Ridiculously promising? Shall keep an eye out on them then

Although...

@ViktorFagerLFC: According to @GraemeBailey, Liverpool FC will rival any offer for Memphis Depay this summer. #LFC

Don't think a winger is what we need unless it's a player like Sanchez (world class, can play as a striker).

I've always had a soft spot for Nani but I would concede that inconsistency at 21 is a whole lot different to inconsistency at 28. Nani is unlikely to change, Depay might.

Also i really dont think there are any question marks hanging over LVG from the board's point of view.
Well for all of depays supposed inconsistencies, he has like what, 23 goals in 30 games this season, along with 6 or 7 assists? Seems pretty great to me, considering he is only 21 and a winger, not a striker.

Should have added that i haven't seen a whole lot of Depay outside of the World Cup but was just a general comment that its more understandable to be inconsistent at that age but those stats seem pretty impressive

I can understand some having reservations as the Dutch league is very poor, but I can't think of many more realistic options for the left sided forward in a front 3, and there is no doubting he has the tools to be a very good player and more importantly the mental attitude.

I really see no downside to signing him, at all. It's a bit like Blind last summer, it just makes all kinds of sense.

I'm pretty certain we'l get him as Van Gaal is in charge. If I'm not mistaken, there were reports that it was him that advised Depay to play there for another season and to move this summer, wouldnt have done it if he wasn't interested.

Rival? Thats nice..like they can afford to go head to head with United financially never mind him being a big fan of LVG.

If we sign him he'll either be brilliant or another total flop, I just don't think we're very good at developing talent anymore.

I love the statement from some people: "I haven't really watched him but I don't rate him"

When we bought Di Maria, I was extremely happy and optimistic. However, even if we sign Ronaldo or Reus (nevermind Depay), I am not sure these players would reach the form they showed in their previous clubs. The philosophy seems to be pretty complicated and intellectually demanding to be adhered to.

Depay played for him already. Plus he seems like he wouldnt struggle mentally and physically like Di Maria. He isnt a star name, so the attention and expectation wouldnt be so high. I dont have any doubts about Depay that he will be good enough for the price quoted.

People saying he's an Everton level player are you having a laugh? The guy is 21 since last month and scored around 20 goals this season from a wide position.

He is clearly one of the best prospects in the world and it would be very disappointing if we don't sign him.

Steady. He's scoring a lot of goals in the Eredivisie. It's very hit or miss.

My bad, I forgot you must play in the might BPL and prove yourself at Stoke if you want people to consider you a good player.

Memphis has a very good chance to succeed in the English league and holding the underwhelming performances of previous Eredivisie transfers against him is rather unfair because each player should be judged on his own merit than being type-casted into a common mold.

For the likes of Kuyt, Kezman or Kalou there were Suarez, Eriksen (arguably a Top 3 attacking midfielder in the league and has scored 21 goals in less than 2 seasons), Bony and Tadic (one of the leading assist-makers this season).

Infact you could find veritable flops from just about every league from Marcelino, Soldado, Bogarde, Luque, Robinho, Aspas (La Liga); Marrarone, Corradi, Shevchenko, Aquilani, Jovetic, Mutu (Serie A); Postiga, Hugo Viana, Anderson (Primeira Liga); Marlet, Cheyrou, Bellion (Ligue 1) to even intra league transfers like Kewell, Torres, Rodwell, Keane, Carroll, Downing etc.

You don't stop buying players because some others from that league didn't perform as well as envisaged.

Id love to sign this guy but priorities wise we need a world class:
Centre back
Right back
Box to bogba
Striker

Thats's easily £150m right there assuming its Hummels, Clyne, Pogz  and someone we dont know yet.

So to get depay aswell when we have wide options like januzaj and di maria, i just can't see it. We rarely use wingers aswell.

I'd agree with your picks if we were sticking with the Diamond or the 3-5-2 but I don't Think we are.

Therefore I don't see the need for a new striker as Rooney, RvP and Wilson are more than enough for the lone striker spot and I think that we can manage for another season with Rafael and Valencia at RB.

Di maria and Januzaj aren't enough if we're going to use a formation with wingers consistantly.

Agree with you that we need a B-2-B and a CB though regardless of formation.

I just don't understand this logic. Yes, there is a chance he will be a flop. Nothing is 100%. But for €30M for a 21 year old player who has 20+ goals and assists for the second season in a row, and played very well in a world cup... in a time where we could use player of that type. feck it's a no-brainier, get him. Ronaldo was also a gamble at 18, and so was .. Jones, Obertan? Di Maria, Falcao and Veron kinda prove that even if we buy world class player it doesn't guarantee he will be perfect. And this guy is probably one of the two greatest talents in the dutch league at the moment.

Please no!!!!! Haha. I think we will sign clyne due to the fact he has one year left, a certain england first teamer and is still very young. £15-20m would be a bargain for him. I think we will give Nani another go next season too but would love to get Depay in if we will convert to 433 and in which case would agree we don't need another striker. Wouldn't mind Dybala though.

This. We need (at least) a forward with drive and ambition to go with the obvious talent. This lad fits the bill perfectly.

Couldn't disagree more, I haven't watched him once this season but I'm pretty sure all those goals have been flukes and he's been shite all season. Do not want, or something.

hopefully we are shifting towards 433, in which case we dont need to buy a striker. If we dont sign Falcao

it leaves us with

Rooney
RvP
Chicharito
Wilson

all for one spot as striker.

Signing Depay would be great as our wing choices would be

Januzaj,Di maria, Depay, Young, Nani For two spots. Sounds good to me

Yea, hopefully we see a shift to more 433 & 4231 types, Im a LvG fan but I dont think I could stomach watching another season of United without width, talented winger/outside forward types should be a priority along with a CB, RB & CM.
Anyway, Ive watched a few games of Depay this year, looks a prospect to me, I hope dearly we go in for him this summer.

Ya I don't see how Van Gaal can expect players to follow all his orders. The majority of footballers aren't known for their intelligence.

In what world is that a bargain for Clyne?

In a world where Shaw costs 30 million.

And Kolorov cost £16m, Lescott cost city a huge chunk because he was English too. I think £15m fee more realistic plus add ons, just to fend off potential competition. If there isn't any then think we could get him for £10m, but unlikely because of english tax.

Out of interest how much do you think it would cost to take Kyle Walker? Who i think doesn't look as good as Clyne.

It is always a folly to dismiss talent when evaluating them due to their level of competition. If they're better than all their competitors, then that's all they can do at the time.

Don't worry well have another 60 million or so as Pogba wont be coming back.

Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't they just signed a big money kit deal? And not to forget if they make top 4 ahead of us, that's another £40-60m plus the pull of CL football. The latter is obviously in hindsight, I do think Liverpool and Spurs will push us all the way for this fella.
