It is not just about a good finish, it requires a good start. Hence why Barcelona have ran away with the league. They started great, Real did not.

Also implying Messi is only good because of the ‘system’ is flawed on so many levels.

Barcelona were great under Pep, take Messi out and they don’t win 2 CL finals against United.

When Barca had Enrique, Messi was the best player in a completely different system and they won the treble.

Ronaldo played in the 2008 United side that was the best team in te league with or without him, he played in a great set up just like Messi.

Argentina may not have won any tournaments but Messi was the main reason they got to so many finals. In a totally different system with different players.

Just like Ronaldo got to the final with Portugal. Yes Portugal won it but Ronaldo didn’t feature.

Messi and Ron both got to finals with different teams and systems for their country, and won countless honours for their clubs in different systems with different players.

Your point was pointless.

They are both extraordinary players that would look great in any team. But for me Messi is better. It is not a discredit to Ronaldo, and I do not think there is a massive difference between them. They have different qualities, but I prefer Messi.
Crazy delusion.

United won the league by 2 points in 07-08, with Ronaldo scoring 31 goals, yet, United would have won with or without him?

Barcelona won 2 CL finals where they'd have won without Messi's goals, yet he's the key?

Funny how you changed it all, I said three 0-0s, not erasing every Messi goal and leave it at that, the point was that they were never in danger of not advancing... at the end of the day Argentine weren't playing with 10 men, you put someone else in his place (which would drastically change the way they play + no free pass in defending like Messi) and that guy or someone else would score at least once in 3 matches, they're not short of top forwards anyway, and they'd be through, hell, even add another DM and they'd be through.

I don't need to speculate about what happens when Messi doesn't play with Argentina, we have footage and data of what happened in the 18'WC qualifier when that team lacks Leo.

You might try all the mental gymnastics you want, Argentina plainly sucks without Messi, is not something to argue about, it's a fact at this point of his career.

That's because the whole team is set up to play for Messi, so whenever he isn't around, the players run around like headless chicken and don't know what to do.q

Easy to see why Messi is better? Because he dribbles more or is less selfish?

Watch their games, please.

You can watch for example, their last games vs Juventus. Or their last games vs PSG (despite PSG this year was much stronger than last year). Or also their last games vs Bayern. Or vs At,etico in the UCL...

Now, I'm pretty sure that Messi wasn't better than Rinaldo vs any of that teams. And that teams are the ones that they have played in the important games last seasons.

Ronaldo destroyed all of them, Messi disappeared in all lf them.
So no argument?
And what makes Ronaldo better then? Just because he scored against these teams? Just because HIS team won, he is automatically individually better? Come on.
Just rewatch la liga again and its easy to see.
You can compare United Ronaldo vs Messi but not the Ronaldo from Real the last years. Ronaldo has a position/job in which he cant really show his talent and i dont blame him. Messi has to create, dribble, score. Ronaldo has to be in the right position when a cross comes in. Maybe he is as good as Messi if you asked him to do the same what messi does but since you cant argue on a theoretical basis, you have to base it on what you see and there is Messi ahead. The same reason why many footballers(not celebs or Media) agree on Messi being the best.

Jesus, neverendending excuses.

Like Argentina don't have one of the closest players to Messi's profile in Dybala, and it still didn't work, the arguments here are like the old "How can England suck with Lampard, Gerrard, Carrick, Beckham, Hargreaves and Cole?", well, sometimes teams suck disregarding the quality of their pieces.

Basically I'm saying Messi's presence and the manager wanting everything set up just for him is causing resentment in other Argies and that's why they're playing so badly.

Maybe because he scored 5 vs Bayern, 5 vs Juve, 3 vs PSG, etc, only in the last year? And that his goals took his team to win the UCL.

You really think that he wasn't better than Messi that literally disappeared vs all that teams the last years and because of that, Barca couldn't get past quarterfinals after that games.

Also, you demonstrate you know nothing about Madrid and that you never see their games, maybe 2 or 3 a year, when you say Ronaldo is all the time in the box waiting for crosses.

Please watch tomorrow the game, then we talk.

So i still see no argument what makes Ronaldo better...beside goals and individual games where Ronaldo scored more than Messi.

Nobody is denying that Ronaldo had better games in UCL than Messi but that does not automatically make him the better player

But oh right yea. Thats why he has more successfull dribblings, more assists, more crucial passes, more etc. than Messi. Oh wait. He does not

If the entire argument that Ronaldo is better is based on goals - then yea - we can close this because its pointless then to argue.
It seems nobody is considering any other attributes than scoring.

It’s hilarious that these type of infographics with dribbling somehow being as important as goals or assists are popping up more and more in recent years where Ronaldo is destroying the best oppositions in the CL and Messi tends to watch the SF from home.

Zidane is considered one of the all time greats and he scored feck all. Goals aren't everything.

it's funny that the Ronaldo fans don't mention that 3 of his goals against Bayern were offside :D

You completely missed his point, like he said, goals alone do not make the better player. Matches are won by goals yes but the best goal scorer is not always the best player.

People who are pro Ronaldo seem to only use the argument of ‘Ronaldo has scored more CL goals and has been better in the last 3 seasons of the CL’ which does not mean he is the better player over their careers.

It is also important to know that Messi in his best year performance wise, tops Ronaldo’s best season by a landslide.

Beyond the last 2-3 years seems to get forgotten by people.

Yes goals are important, but so are assists, key passes, successful dribbles, successful passes etc.

Otherwise Xavi, Zidane etc, to name a few would not be regarded as good as they are. RVN, Owen, Hernandez etc would be seen as better than both Xavi and Zidane if goals were the only important thing. Klose is the top scorer in WC history, does that also mean he is the best International player of all time? Of course not.

This poll will be 50/50 by tomorrow

Tbf this is a United forum where Ronaldo won plenty of trophies and is seen as a legend of the club by most.

See the website Messi vs Ronaldo, the split is 61:39 in Messi’s favour. That gives a closer comparison of opinions with 493k of votes.

And that is why Ronaldo is there with Muller as one of the best goalscorers ever.

About that whole ‘Cristiano doesn’t cover distance and he just waits inside box’ narrative ... but I thought Messi starts as a centre back and plays all the way to forward covering so much distance on the field

I’m telling ya those Messi/Barca homers will try and spin anything to make em feel better. Loved when that visual of alltime CL assists leaders was posted with Ronnie sitting comfortably at #1; this should resinate similarly disproving another common misconception.

I think it's obvious Ronaldo's movement is better than Messi's.

Messi has gotten a bit lazy with his movement lately, especially in big games.

The entire point is that dribbles and passes matter squat unless they lead to goals.

I think it's obvious Ronaldo's movement is better than Messi's.

Messi has gotten a bit lazy with his movement lately, especially in big games.

He’s always been “economical” with his movement, he used to be lauded for it because he’d bimble around for a few minutes and then explode into life and take it past a few players or find a bit of space and play a pass that takes a whole defence out of the game.

Over the last year or two though that intensity has become fewer and farther between. He’s got a hell of a lot of other strings to his bow so it’s not like he’s suddenly fallen off a cliff but it’s noticable in the bigger games when Ronaldo is grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck while Messi’s shrinking.

Ronaldo’s goal got called back, rightfully so although it could’ve gone either way that’s how close it was in real time being just below his shoulder.

I guess you can say he pulled a Messi tonight ;)

I don’t get where this silly notion came from that Barca have some MLS quality side incapable of winning anything when they’re still a top5 club in the world and 10+ points clear in La Liga.

Wasn’t all the talk at the beginning of the year when Madrid were starting slow that they’re going to walk La Liga and go further than Madrid in the CL and how they’ve turned it around and back to being ahead of RM and Ronaldo’s done? They also have a better goals against + goals for and from what I recall, Barca fans were saying they had the better starters having heard them say,

Messi > Ronaldo
Suarez > Benzema
Coutinho > Isco
Ter Stegan > Navas
Busquets > Casemiro
Umtiti > Varane
Pique > Ramos
Dembele > Bale
Alba > Marcelo.

Odd how that’s changed isn’t it since Messi no-showed and it somehow became an instant excuse for him/them. I don’t recall any of this to begin the year with, the whole Ronaldo has an infinitely better team than Messi does...funny how that works...
Messi goes missing like this and Barca lose 3-0

Messi has the higher goal scoring support cast as well but keep telling yourself that :wenger:

Imagine bumping this thread

The obsession with Messi is worryingly sad now. The whole week this lot have been telling us about how Ronaldo puts in amazing, Godlike performances every CL game - he then goes on to serve up a stinker.

Was due a bad game, can't hold it against him after so many good games.

Made another shameful dive again, thought he cut it out of his game.

Messi has NEVER been so uninvolved and poor in a game in his career.

Why is this place crawling with desperate Ronaldo fanboys squirming as they attempt to diminish anything Messi does?

Some of the posts above mine:lol:

I love the guy as much as the next guy but as the poster above me said, this obsession his fanboys seem to have with Messi is alarmingly unhealthy.

If only referees weren't scared to book him for it. They don't do it because they know he'll probably score later on and whip his top off and there's no way they want to be the ref who sent off Ronaldo.

“Stinker” :lol::lol:

The game was so casual and meh. Ronaldo didn’t feck up anything. In fact the one chance he had he put the ball in the net but it got called back. Still the 2nd leg to go.

...people won’t acknowledge Ronaldo holding back when he thought to bicycle kick it. Caused the entire Bayern defense to stop moving. Ball double bounced (goes to show how flat footed it left them concentrating so much on CR7’s movement/anticipation) and Marcelo struck it in goal.

^no one will mention that though. But if it was Messi who attracted the defense and left another wide open to score, they’d be drooling all over it.

THey'll say it's cause Messi fanboys ran riot here before so they're like returning the favor or whatever.

You haven't watched the CL in spring in the last few years?

Watched every one of his UCL games the last 5 years and most of us who aren't Ronaldo fanboys recognize that Messi has never had a match this poor. He might not score, but he's always involved. A lot more than your idol was tonight.

Now, keep the bitterness at home and take the loss.
