MERGED - The 2010/2011 ASHES tour thread...all Ashes related chat here please!

Haven't read through all the recent posts, but just wondering whether there's a consensus on when England should be looking to declare, if we're not bowled out prior to making the choice?

I was having this discussion with my brother, who thought we should just look to scoring quickly up to lunch before declaring. Personally, I think that's leaving the door just fractionally ajar, as the Aussies could conceivably score around 550 and give England an uncomfortable fourth innings. For me, England need to completly close out any possibility of the Aussies winning the game, by amassing a lead of about 600, which will take us to tea-time, at least.

What say you fellas?

Declare 1 over after lunch. Lead is 346, get around 100 more by lunch and that should be more than enough.

I'd bat to lunch if possible and hopefully you've got the lead to 450ish, but if the conditions are difficult for batting then just get declared and see if you can take advantage by getting a couple of early wickets

Prior gone, Siddle the man again. 459/6.

More problems for the Aussies, injury for Harris. Now Australia's bowlers beyond Siddle are the enigma that is Mitchell Johnson and the Hilf who takes a wicket every 333 balls.

Hopefully Bresnan plays a few shots, further compound the Aussie misery.

Bresnan gone, a deserved five wicket haul for Siddle, the only Aussie to have turned up for this test match.

150 for Trott, very good innings and other than the almost suicidal run, he has looked comfortable.

We have enough of a lead now, at least if we drop like flies it only shows there is life in the wicket everyone thought to be getting flatter and something for Anderson and Tremlett to work with.

Good fecking grief what is the English obsession with declaring?

There's 8 sessions of the bloody game left for crying out loud! Bat til we're out, get as big a lead as possible. It's what any other team would do in this position

Sorry if this has been posted.
Hugh Jackman has been injured during a quick game of cricket with fellow Australian Shane Warne while at The Ashes.

The actor was batting during a TV segment in Melbourne, when one of Warne's deliveries hit him in the groin.

Jackman fell to the ground but was able to laugh off the incident, saying: "I didn't pick it."

Warne jokingly replied: "Don't rub 'em, count 'em."

Ah, at last, someone I agree with!

Exactly, we're not even halfway through the test yet, we should be aiming not to need to bat again.

I've had many an angry rant on here with ridiculous English declaration and follow on decisions

This is a no brainer though. Even if they were considering declaration - which they won't be - won't happen til Trott passes 200 anyway

If you are going to declare, which I think there is no need to, it would be ridiculous to ever do so with less than a 500 run lead when there are 250 or so overs remaining.

Very good catch by Haddin, Swann gone swinging. Hilf gets his 3rd wicket of the Ashes!

That should end any discussions about declarations, it is not going to be that long now so we should get as many runs as we can.

Bowled him! Hilf gets another! 414 runs ahead, but it's reverse swinging so Anderson will be happy at that. 1 more to go...

Finally, all out for 513. Huge lead of 415 runs, England 10 wickets away from retaining the ashes.

Well done Siddle & Trott.

So, 415 to chase down, two and half days to do it, and if successful thwart English attempts to surpass - it really shouldn't happen, it can't happen surely.

Should be a formality for our bowlers. Would be surprised to see the Aussies reach 250 if that. Trott had a superb innings, impressive stuff.

Aussie openers playing like they don't have a care in the world, which is probably the best way to go about it. Managing well over 5 an over at the moment.

Goodbye, stupid stupid running. Idiotic from the Aussies, good start and you do that. Ricky will be ripping his hair out, pathetic running and Watson has a history of silly run-outs. Hughes gone.

Someone asking someone else to marry them via a message in the sky. 'Marry Me Kerri'.

You can tell that the cricket itself is quite boring atm as the commentators are more intrigued by what the message says rather than what is going on on the cricket field.

Watson edges it, Prior not sure if it carried, up to the 3rd umpire now. Replays show it did not carry, England still need 9 wickets (could be 8, not sure if Harris will return).

Tremlett bowling well at the moment.
