Memphis | Manchester United Sub | Officially unravelled

He's not "frozen out", he's on the bench because he's simply not good enough and the team need players who actually contribute so they can win games. It's not a complicated concept.

Whatever you want to call it, it's the same thing. He had 20+ starts before Xmas and probably 4-5 after. He's clearly out of favour, is that partly down to his form yes of course.

But theres two factors here he's not going to regain his form/confidence and adapt his game to the PL sitting on the bench. And bar Martial it's not like any of the other players we have playing in wide positions have been tearing it up. So clearly he has been frozen out.

I'd rather have Depay wide right than Mata and while Lingard has done well at times and deserves to be first choice for now, i see no reason why he and Depay couldn't be rotated the odd game.

Absolutely. Not to mention we have several other players who genuinely need to feck off. If Memphis deserves to be sold then so do half of the squad - does anyone think selling 10+ players is a good idea?

I have no doubt there are a load of fans who think that would be a brilliant idea, every year.

It usually goes: ''I wish we would get rid of all this deadwood, yay Van Gaal sold all the deadwood we have a great squad now.'' 6 months later: ''We need to sell a load of this deadwood and buy new players''. Rinse repeat every year the same shit.

Lingard puts in much better performances than Memphis, LvG is under pressure and can't rely on someone who simply hasn't been performing when given the chance.

Look i like Lingard i do and i know he's quite the Caf darling right now for some reason, but much better is a stretch. He's had a few very good performances. Like his last match for instance but a lot of the time he's been pretty ineffective himself. But there he is in the team every week and given every opportunity to find his form, adapt to senior football and become a consistent player. Thats great for him but thats all happening while another younger player who a lot of the big clubs in europe were chasing and was brought here at great expense sits on the bench not being given much chance at all in any position to find some form.

Al i'm saying is Depay needs more playing time, if he doesn't get it then he will never adapt and develop. Which would be a terrible waste of such great potential. Bar Martial none of the players operating wide for us this season have been consistent enough for me to warrant them starting every game, Depay should be getting the odd start here and there.

I don't want Lingard to be a starter next year, but for now he is our best option. He works much harder defensively, he is good at keeping possession and linking up with our players.

Memphis loses the ball too much and rarely does his dribbles comes off in the PL, his Work off the ball is not exactly great either. He will get his chance next year to show what he can do, most likely under a new manager.

I actually think LvG has been giving him a lot of play time, considering the performances he has put in. Imo he can't blame LvG for not playing, it just hasn't been his season.

You can't simply putsomeone in the team to play them into form especially when their presence in the team is having little benefit and having adverse effect. Earlier in the season,we had two passengers in Memphis and Rooney, putting ridiculous pressure on young Martial.

When Memphis did start,he was usually poor and on more than one occasion hooked off at half time. That's just a wasted substitution. A struggling player should be staking their places by performing well when given subsititute appearances. Memphis seems to usually do the opposite. Easily losing the ball then not pushing hard enough defensively at a time we usually need that.

Blame Van Gaal for many things, but he has more than given Memphis chances. It's the player who has wasted them. Van Gaal has his own head to worry about.

He has had 8 starts since Christmas, has been in every match day squad and has played 874 minutes, in no world is that being frozen out. You realize not everyone can be starter right? And he doesn't deserve to be one. He has had 2,355 minutes this season to gain form/confidence and adapt his game, so clearly he hasn't been frozen out. He has been rotated with Lingard and Mata, he just started against Villa and had 6 starts from mid-February to mid-March and bar one game did nothing to suggest he deserved to keep a start spot. Any 21-22 year old who has been as poor as he has been this season would be over the moon with how much he has played for a club like Manchester United.

Much better might be stretch but he has been as good if not better individually and I don't even think it is debatable who has linked up better with Rashford and Martial and whoever gets the best out of our start players is going to be preferred. Jesse also works harder for the team and offers a much better all around game, credit to Memphis he has done really well tracking back lately. Despite all of this anyway, Jesse has only played 258 minutes more than him.

Memphis is in the team every week, van Gaal job is on the line and there are minimum expectations in which he is struggling to meet and Memphis is doing to help meet those expectations. We can't afford to start Memphis every game, Rashford and Martial have impressed and that is why they start. Yet Memphis still gets plenty of time, time he wouldn't even be close to afforded at any other top team.

Everyone needs playing time, Lingard, Rashford, Martial, Mata, Rooney, Adnan, Andreas etc. they all need game time to gain form and develop and adapt and all that shit. Why should Memphis be any more accommodated than them? None of the other players operating wide for us this season have started every game and Memphis is getting the odd start here and there.

He's had a shit season, I don't think anyone is denying that. I don't think anyone is trying to claim he's nailed on to be a success here either. I do however struggle to see why anyone would actually want to sell him at this stage. Lamela for example endured and equally underwhelming start to life at Tottenham.

Spurs didnt and still havent signed a player better than Lamela in his position. Thus allowing him to reclaim it.

We have Martial tearing it up in Memphis position. Rashford doing miracles at CF. and Lingard working harder and I presume having better connection with the other 2 guys.

If I was Memphis id have won a place on the team from Lingard by now. He should forget about that LW position. Its gone...

Rashford and Martial aren't both gonna be fit and in form all time, Memphis will get plenty of game time next year. I'm not sure if he actually can play as a #10 or if that's just LVG being LVG - probably the latter I'd suspect but you never know - one of his better performances for us came as a striker against Watford.

I definitely wouldn't sell him, and would tell him that he has a future at OT, but only if he improves hugely on what he's shown this season. I understand that he wants his talent to be believed in, but LVG has been, if anything, more patient and persistent with him, than with any player not named Wayne Rooney. He looks to me to be a player who could be a consistent goalscorer/game changer given he's gone on the kind of scoring runs that none of Martial, Lingard, Rashford etc have gone (in Holland), and he's definitely got trickery that few do. So far a young player to have that, is worth giving a second season to. But it has to be made clear to him, that the standard he's played at this season is not even close to being good enough.

My hope is that a change in manager, his own hard work/application and a better team/system next season, brings out the best in him.

Neither Rashford nor Lingard play on the left so they're irrelevant to Memphis' progress. Martial absolutely is, but with us being European competition there are more than enough games for the pair of them even if Martial is the better of the two. And Martial may even get games as a striker.

Besides, it's silly to jump the gun with statements like it's "gone". He is 21, and if we don't sell/loan him, he might just show his Dutch league in the PL. He certainly had people creaming their pants with what he was doing for PSV far more than anything Lingard and Rashford have done. He apparently drove them to the title at the age of 20. And he's had nowhere near the same exposure to English football as the two of them have had.

What qualities Depay possesses to perform even at decently in right wing?

For me, most of qualities he has would work out on the left or even in the middle if he can sort himself out next season. His passing is suitable for right wing though. But, Jesse offers much more balance, work rate, off ball movement, link up play, defending etc. Lingard might not be a top player or winger. But, Depay with all the qualities he possess hasn't outshone Lingard much if at all to take his spot in first team (against decent teams).

I can understand why some on here might prefer Lingard over Depay as the 'safer' bet which is fine as long as they accept that you will get a 7/10 from Lingard every game and never more.

But why does it have to be Lingard or Depay? What on earth has Juan Mata done in 2 1/2 years at the club? This Utd side has a solid base and what we need is a spark in attack so i would much rather see Lingard, Depay, Martial and Rashford all out there together in whatever front 4 variation you like

There's lots wrong with Mata but he's absolutely miles better than Depay.

Depay has yet to put a good perform or two against any decent side in EPL. And people can't forget how his lack of tracking back on left side or in the middle cost us a few direct goals from it. Martial is the best attacker in the squad yet he works his ass off to make sure he defends well the other side of the pitch usually.

As much as people keep talking that Mata could have done better and he does not really suit us etc including me, I am sure majority of our goals in last 2 seasons came from him one way or another.

His lack of strength and safe passing annoy the hell out of a lot of people but his vision when he 'dares' is above everyone else's we have at the moment.

I agree with the bolded part, personally i just don't think Lingard has been so good that he shouldn't be rotated to give others a chance.

...does anyone think selling 10+ players is a good idea?

Not me.
I've always stuck to the idea that to build/maintain a league/trophy winning team you need 2 top quality players (which may include a Galactico class player) + 2-3 squad players (these are normally players that few have ever heard of). Of the 4-5 players bought, you will find 1-2 players will click and make the first team regularly.

If you decide to change half the first team (or even 10) in 1 year, you are in for big trouble.

Well i think he's actually only had 6 starts since January, but were splitting hairs here 6-8 the point is he hasn't played much. Rotated with Mata and Lingard? I think not mate, theres probably only been one game since January where Depay has started that Lingard didn't (Liverpool away i think and that was only because Jesse was suspended). Whenever Depay has started it's been on the left for the most part.

Much better might be stretch but he has been as good if not better individually and I don't even think it is debatable who has linked up better with Rashford and Martial and whoever gets the best out of our start players is going to be preferred. Lingard right now links up better with Rashford and Martial no doubt, but then again he plays every fecking game so i would like to think so. Hard to form an understanding and link up well with other players from the bench.

That bolded part is actually the exact point i have been trying to make but it seems to not be landing with people. I'm not advocating Depay should be given preferential treatment, i would like to see Lingard, Depay, Pereira and Januzaj all rotated evenly or at least at all. Lingard has did well but i still don't think he should be given preferential treatment and start every single game. We have a lot of talented young players i would like to see given more playing time and 3 of them are barely getting a look in.

Eh he's a winger and right footed, usually they are the two main qualities that qualify you to play RW.

He's played there in the past for PSV, look i don't know if he would be any good there but we won't know until he's given a run.

He's not displacing Martial any time soon, Rooney's back with Mata and Herrera also he's not getting in at no10. So where else can he get some playing time?

Lingard preferred side is left, he only plays on the right because he's our best option there. As soon as we get a proper right winger, Memphis is #3 in line to left wing spot.

Because next season the pecking order has to be exactly the same as it has this season.

Nowhere.

This may come as a shock to you but we are under zero obligation to ensure Depay gets game time. What you also don't seem to understand is that Depay's lack of game time is down to him being atrocious. If he can oust Martial (lol) then fair play otherwise bin him back to Netherlands.

Because next season the pecking order has to be exactly the same as it has this season.
Actually you're right, one of the worst LVG decisions was to take Young out of the first XI and throw in Memphis from day one. So yeah it's possible that Martial or Lingard will find themselves on the bench next season.

But for me "pecking order" is a result of how good are players that can play in particular position. And Memphis is on the very end as far as left wing is considered. And I seriously doubt he can play anywhere else.

So yeah it's possible that Martial or Lingard will find themselves on the bench next season.
Nope. Lingarad, probably, but mostly because he's not actually the level we need from a starter, even though he presently deserves to on currenet form.

At present, I agree. But let's see what the situation is next season.

Of course Martial won't be benched, it was a dig at LvG retarded decisions ;) As for Lingard I hope he won't be a starter next season but very useful player to have in squad.
At present, I agree. But let's see what the situation is next season.
If he is to play regularly, he has to improve massively overall. Personally I don't think he's talented enough to do it.

He's been a disappointment, that much is for sure. I think it's crazy to talk about selling him though. Definitely should be given a second season to prove himself, especially if it's under a different manager. It's not like the Di Maria situation where he didn't want to be here and didn't look bothered. I feel like Memphis is quite motivated to fight through this.

Nowhere.

Haha because i said that right, yeah i don't understand lol

This may come as a shock to you mate but the club does have an obligation to develop the young players in our squad with potential. Like it or not Depay cost a shit load of money, it's in the clubs best interests to make sure he turns out to be worth that transfer fee.

Why you hate Depay so much i have no idea nor do i care to find out either.

But what the feck is the club supposed to do? It's in him and what he does in training and then it has to translate to doing anything productive once he's given a chance. It's not like if you play a shite player week in week out he'll magically turn into a good player, this is not FIFA.

But what the feck is the club supposed to do? It's in him and what he does in training and then it has to translate to doing anything productive once he's given a chance.

Theres only so much the club can do mate, but having patience with him and maybe a bit more playing time even a few more 20/30 minute sub appearances could help the process.

A lot of it is on Depay himself agreed, but for him to develop he will need more playing time. That is an indisputable fact, right now he isn't getting much of it. We can say he's not playing because he's been in bad form and yeah it's true. But how does he get into form if he isn't playing?

It's a chicken/egg situation. The club paid £25m for him, we can't keep buying young players from other countries for huge amounts and then binning them after 6-8 months because they are not instant superstars. At some point next season he will have to be given another run in the side if after that it's still not happening for him then we will have to cut our losses.

It's not like if you play a shite player week in week out he'll magically turn into a good player, this is not FIFA.

Yeah you are right mate but to be fair to myself nowhere in any of my posts have i actually advocated us doing that.

So he is right footed and a winger?

Well, he is right footed alrite but his skill set is suited for left wing IF he is to play outwide. And, he is a winger that can't beat his man or track back to help his fb or can't knock the ball and outpace his man etc. So claiming of him being a winger is pretty much funny atm.

LVG gave him some playing time here and there. Even sending Martial to the right for him. It is clear that the coaching staff does NOT think he is a right winger or a right sided forward at all. It is not just me.

I do hope he will improve next season somehow though.

He can do all of those things, he just hasn't found his form yet and shown it much for United. He might never but time will tell, i hope next season under a new manager who puts more faith in him he will find his feet.

The current coaching staff also think Blind is a CB, Mata is a RW, Fellaini is a CM, Young is a RB, LB, Striker or just about anywhere except winger etc etc. So i wouldn't put too much stock into what they think a players best position is to be honest mate.

TBF, all those players have performed well enough to justify that. Who of those players let us down often?

Looks like he has cleaned up his twitter and instagram account. I don't wont to read into anything but I wonder what is going on?

Nothing to see here. He has deleted all the stuff related to his official sponsors Under Armour as well.

Not really Mata is shit on the right wing because he's not a winger. Fellaini has been shit in a midfield 2 because thats not his position. Young was crap at RB & LB hardly his fault granted because he's not a fullback he's barely had a game on the wing this year ffs. Blind has been ok at CB but he's not good enough in the air to play there long term for me, and i'd put my house on him not playing there with any regularity under a different manager.

Martial LW, Young ST, Mata RW and fecking Lingard at No10 vs Spurs. That tells us all we need to know about the current coaching staffs judgement on what a players best position should be. They haven't a fecking clue.

You are talking about the general tactic there. Those players you mentioned get on with their jobs despite whatever positions they are asked to play and it worked.

Every manager gambles with a few things here and there in certain matches. It is not an example of anything new. Should I remind you about how Fergie used to play his players out of positions? He was a master of it.

Used to think Fellaini was a sign of our decline....

I take it back, Depay is! At least Fellaini actually does something now and again. This sack of crap actually pulled out of a goalscoring chance today. He was getting there before Schmeichel but, he slowed down when he saw him racing out. He shat himself.
