Understood, I just thought maybe you felt there was a better alternative as I do think some are getting carried away because he's Dutch and has history with LvG.
Nah, just wanted to see if there's something concrete about the whole thing. But it seems its that LVG dutch thing, yeah. :)

It's like the media learned nothing from the summer, they spent most of it linking us to every player in the Dutch WC squad while also claiming LvG didn't like South Americans, in the end we bought one player from the Dutch team and brought in 3 South Americans.

We probably wound up with the players we did because others weren't available. If left to his own devices, I'm pretty sure LvG would opt for mainly northern European players from Holland, Germany, and Belgium.

Yeah, we were linked with Vlaar too. THere are other dutch players too I cant remember.

De Vrij, Martins Inidi, Sneijder, Robben and *sh Udders* De Jong. By the end of the summer it was easier to list the players we hadn't been linked to from the Dutch squad.

That would be a good TL then.
We should avoid Strootman though.

I reckon there will be extra scrutiny before we buy him to avoid Ruud and Hargreaves type situations, but if he receives a 100% fitness assessment then I wouldn't doubt LvG would move forward.

As soon as I heard Blind links we got him.

As for Strootman I think it wasnt as strong as it was suggested, maybe LVG never was interested but people were talking about it cause he's dutch. :)
I'm taking this off topic a bit now but I don't think it was that clear cut with Blind. Otherwise why did we wait so long until making our move? Surely we could have got him earlier in the summer.

Why is he cut off the screen? I can't tell if he took that with his left or right foot. Either way it's terrible goalkeeping but Memphis is keeping his scoring stats up with nice consistency.

He took it with the instep of his right foot, on the big toe bone area. Ronaldo/Juninho style if you like.

A bit unfair to the keeper that. You don't see it as well in the clip above but his vision is obscured by the extra PSV players in the wall and the ball curls really dramatically. At first I thought that it took a deflection but you can see on other clips that it actually doesn't.

That's wha you've got to remember with the Dutch league or other smaller leagues the standard is terrible but from what I've seen Depay does have talent to make the step up.

Ed van Steijn, who scouted Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United, admits he is hugely impressed with PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay, and even prefers him over the Portuguese at the same stage in his career.

The Netherlands international has been strongly linked with following in Ronaldo's footsteps by moving to Old Trafford, although he did sign a new deal with PSV last summer to banish transfer speculation for this season at least.

Manchester United would be well served by Depay, Van Steijn clearly feels, rating the young winger even above Ronaldo at the same age.

Indeed, Van Steijn believes it took Ronaldo some time to eliminate mistakes from his game, while Depay is better formed.

"If I compare him to a young Cristiano Ronaldo at the time, then Depay has more strings to his bow. I like him better", the scout told Dutch daily theAlgemeen Dagblad.

Don't speak too soon. I remember reading a couple of days ago Italian media were saying we had signed De Jong on a pre-contract.

Yeah, in that video you can see how much it swerves from the angle behind Memphis.

Ugh, hopefully bullshit like most of the weekly rumours surrounding United, he's way past it and was never that good to start with, a limited, thug clogger.

After @NL Max posts and watching some videos (I know I know) I've decided Memphis is my muppet signing for the summer. He's everything we need.

I will second this for the same callow reasons. A goal threat from out wide is necessary if we play 4-3-3 and it would logically suit Mata if we play with a 10.

------Rooney-----
Depay--Mata-----
------------DiMaria
-----Herrera------
--------Blind------

Long-term, if we assume our front 3 is Rooney, Januzaj and another, Depay attacking from the left should suit Januzaj, who seems like he might be best narrow on the right moving around and linking up but still able to fade wide at times and just take on a fullback.

My number 1 signing for the summer (outside of the world superstar bracket) I think he's got the potential to be one of the best wingers/inside forwards in the world. This feels like a 'Hazard' moment, we need to sign him at any cost because no matter what we pay for him in the summer he will be worth double in 2-3 years.

I'm really confident of this deal going through, should United choose to pursue Memphis in the summer that is. Having Van Gaal as the manager is a massive advantage and the most blatantly obvious factor for that confidence, he's someone who was a father figure for Memphis in the Dutch squad and helped him progress from a raw debutant to a full term international. The fact that Depay stayed put at PSV for an extra season in part due to Van Gaal's professional advice speaks volumes about their mentor/ protege relationship. Plus, Woodward is the antithesis of Gill as a CEO. The primary reason for Hazard not joining United was Gill and Fergie's reluctance to indulge his agent. There are no such concerns with Woodward who's reportedly a lot less conservative when it comes to loosening the purse-strings. Additionally as an upcoming star, Memphis will align with Ed's player marketability philosophy.

"Now, it is claimed in France that mega-wealthy PSG are again eyeing his currently-unhappy situation at United." Some serious source there.

An information about PSG targeting Di Maria will probably come from France.

Yes, but it's a typical tabloid article with a misleading headline, no quotes and no specific source. So basically nothing new.

I definately think we're playing 433 or 4231 next season. Van Gaal always preferred this formation and we've seen that we're better with wingers than with 2 strikers. Memphis could be a great player for this, he's a goalscoring winger. Di Maria is an assist kind of winger.

Memphis - Rooney - Di Maria

Young/Lingard - RvP/Wilson - Januzaj

This is my guess for the front 3 next season and would give enough options.

That midfield is never going to happen though, the reason Mata isn't playing is because of Herrera and Blind. This would be far to lightweight for the premier league and LvG as he ALWAYS plays with 4 defensive minded players. In a 4231 this mean: the 2 centrebacks + 1 holding midfielder and the missing link is the box-to-box midfielder. Herrera has done well but he's not a defensive minded player for van Gaal. He already tried Rooney, Fellaini, Mata and now Herrera but he's going to buy a first team player for that spot as it's obvious he isn't happy with the options. Fellaini is now the 4th 'defensive minded' player as he at least offers some strenght and height, but LvG doesn't like to play his defensive minded player in the number 10 role (and Fellaini is not good enough as a BTB player).

What van Gaal wants in a midfield (and will always use, just like left-right foot combinations): 1 holding midfielder: Blind/Carrick, 1 creative midfielder as number 10: Herrera/Mata/Rooney/Di Maria. 1 box-to-box player who's good defensively and helps in attack: Fellaini/only this season: Herrera/Rooney. He needs a Strootman/Vidal/Mascherano to find his balance.

Mascherano is way too defensive for that number 8 box to box type.

Vidal would be perfect, but Strootman isn't that much better at it than Herrera. He's stronger, but not quite as quick. I think Herrera will tailor (and has already started) to tailor his game to what Van Gaal wants from an 8, and if we're good enough, we should be taking risks and picking aggressive, technically skilled offensively oriented players when possible. Look at Madrid and Bayern and who they line up, often picking one CM who is a brilliant passer (Kroos, Alonso) and using mobility and technique to dominate play elsewhere.

I don't think the difference between Strootman and Herrera with proper instructions is worth not playing Herrera as the 8. I do think we should sell Fellaini and buy a CM like Vidal and then can play 4-3-3 comfortable, survive an injury to Herrera or play with Herrera as a 10 in tougher games.

I'd be surprised if any player joins us before the end of the season. Who knows whether we'll be in the CL, EL or anything.
