Memphis | Manchester United Sub | Officially unravelled

Reportedly wore '26' in training.

Some may recall that training kits used to have different numbers to the game shirt numbers. Scholes was 53, for example.

But when DHL signed that training kit deal they asked for the training numbers to be the same as jersey numbers.

Oh course it could change, like LVG asking Wilson to get a number with a 9 in it.

Dont know if this has already been discussed but I saw this in an article about Memphis in The Guardian.
In an interview last year with Hart van Holland, his mother, when asked about her son’s aspirations, said: “He wants to play for Manchester United and then a club in Spain.”

I wonder if that is going to be a thing, like with Ronaldo, always bubbling away in the background. Especially when Van Gaal moves on.

Chances are that it could be a similar situation as with Ronaldo, but is that necessarily a bad thing?

The way I see it, if wanting to eventually play for Real Madrid/Barcelona motivates himself to establish himself as one of the best players in the league, then perfect. It's unrealistic to expect every player to spend their whole career at a club. "One club men" are very much the exception to the rule in this day and age...

He's already played for PSV so he wouldnt be a one club man. I would expect him to go and spend his twilight years somewhere else, as many, like Evra, Ferdinand or Park did. But if he wants to go to Spain for his peak years, that is something else.

That is not to say I would resent him for it. He is well within his rights. And of course Ill be happy if he emulates the other side of Ronaldo - his brilliance - although of course wanting to play in Spain like Ronaldo does not make it more likely that you will become the player Ronaldo is.

Just disappointing when someone arrives and they already have their eye on another goal, beyond playing for United. We usually like to think playing for us is the height of someone's ambition, we arent used to people seeing us as a stepping stone. I dont know if he does, I dont know how much credence to give to this, perhaps throwaway remark. But its something to consider.

I don't think it's a throw away remark, it kind of suits who he is, and his ambitions. But I think you'll find few players in the PL who wouldn't take the chance to play with a Messi or Ronaldo and compete for La Liga and CL titles every season. If his time at PSV is anything to go by however, he wouldn't consider a move before winning anything.

True. I guess she has just articulated something that is true for most footballers.

He only got 26 because him and Kagawa got the same body type so they didnt have to buy new kits.

I wouldnt worry about it too much. Firstly, he'd have to reach absolutely sensational heights for Barca or Real to be interested. Secondly, even if he did reach these heights, it'd take him atleast 4 seasons which is a long long time in football. Much of Barca's current lot would be near their end, ditto Real. We could be the more attractive club then, no one knows when the time frame is so long. The only thing in Depay's mind would be us atm, that's good enough.

He has no affiliation to Madrid or Barca, we as a club just need to make sure we stay on top and he won't want to leave.

well the ronaldo departure shows even if we are on top, its no guarantee to keep any player

Back then Madrid were in a different financial league to us. If we'd been able to offer star players the massive wages that we can now - arguably even more freely than Madrid - then it's not inconceivable that we could have kept Ronaldo. Their advantage over us now is footballing, and Adam's right to suggest that if we can get back to being a fixture in the latter stages of the Champions League, we won't have any particular reason to worry about them poaching our players.

I do not think money was the reason why ronaldo went, has we know. That maybe a one off situation, now I think we are a better club financially, we just got to start backing it up on the pitch

Ronaldo always wanted to play for Madrid. The fact he chose to join them even at a weak point showed it was more for love than to win more. Memphis as far as we know hasn't dreamed of Madrid since a little boy.

No, it wasn't the reason he wanted to go but it could definitely have been a reason that made him decide to stay. You see it time and time again these days - a player wants to move for playing time, or to a more successful club, or because they've fallen out with their current club/manager/teammates, but they end up staying because their current club can offer a bumper salary.

But I agree, it's time to get back amongst the big boys on the pitch. Which was Adam's original point. Do that, and we won't have much to fear in terms of losing players to them.

Some sarcasm was needed after someone asking the same question every single year about pre season numbers vs real numbers.

Excuse me, I've never seen that issue raised in the 9 years I've been reading this site! Here you are, impatient from questions about preseason squad numbers after 2 years! Or were you a longtime reader before you signed up?

No i used the Man Utd official forum till it bugged out permanently. Same stuff was asked there.

But its not like im acting pissed off, im just giving you a poke. If you followed the tours the best 9 years you would of known people play with weird numbers :P

Wind your fecking neck in.

Hasn't kicked a ball, talking about a transfer to Madrid. I cannot begin to understand, this is beyond me.

I never noticed that, if it's the case. You mean Giggs wore something other than 11, Van Der Sar not wearing number 1, for a bit of fun, or because it's too much trouble to give them their proper number?

In the case of new players coming, like Memphis, he might want a number that is technically taken but about to become available, like Van Persie's 20. Or maybe we're loaning out Januzaj and he'll take 11 when he leaves, but they haven't announced it yet so he's wearing another number in the meantime.

Are you perhaps thinking of back when the players all had different numbers in training?

Nah its every year during pre season training (and sometimes normal training), you see players pop up with weird numbers and everyone thinks thats their new number, followed by a statement of manutd.com that its not official yet :P.

No clue why, just dont think they can be bothered to waste time on it before they know whose leaving and whose in.

Lets just hope not, even DDG we thought hey Atletico boy wants to play for that mob. Or depay does not become another sterling later down the line, which lets hope not either

Yea, seems that he's doing all he can to make Memphis feel comfortable at United, top lad.

Or actually we might have an explanation to why he's wearing those shit girly jeans.

Comfortable?

If a new colleague pulled that shit with me I'd hand in my notice the same day and never go back.

I'd also install security cameras all over my house and put locks on my bins.
