MERGED - The 2010/2011 ASHES tour thread...all Ashes related chat here please!

Well i dont really know how you sum up a day like that, one side bowled out for 98 the other ending it on 157-0......you have to say Australias batting was utterly horrendous today one of the worst batting innings ive ever watched, they just didnt learn from wicket after wicket falling due to pushing out at the moving ball, its not rocket science and these guys are meant to be the best Australia has to offer in their own backyard.

If England feck this up from here then they dont deserve to retain the Ashes, bat properly tomorrow and this game and the Ashes are gone for Australia.

BBC Test Match Special's Jim Maxwell:

"This is the most one-sided first day of a Test that I've ever seen - even including games with Bangladesh or Zimbabwe."

It was quiet weird, I left my television on all night with it on, I woke up a few times during the night but never stayed up - I assumed I dreamt it all and was stunned that what I saw actually happened.

It must surely be one of the worst days for Australia on home soil in their test match history.

Will there be ramifications for Ricky Ponting after a day like this?

It has to be said the batting from the Oz was rank

However you've got to bowl well to keep putting it just there to tempt and that's what we did. Excellent effort with the ball from our boys

Could we manage to throw this away !?!

Surely not

They'd need lynching if they do

No chance. Next 4 days just a formality to make it 2-1.

I can't see any resistance from the Aus batsmen in the second innings despite the certainty of pitch being much better to bat on. England'll have this rapped up before day 5.

Its not just Ponting, its the entire team including the selectors. The only two people that have warranted their inclusion in this side are Haddin and Hussey. The rest could quite easily be replaced with little to no ramifications.

Part of me hopes we get absolutely flogged so that Cricket Australia gets a proper clear out of all the old has beens and toss pots and actually work on youth development. Get people like Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Mathew Hayden, Glen McGrath in to actually work and nurture talent.

Wow.

Lowest against England at the MCG
Lowest first innings at the MCG
Lowest against England since 1968
Lowest score in Australian since 1984
Lowest at the MCG since 1981
Lowest against England at home since 1936

A1Dan = :D

I'm hoping Strauss doesn't get complacent when deciding when to declare.

I doubt they will, they'll be hoping to bat the day at the very least and then see where they are, somewhere between 450 and 500 I guess, and then take it from there...well that will be the plan, whether it works out like that we'll have to wait and see

well... I watched it up until Australia's final wicket so to wake up and find England 160-0 makes it just more incredible. You have to say England bowled very well in 'English' conditions, Anderson & Tremlett were top drawer and Bresnan did well to keep it tight. You also have to feel sorry for the Ozzie bowlers who had nothing to bowl at. England should now try and bat and get a lead 400-500 asap, especially as the Ozzies will have to play defensive fields. Looking at the pitch Swann should come in to it as well after 3-4 days or so, it will definitly take some spin.

I'd be very surprised if Swann bowls some serious spells. The seamers should have this wrapped up sooner rather than later.

Simply a dream day. Lovely soft ball to play with for 30-odd overs tomorrow now too. Turn the screw boys, turn the screw.

All the bullshit people were talking about after the 2nd test, plus 1 day into the 3rd about 'sympathy' for the Australians was put completely into context with the pasting we received. We're the better side, let's not just retain the Ashes but win this series comprehensively.

We'll have to see how the pitch goes tomorrow, but batting was made to look a lot easier when the sun cames out, if it carries on like that, I expect him to bowl a lot in their 2nd innings, especially if the pitch starts to take some serious turn late in the game

I'd happily declare at a 300 lead and give ourselves 3 days to bowl them out and score what runs are needed if it doesn't go quite to plan.

Important early wicket for the Aussies, Cook gone, nicely bowled by Siddle - 159/1.

Strauss gone as well, Hussey with a good catch - 170/2

I completely forgot about this due to having a debate I didn't want to have about our cities - how typical is it that we are in a glorious position yet we try to get out of it.

Lunch and England are in control at 226/2 (lead by 128). Other than losing the 2 early wickets, batting's been good and patient from the two English-South Africans. Siddle's bowled well, the delivery to get Cook was a beauty, but the other Aussies have been poor and Mitchell Johnson is back to his old self. Problems for Ponting, but Strauss will be very happy at what's happened so far today.

Do the Australians have feelings in that regard? With Trott and Pietersen being South African?

Siddle gets KP, he's been the Aussies best bowler

Trott almost run out, stupid running only the dive saving him
