Great lunch time surprise

You've wetted my appetite early this year Woody!

Good news. One of the most promising attackers in Europe and a reasonable fee.

The Sneijder saga not-withstanding (who knows what happened there), our experience with transfers involving dutch players seems to me to be quite positive - less posturing, less manipulative agent involvement and general annoying time-wasting than most other nationalities we deal with regularly.
Maybe Robben is another counter example..

So all these posts about how they said all along that we should sign Depay, how he is going to be great for us etc. wonder how many will will go opposite way in a year if things not going his or our way, throwing him under the bus ignoring his age because for some senior player is 13 and above.

It's more about the ease when dealing with Dutch clubs than the Dutch players themselves.

This is surreal, one of the best transfers we've made in a long time in terms of what we pay compared to the talent. We usually overpay by a hefty bit and here I think we're even on the lower end.

Extract from the Guardian:

The rest of the PSV Eindhoven squad were informed of the 21-year-old’s deal at training by their manager, Phillip Cocu. It is understood that Depay is free to play the final two matches of the season before completing his move to Old Trafford. Once the move is finalised Depay will become the fourth player to move from PSV to United following in the footsteps of Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Park Ji-sung.

Hmm. Hopefully he pulls out of any 50:50's!

Can he do it on a cold night at Stoke?

Needs to bulk up?

Can he do it in midfield 2?

Can he play against Cristal Palace?

Your answer for your second question :nono:

Depay De Price

'Liverpool clear to sign Memphis Depay as Paris Saint-Germain pull out of transfer race' - Metro, May 5.

'Liverpool FAVOURITES to land £22m Man Utd and PSG target Memphis Depay' - Daily Express, May 6.

'Liverpool News: Midfielder DONE DEAL, Barcelona bid, Depay move close' - Daily Star, May 6.

Let's look at that Daily Star story more closely: 'The Telegraph report that Liverpool look likely to land PSV star Memphis Depay by default. They say Manchester United are continuing to drag their heels over a deal while PSG have cooled their interest following news of their approach leaking.'

So to the Daily Telegraph. 'Liverpool transfer news and rumours: 'Reds in pole position to sign Memphis Depay from PSV,' reads their catchy headline.

'Liverpool have been left in pole position to sign PSV's Memphis Depay - by default, reports The Sun,' the Telegraph claimed.

And so, finally, to The Sun. 'LVG no go on Memphis: Man United losing race for Depay...to Liverpool,' read their headline a remarkable four days earlier.

And so to May 7, and Manchester United's official Twitter account: 'Manchester United have reached an agreement with PSV Eindhoven & Memphis Depay for the player's transfer, subject to a medical. Pending the successful completion of the medical, the deal will go through once the transfer window opens in June.'

From 'no go' to go go in four days, via four different newspapers. Well done everyone, take the afternoon off. Please.

How did you experience the last few weeks with all the speculations about a possible transfer?
'It was an exciting and pretty hectic period, and to have a choice between so many top clubs doesn't make it any easier. For me, Manchester United is an absolute dream club, so I didn't need any convincing of the guys who already play at Manchester United’, Memphis says. ‘They told me only positive things though, and I'm looking forward to playing with my Dutch teammates next to all the other great players of Manchester United. And working with manager Louis van Gaal again is also a big bonus.’

A lot of clubs were interested in signing you?
Yes, but you shouldn't believe all the rumors in the media. In the end it was just a matter of feeling, not a matter of money.

Didn't you consider playing with PSV in the Champions League?
I've learned so much at PSV, not only on the pitch but also as a person. That makes me grateful, but I really felt it was time for me to move on. And you can't deny the interest of a club like Manchester United. I’m proud of winning the title with PSV. It’s something the fans deserved, and something I wanted so bad as well. I wish the club all the best for coming season, and hopefully they’re lifting a trophy again next year.

Your agency have had a busy couple of weeks?
Not only now they have been busy. Every day we work together on the big plan. Of course I also would like to thank SEG Football for the last couple of weeks, but I really appreciate them for always standing by my side and helping me dream, believe and eventually achieve.'

Kees Vos and Kees Ploegsma worked together on helping Memphis to get as much information as possible to make a final decision on his future.

Kees Vos: 'Memphis joined SEG at the age of 16 and by then we already recognized the huge potential he had. It makes us very proud that Memphis developed so much since then and always lived up to the expectations.'

Kees Ploegsma Jr., who has worked together with Memphis intensively since he joined the company, is obviously very proud of his client. 'We will have a medical soon and a lot of paperwork to take care of. Memphis realizes that this is just the beginning, and he has to work really hard to make sure that a lot of memorable moments will follow.

Well done to the club on backing the manager, and fast. I'd be a lot more exited if even one of LvG's signings so far had improved our first team though.

Are you actually serious?

Evra was leaving so we needed and left-back. Luke Shaw was one of the best in the country, young, and English. He's probably not been as good as we might have hoped so far, but he's had some really good performances and he's a long-term signing. He's certainly improved the first team, since the alternative if we hadn't signed him would have been Fabio or Ashley Young, seemingly - aside from Blind obviously.

Herrera took a while to establish himself in the team, but he's almost definitely our best midfielder after Carrick. We've been saying for ages that we needed someone with a bit more of a creative spark in the midfield, someone with energy and who can get goals. Herrera has done all of those things. Again, he's definitely improved the first team.

Di Maria started well, but has been poor for most of the season. His talent is unquestionable though and when he was playing well, he not only improved the first team, but he was our best player by quite a distance. He'll come good again, I'm sure.

There's three players right there who have all improved the first team. Blind and Rojo both improved the squad, if not the first team and have both proven to be solid signings. Falcao has been the only let-down, in my mind. In my opinion, the transfer policy under van Gaal has been very good so far and I think Depay will be a success as well.

Anyway, welcome to the club Memphis!

So how's the weather in the Netherlands? Here's hoping Depay doesn't whine about the crappy Manchester weather.

So guys and gals, which position do you think LVG will play him, right or left CB?

Recall the saying: 'never believe what you read in the newspapers'. I've been saying for quite awhile now the press no longer has a handle on clubs and their business. Many take their news from forums like us or from Twatter. They even take some of our buzz words which has been funny. I caught that Scouse Winter earlier in the season plagiarising. It's a shame but it was inevitable. The press has been living off its footy news but now that's gone we could actually see the demise of more mainstream newspapers. Sad but technology has killed them.

This could very well mean that Di Maria is moving on.

Depay is a left sided forward.

Depay is another example that english media is clueless and don't know what LvG will do in the summer. According to them that deal was off and PSG and Pool were favorites, now he is a United player like I expected
I only care about journos from the other team which is involved or the country of that team, could be wrong too, but if they report something, there might be interest from us. All those "journalists" in England are really annoying.

This could very well mean that Di Maria is moving on.

Depay is a left sided forward.

Di Maria can play on both sides and in midfield, doesn't mean anything to be honest. We lacked a Depay type of winger. Explosive, direct, goal threat. We have creators, but lacking end product, so I don't think Depay signing means anything for Di Maria.

Pretty good record with PSV players so far, jury still out on Pereira of course, hope Depay will be another success story.

Not really. I'm sure di maria occupied the right for Real before Bale arrival. Plus he can play in midfield.
