Memphis Depay | PSV confirm deal with Man Utd is agreed!

How do we know he will be more like Hazard than Moura (who hasn't exactly lit it up at PSG) ?

We obviously don't. Isn't this the whole point of young players, that you don't know how they will turn out and that it's always a gamble? You can only do your best to try to gamble on the right player, and Depay seems to fit in that category.

There have been several reports saying we are wanting top talent ready to hit the ground running, right now Memphis doesn't look to me like he'd be certain to start over Ashley Young on the left of the front 3.

..... If he fails abroad, dear me, The Eredivisie might as well stop producing players.

You know alot about him fellow Dutchman. I agree with you, especially on that last bit. He could be flop since he's only a talent, but he is a special one. When you know his background and now see the improvement in his performances since he's gotten over his attitude problems it's amazing. He matured to a full team member in no time and became the main man of PSV, he completely changed. He's got everything you look for in a talent.

Lets be honest, if we sign him and he turns out to be crap, we can all just abuse @NL Max ;)

I would happily take abuse if he flops here if we sign him, I'd take it like a man. Unfortunately he's going to make it :D

An in-form Memphis right now would be better than Ashley Young attacking wise, he can definately compete. He might not start the big games because of his defending but as it currently stands, next season we already have: Di Maria, Januzaj, Young, Lingard, Nani, Mata and maybe even Wilson(not sure). I expect Nani to leave, but that will be plenty of options imo with Memphis for a 433. Even more so if the rumours about a new versatile striker are true (although I personally think he'll keep RvP).

Young isn't great by any means but he has actually done it at PL level which is quite a big step up from the Eredivisie IMO, so I am not sure if that is the case. There are a lot of names there you have listed but not a single one of them bar Di Maria is a proven top class wide man and even he doesn't offer much in the way of goals. I just look at that list of players and think it's all going to rest on Rooney's shoulders again for the goals.

He is a risk, yes, that is the same thing with all signings that we are going to make anyway. I'd much prefer us to sign a young and exciting player like Depay albeit playing in a "weaker" league, than a proven world class player because we all know how signing Falcao, a proven goal machine had panned out for us thus far.

There's more excitement watching a young talent fulfil his talent than an already proven player doing his thing or maybe underperforms for a bit and then gets slaughtered by the wonderful English media.

Neither does Angel Di Maria who was definitely top talent ready to hit the ground running after coming off an outstanding year. Depay can come in and be a star or be wasted talent, you're never sure and the history of transfers show you that.

I like Depay, no reason not to get him. I trust NL Max's opinions over those who only watched him a few times or not at all.

Di Maria has had some issues on the personal front not to mention that his best ever form came in a role that we are not able to use him in. My point was merely that the recent reports have said we want players who at least have shown form at the top level to hopefully increase the chances of success, of course there is no direct science to it though.

Max has made some very good posts I agree, however I also have seen him close to a dozen times and I'm not even saying he's poor, I just don't feel he's an outstanding talent that we must have and who will make our current side any better.

My main point was mainly to state that we have witnessed more misfits then fits from the Eredivisie. When you scale the both parties the category misfits will bear more weight. From the players you mentioned, Tadic and Pelle have made an admirable start and Chadli has not really been the leathal product yet, no ?

''I think that that is actually pretty irrelevant to the case of Depay''

I have to disagree with you there, because many members on this forum have not seen Depay play and therefore have a fair right to be doubtful whether he is not just another misfit from the Eredivisie. Statistics show that there are more failures then successes, but i was quick to state that i place Depay higher then the players i mentioned on that list.

But that would be true for most leagues though, wouldn't it? Especially if you're including youth players.

The case of Memphis to United is a bit special though as LvG is the manager, none of the clubs who purchased the players mentioned on your list had the inside knowledge and relationship that LvG has on Memphis.

But I think that we are very much on the same page when it comea to Memphis so this discussion is quite needless in truth. :)

I don't think he looked any worse than any other dutch player out there against Turkey.

They didn't play as a team at all, but in the first half Blind and Depay linked up quite well a few times, which he nearly opened the scoring with a low shot.

No doubt he is still a rough diamond and he might not walk straight into the team, but he is worth spending the money on for the potential.

Without having seen too much of him but read a lot I would rate him as a "if the price is right let`s try it" signing for us.
Any ideas about his price tag?

However comparisons with AdM, Bale or Reus seem a bit far-fetched right now.

Probably 30m€.

The Van Gaal relationship may swing the other way, in the sense that he'd only sign him if he knew he wasnt going to stunt his development. He seems to care about players from the Dutch team.

Is Depay a better bet than Firmino or Felipe Anderson? Im tempted to go for Firmino of them all.

why should we sign another CAM? It's the same as with de Bruyne. No matter how good they are, we don't need them. The only attacking position we could / should strengthen is on the wing!

He's is a central player! Doesn't matter what he can do elsewhere. We have made that mistake several times starting with Veron, continued with Anderson and did it again with Kagawa. Signing players for positions they haven't performed at their former club is a big gamble. Sign a proper winger if you need one and don't try to convert players.

OK!!

Until recently Di Maria was considered a winger and Mata excelled on the weekend playing on the wing. I think we need somebody direct and tricky - if firmino isnt that kind of player I stand corrected.

I would actually go Depay > Anderson > Firmino.

When I say linked I mean solid links. I generally filter out those kind of stories. Looking at those links:

the first is a brief link from eurosport, EUROSPORT (thats a flag). the article is 2 paras long (another flag), without any mention of our name (flag) beyond the title which says: 'the likes of...' (flag).

2nd, Fichajes - I know these guys from the daily speculation, but dont know their credibility. They most likely reported based on an English sites 'report' AKA transfer laundering.

3rd, Zamperini is a notorious hot head with a big mouth, who most likely is trying to drum up business.

There really is no such thing as a solid link, unless someone like Ogden or Mitten run with it i suppose. The rest are just fabricated, clickbait nonsense.

Would it be better for him if he stays in the Dutch league for another year? Seems like he is not ready yet to move up to the next level

Solids the wrong word to use, but by reading through twitter each day you can get a good idea of what is a potentiall y real link and what isnt.

Our head scout was sat with Firminos agent.
Berahino watched one of our games at old trafford.
Felipe Anderson was scouted (thats a stretch I know)

They are what I would call a solid/real transfer links.

United are linked with most good players at one time or another, so for me, I would narrow solid links down to a few select journos reporting on them. Twitter is obviously mostly nonsense with the except of a very small number of accounts.

A scout watching a player isn't a legitimate transfer link, its just one of many players we probably scout, most of which we never hear about and never wind up at United. Berahino at OT is not unlike any number of players who may watch us as fans or for the experience of it, so i don't put much weight on that.

Is Firmino not capable of playing on the wing?

Firmino is good from either side, no different to Memphis in terms that neither play as an actual winger, they play the role drifting inwards all the time, same way Mata plays it.

We'll see this summer.

berahino - as a fan, sat with his agent? The only time I remember that kind of thing happening is when a players just signed for us. Odemwingie was slaughtered for daring to entering QPRs car park.

Firmino - we scout many players, felipe anderson being one, but its not often reported that our scout is entertained by said players representative. The same thing happened with Kroos last year, who I feel was close to signing for us.

Another year in the Eredivisie wouldn't be bad for him, but he's ready for a step up. Many expected him to leave after the worldcup, but he decided to stay 1 more year to win the title.

PSV already confirmed he's leaving and Tottenham made an offer last season so I doubt it very much that he's staying.
