MERGED - The 2010/2011 ASHES tour thread...all Ashes related chat here please!

Dropped by Hussey, 2nd chance for Australia to take another wicket and they've wasted it...

Steady progress so far. Australia didn't take their chances when they had them and these two have looked good since the early overs.

Time for some spin, Doherty into the attack...

That's lunch, England reach 90-1. Hussey's drop was a big moment in the session, could prove a costly mistake for the Aussies. Good recovery by England after losing Strauss very early. Could be a long day ahead for the Aussie bowlers.

This is just about the first time in my life that I wouldn't take a single Aussie bowler over an English bowler. Feels good after growing up through the carnage of Mcgrath, Gillespie, Warne etc etc.

Too easy this.

England number 1 in the world by this time next year.

HTH YHIHF.

feck me, it's hot out there.

Boring too actually...when Bollinger got Strauss out early on I thought we'd press on and do some damage.

If only Michael fecking Hussey held onto that catch!!!

Was funny to hear the barmy army break out into 'living on a prayer' aimed at Ponting and co.

Well, just got up to be informed by Sky that Cook's currently averaging 400 for the series! Not a bad start for a guy who was deemed by many the weak link of England's batting line-up.

If anyone's watching from Australia...did you guys notice the "subliminal" betfair adds squeezed in between deliveries in the last over?

Been saving my 1000th post on here this eve for when someone gets a hundred - well done Cookie!

Fanfeckingtastic knock, this has been a wonderful week from an english perspective :D

England 285-2 with 12 overs left on day 2.

Cook unbeaten in over 16 hours against australia now. Exceptional.

It's looking like all those hours Cookie spent on MERLIN are beggining to pay off. I wish that twat UJ was here so he could eat his words about KP. After this series the ACB will be giving Ponting the same treatment as UJ - the chop. haha

Relax bruv, this is one of the worst Australian sides ever produced, just enjoy the results for what they are.. smashing an aussie side and hopefully retaining the Ashes on their soil.

Alastair Cook hit an unbeaten 136 as England built a 72-run lead on day two of the second Test against Australia.
After his 235 not out in the first Test, Cook took his series aggregate to 438 with a chanceless knock as England reached 317-2 at the close.
The tourists made a bad start to the day when Andrew Strauss was bowled by Doug Bollinger playing no stroke.
But Jonathan Trott (78) and Kevin Pietersen (85 not out) helped Cook put them in a commanding position.
Once again, Australia's bowling attack was found wanting, with the seamers struggling to maintain a disciplined line and length and spinner Xavier Doherty unable to justify the faith shown in him by the selectors.

Good to see Pietersen scoring a few, lets hope he gets beyond 100, a BIG hundred is long overdue for him...

Wow.

Can't wait to watch the highlights - they're going to pulverise the Aussies. Wonder if KP can translate his score into a hundred.

England just doing par for the course in fairness - a very batter friendly pitch.

Hold your horses gimps

It's still well within our legendary powers to spaz this up...

This is Australia 2010

Can't see this side holding out for a draw on the last two days against Swann and co.

You never know, we could collapse tonight and on a pitch like this Oz have still got the batsmen to do it.

I'm just antijinxing really but I've learned over the years never to start hoping with England. Hope is a schoolboy error.

England doing to Australia what Australia have done to England so many times in the past. England should be looking to get >600 and leave them 2days and a bit to bowl Australia out. You'd fancy Swann to come in to it on the final 2 days.
Australia need a good day very very soon. They haven't been bullied like this since the glory days of the West Indies. They are on a slippery slding slope, it will be very difficult for them to turn it around in this series.
As for England's standing in World cricket; lets not forget they have a young side who are improving all the time. Because most of them don't play in the international 20/20 club cricket most non English cricket fans don't realise how good they are. Foolish, the 20/20 world cup this year should have given them a hint that England are the emerging power in cricket (finally after all those miserable years). Guys like Cook, KP, Morgan, Bell, Swann, Broad and Finn are only going to get better & better over the next 4-5 years.

Ive never seen an England side bowl, bat and field as well as this one does. And they're still improving as a side. They have that menacing competitive aura about them, which I've never seem before in an England side. They remind me of the great Ozzie sides of Steve Waugh.

We'll get a minimum of 250/300 tonight, which would give us a lead well of over 300, with two days to bowl out only three decent batsmen.

You're probably right lads, it's just this is England, in Oz... does... not... compute...

Also it looks like rain on Monday

Pietersen's 30, Swann's 31 and Bell's 28. I know cricketers go on a bit longer than footballers but those guys are in their prime, they hardly count as young players.

Some fantastic youngsters coming through Plech.

Northeast, Hales, Vince, Woakes, Kieswetter, Rafiq, Rashid just to name a few.

I reckon these kids can outplay this Aussie side.

I'll personally hand them the guillotine.

What will sacking Ponting achieve? He is your best batsman anyway.

There isn't much Ponting can do if his bowlers are so shit.

What will sacking Ponting achieve? He is your best batsman anyway.

It won't achieve anything, but will the ACB want to continue with the first captain in history to lose 3 Ashes series with the possibility of a fourth? I think not young toe-poke.Saying that England haven't won them yet, but it's on the cards.

Some rain forecast for tomorrow and for day 5 I believe :)

*pathetic....having to pray for rain like the English used to for so so many years....hehehe.

The trouble is the captain-in-waiting Clarke is even more out of form and struggling with injuries.

He's career is on a downer no doubt

2005 - 67.13 (15matches)
2006 - 88.86 (10 matches)
2007 - 38.4 (4 matches)
2008 - 47.28 (14 matches)
2009 - 38.77 (13 matches)
2010 - 44..7 (10 matches)

He scored 13 centuries in 2005 and 2006, but since has scored only 6 in 4 years.

Tendulkar had a dip, but seems to have found something else to motivate him...Ponting need to find something similar to not ruin his legacy.

Commanding position for England as expected.

Ponting's a great player but if they lose the Ashes series in Australia, his career will be over. Shame if it happened like that though, he has always been a great batsman, even though his leadership skills/tactics are questionable.
