@Red: using that nowhere is Cristiano greater than Messi. which is the reason we are having this debate.

The way I see it, it’s not only about goals, it’s more about their overall impact on winning matches, big matches and trophies. I’ve always maintain Messi being the better player, but Ronaldo is probably greater.

Since Ronaldo has been in Madrid, Barcelona have scored 6 more goals than Madrid in the league with 1 more game played. It's been pretty much the same.
On a goals per game basis we outscored them in 5 of 8 seasons, but yeah it's been very fine margins.

If Messi sat out the game due to injury and Argentina somehow manged to win it, a big chunk of people (I wouldn't ofc) would rate him higher than they do now.

Insane isn't it?
You mean Messi didn't sit out that game?

He's surely gonna win the Balon D'Or this year and overtake Ronaldo on that front. It's hard to see Ronaldo winning another one, of they finish their careers 6-4 it'll count for something.

Plus I think it will always be common knowledge that the general consensus among people who saw both play was that Messi was better.

I doubt Messi will win Ballon d'or this year.

He won't win the CL or World Cup, plus is already starting to look tired in recent weeks

Ronaldo will win CL and win ballon d'or again

I never understood why these threads exist. Messi was individually always the better player. Anyone that watch a lot of football should really have realized this by now.

 Ronaldo fanboys say it’s all about the goals but when confronted with facts that show Messi is just as good a goal scorer and more efficient “it’s not just about goals, it’s about impact on games “.

Except Messi was actually very good in that game bar his miss, yet obviously everyone forgets that...had Hummels shaking first half in particular
No, he had hummels on skates once in the first half, and then he had that chance in the second, and the rest of the time he barely even touched the ball

Since he's been in Madrid he's scored 1.02 goals per game compared to Messi's 0.99. In the Champions League knockouts, he's scored 1 goal per game, Messi's scored 0.72 goals per game. In La Liga he scores 1.05 goals per game to Messi's 1.06.

It's a very small margin and stats can be deceiving but I don't know what the problem is in saying Ronaldo's the better goalscorer of the two. I still think goals per game or minutes per goal is the best way to look at it.
Why ignore Ronaldo at United?

If you really wanted to be unbiased and fair post the stats over their whole career, or post Messi stats from when Ronaldo went to Madrid .

The word fanboy needs to carry a temp ban with it. No one can take anyone seriously when they refer to the other as a fanboy.

Because the original point was that Messi won the CL as many times as Ronaldo as if they did just as much each time.

The fact of the matter is Messi was just lucky to be in a great squad for that first one.

As for La Liga, better team mates explain it.
So Messi is ahead in La Liga because of better team mates and Ronaldo ahead in CL because of himself.:)

Last year Barcelona conceded 7 goals against PSG and Juventus, I can't say the same about Real Madrid.

Just curious as I think your opinion aligns with mine (apart from the fact I enjoy watching Ronaldo slightly more and he edges it for me) but if Ronaldo won the world cup with Portugal would it change your opinion on who is the GOAT?

Possible! Winning it with Portugal would be an incredible feat but it’s so unlikely.

Not in the context you meant.

Is Real inferior to Barcelona in last 10 years. Yes.
Does that make Cristiano face more difficulties in scoring goals compared to Messi with Barcelona? No.

They are misleading when you try to use them to mislead. They are not misleading when used in correct correlation.

For example wrong correlation: Higuain is a superior goals scorer to Cristiano in at his best, because he had a shot per goal ratio of 2.84 during his best season in Real Madrid(He scored 25 goals from just 71 shots in 2011/12), while Cristiano's best is 5.10 shots per goal during the 2014/15 season(when he scored 58 goals from 296 shots). That is just plain stupid conclusion because Higuain was never trusted as much as Cristiano during his tenure in Real Madrid, and when he was at Napoli, given full control, he was inferior to Cristiano in terms of goals and while not being as godly in shots per goal as in that 2011/12 season.

So proved that when Higuain was given the same role(the main man of the team) as Cristiano he was not as good.

That is example of using statistics to mislead, using a minor piece to tell the whole picture, while in whole picture, Pipita is not in the same level as Ronnie.

Now the example of a correct correlation: Messi and Cristiano has similar freedom and roles in their respective teams. They can take shots from anywhere they want, they have teammates always trying to find them and so on. Their statistical comparison makes sense, since they are given are both the main goal scorers for the team.

And here below is how they have performed with their respective clubs for Champions League and La Liga(since stats for Copa del rey are not available) since Cristiano moved to Madrid:

The above stats, just shows that there is not much to be said to come to the conclusion that Cristiano is a greater goal scorer than Messi.
You're talking like all shots are equal to each other. The fact is that given their playing styles, Ronaldo is more likely to attempt a shot from a more difficult position (resulting in lower conversion rates), whilst Messi is more likely to try to dribble himself into a better position before shooting (resulting in a higher conversion rate due to better positions).

However, that does NOT mean the Messi way is better, because he's just as likely to have lost the ball trying to dribble as Ronaldo was to have taken a shot from a lesser favorable position.

Given Ronaldo's better overall goals record during the same seasons in La Liga, it's indisputable that he is the better goalscorer.

 Ronaldo fanboys say it’s all about the goals but when confronted with facts that show Messi is just as good a goal scorer and more efficient “it’s not just about goals, it’s about impact on games “.
It's about influencing the players actually playing the game from the sidelines using magic mind powers.

I never understood why these threads exist. Messi was individually always the better player. Anyone that watch a lot of football should really have realized this by now.

"It is said that in academia the arguments are so fierce because the issues are so trivial; it is the same in football." - (Carlo Ancelotti, Quiet Leadership)

Some people just like to argue (discuss, call it what you wish) the trivial, the pointless and the obvious (in bold).

I like Ronnie (back to back UCL and first to 100 UCL goals for the same team). I can't stand Barcelona and Messi (with his fake a$$ humility) but he is definitely the better player.

Messi’s SECOND best record for goals in a calendar year is still 10 ahead of Ronaldo’s best ever. And he only played 1 more game to achieve it. What’s indisputable is that Messi’s peak goalscoring prowess exceeds Ronaldo’s. There’s absolutely no other way to spin that

Why only La Liga though? Let's stop being selective , Over the course of their careers in all competitions it's pretty equal.

Ronaldo has declined significantly but just plays as a pure finisher so has better stats than before

There is no way he is a better player now or in the last 2 years than he was 5 years ago

His whole game has regressed yet he's now winning more awards than ever

Great goalscorer but to say he is better than Messi is a debate that should not even be debated

Messi plays 30 yards deeper than Ronaldo and puts out similar numbers while controlling the game from midfield

Of course it should be debated, it's one of the greatest sporting rivalries of all time and probably footballs greatest ever between 2 individuals, both on 5 Ballon d'Or's both score the same amount of goals per season, both have different world class qualities to their game.

As for Ronaldo declining, of course there's a decline but he's 33, there should be a decline. The guy is still voted as the current best player in the world though so tells me just how good he was in his prime if he's still winning awards saying 'the best in the world' during his decline.

There's no player (or even sportsman that I've heard of) can compare to Ronaldo's mentality in the game. Ronaldo raise his game when the whole stadium boo him. And when god-gifted Messi is easily leading Ballon D'or 4-1, the less talent Ronaldo makes it 5-5. He also won almost every trophies out there, scoring in all those big matches and cup final when the whole world think he is done (and 2 back to back Ballon D'or too)

This thread should be in the entertainment forum.

How about the fact that what you just said is not true? ;)

Messi's second best record for goals in a calendar year was 60 goals, Ronaldo scored more than that 4 different times.
:lol::lol:

I completely misread the data on that messivronaldo site, quoting his 79 club goals in the same year he got 91 total.

humble apologies for talking shite

Natural ability doesn't matter, how good of a football player someone is matters. Obviously natural ability will play a huge part in that, but it's not everything and it should never be the only atribute players get judged on.

What a stupid comment. Of course it matters ffs!

How many 33 year old's in the history of the game that play in Ronaldo's position have been as influential as he as. Nearing the end of his career yet he remains the most important player in one of the world's biggest clubs. The likes of Ronaldinho, R9 (tbf had major injuries); Schevchenko, Raul, Kaka, Henry, etc wouldn't polish Ronaldo's shoes when they were 33 too. Most didn't even play at the highest level when they reached his age let alone be an integral part of one of the world's premier clubs.

Did you just twist the words I’ve said to fit your own agenda? Don’t do that, behave :nono:

He was alright. A few poor games and a few good ones. No chance anyone would look at that Ronaldo and say he was truly special because he didnt have a special tournament and not even a very good one.

Feel free to stand by your view as I will mine. Ronaldo was okay/good-ish in that tournament. It was more a team effort/plucky win/low standard tournament than anything.

We truly do disagree then. I think he had a very good tournament (while Pepe was better than him). They simply wouldn't have won if it weren't for those two players.

 Please don't make up facts, one quick look on google and you know it's a lie.

It surely did. Pissed so many of them off 2 years later we’re still talking about it.
Not at all. It just convinced them of a narrative that was pretty delusional. Doubt people who believe Ronaldo played a major role in that final are pissed off at the result.

We truly do disagree then. I think he had a very good tournament (while Pepe was better than him). They simply wouldn't have won if it weren't for those two players.
They wouldn't have won without many players. Like the ones who created great chances for Ronaldo to miss in the first few games. Was a team effort with noone playing particularly superbly apart from the defence in a poor tournament.

I just want to point out that Messi did not even feature from the QF onwards for the CL 2006.

Yeah, but he broke the game against Chelsea in our favour. You might not remember this for biased reasons, but Chelsea were kind of a black beast for us in that era, if it was Ronaldo playing 300 minutes for Real Madrid, dancing circles around Bayern Munich in Round of 16 until someone injured him for the rest of the season you'd probably say that despite not playing much, he was a key part of that UCL run.
