever they have a chance to do so, regardless of the position. Apparently, that was why Rojo shot in that way, despite not being quote good at shooting.

So, I think fair is fair. If we gave credit to Ronaldo for pushing Moutinho to shoot the penalty in Euros, or him motivating his teammates against France, Messi should get similar credit here.

But Messi has thrown a kettle over a....

I'll stop now, although this is just as interesting as the actual Messi v Ronaldo debate.
It absolutely is, so I’ll carry it on by mentioning the other fella in the title - Rojo. He once shotput a fridge the length of a swimming pool

Messi proved last night why he's the best player in the world.

These type of arguments are so dull.

Unless you scores 4 solo goals in a 4-3 thriller against top opposition opposition in a knockout game where the world is watching, there is never going to be one game that proves a question like this.

I was being sarcastic, like 90% of the other posts on this forum. Sorry, thought it was obvious.

Yeah, I'm gonna take truths from some guy who says Carrick and Fletcher sucked

Amazing that people sit in front of that video and can think "wow, that's some good argument, now it's settled!" This guy is making such dumb and superficial arguments it is unreal. And then he acts like he's just said something very clever, insightful, added a new facette to the debate and is completely full of himself  You hear in every sentence that he knows nothing at all about football. No clue but an opinion. Cringeworthy stuff.

Argentina have a snowball in hell's chance of winning this tournament...Argentina must win their group, otherwise they will run into France and almost certainly lose.

Well, I completely overrated this Argentina team! They are utterly inept. I hadn't watched any of their qualifying games for the World Cup, but I can see why they struggled to qualify and were 1-0 down to Ecuador now.

If Messi played in this team every week, he would have won nothing. As would any other player in football history. Their performance this evening was about the level of a mid-table team in the English second tier. At best.

The best thing for Messi would be if they don't win their final group game, and don't scrape through to the next round, as he can go home, rest and prepare himself for next season. His participation in this tournament is completely pointless.
I rest my case. Messi played really well. You cannot give away goals like that and hope to compete at the highest level.

No goal on KO stage of World Cup. On his career.

Messi is not the greatest player of all time.

This whole GOAT obsession is stupid beyond belief.
The worst thing about the obsession is it leads people to downplay the talent of one or the other, or even take pleasure in seeing one of them fail. It's all quite pathetic.

Messi and Ronaldo are two of the best players the sport has ever seen. We should enjoy them both before they retire, instead of picking one as a favourite and then behaving like some creepy deranged lovesick teenager.

Exactly.

massively fecked up by assisting 2 goals in a 3 - 4 loss :lol: anyone who has that opinion should stopped watching football forever

'14 was his chance where the defense was solid and he didn't do much in the KO round but not this time

Great cross at the end though to be fair to him. Just needed to be involved more. Was way too anonymous for parts of the game.

I thought Messi did pretty well today given how little he had of the ball. Real shame he couldn't keep his balance on that missed shot, would have been an all time goal imo. Fantastic assist at the end too.
