Messi retires from Argentina.

What an overreaction. It's just two years before the next World Cup and considering they just managed three finals in a row while finally playing well, giving up on your national team at 29 is a huge letdown. It will inevitably tarnish his legacy as Argentina expected great things which he did not deliver with this generation, it will always be rised in GOAT conversations and rightly so.

What a wimp.

True winners overcome defeats and look forward to come back even stronger for the next challenge. Not call quits after a few defeats in a row.

 what have you conquered?

There are great players that continue to play with crapy team because that is their country and they try and try until they can play no more. He has the ability, he has the team, yet he's quitting early because they are not giving him trophies like Barcelona. Shameful.

He gave them his best 12 years. Just didn't work out.

Ah bloody hell, feck you little cnut, couldn't you have waited a bloody month with that decision? Now Ronaldo will be extra-motivated to win the Euros ffs.

No way. Hopefully just emotions after a despairing loss.

Couple has said he had issues with AFA and hence retiring in anger.
What's the issue?

With my Barcelona hat on, this is great news. I think he should have hung around for the next World Cup though.

The generation you mention let him down.

Maradona was the manager in 2010 ffs. Martin Palermo was taken to the World Cup. That alone tells you all you need to know about the AFA and their wisdom. Their selection process is always crazy.

For all this is a great generation of Argentines... they had Funes Mori, Rojo, Biglia etc playing. They're all garbage.

Clearly they're being crushed under the weight of expectation. Those are three extremely talented players, leaders in this team, who have lost three consecutive international finals in three years. The more I think about this, the more I think this kind of fallout was kind of inevitable. It's still very sad to see though.
Can't see them losing three consecutive finals being a reason with all three still having years of football ahead of them. Definitely feelslike a power play of some sort. I mean playing for your country is the highest honour that most want to continue doing for as long as possible so calling it quits does seem like a cop out, or a power play. It will definitely tarnish his status to some, I would think.

Never really looked forward to watching him play for Argentina, continuing pleasure to watch him play for Barcelona.

Same here.

Playing with genuinely great players like Iniesta, Xavi, Suarez, Neymar et al and then going and playing with pretenders like Higuain, Lamela, Biglia, Lavezzi... it shows.

Doesn't matter how motivated he is, Portugal are winning sweet feck all.

Nearly every great national side had a few below par players, it's just how it works

Funes Mori was great

He missed a penalty tonight. Chile was down to 10men for 60mins.

It's just they're done with this loosing thing.

The problem is not them. It's our FA.
Any chance that they're just trying to put pressure on the AFA and try to force changes? And that they actually have in mind to come back in time for the next World Cup? Could be tricky of course depending how the qualification goes without them.

All international teams have some average players. If Germany did not make it at the last World Cup would they be saying it's because they had Höwedes?

Have they declared a national day of mourning in Argentina?

It's disappointing news for the next World Cup but the man deserves to call time on it at his own leisure.

Sorry if I didn't express myself well. I meant Spain gave him everything. Argentina has done nothing for him.

PS: Mascherano retires from Argentina aswell

By your logic, you could say the same about George Best or Ryan Giggs and a host of other players.

Its sad. He's unique in the world and the world denied the few opportunities to see such a talent will be a loss.

This souds like 2002

Ronaldo comes back just for the world cup and they win it

You are forgetting to factor in extra time.
? Both teams were down to 10 men in second half and those extra time. It's not like Argentina 11 vs Chile 10 for 60 minutes.

He will start for Argentina in the 2018 World Cup, no question.

Messi is a great player, probably the best ever. Whatever happens with Argentina isn't going to change that. To win trophies you also need some luck. There are a lot of great players that never won anything with their national teams.

Not hard to figure out: his best player buddies also retiring, AFA shenanigans, media and public pressure, no hope of winning WC in Russia, legs coming under first intimations of aging stress -I don't understand why he is getting brickbats. He's a genius but he isn't a miracle worker like Farage.

No but that's not what I'm getting at.

If Germany never won the last world cup would people then say "nah, Neuer was a great keeper but I wouldn't put him in the GOAT discussion. He never done it with Germany!". I'd doubt it.

Club football is the pinnacle now and Messi has shone like no other. Whether he won with Argentina or not it shouldn't change the fact that he's a phenomenal player, and, IMO, the greatest ever.

You know the international football argument is silly when you can point out guys like Luca Toni and Kleberson are World Cup winners and Messi, Ronaldo, Cruyff, Maldini, Platini, Best, Di Stefano, Eusebio and Puskas aren't. And in the case of Messi and Ronaldo, they've been unbelievably great in the toughest club era ever. That counts for more, IMO, than beating the likes of Venezuela and Ecuador or Iceland and Albania.

Basically I think the obsession with international success is based upon romanticism rather than logic.

He's also waking up mid-night in cold sweat as in his nightmares he sees Kevin Großkreutz holding his WC medal.
