Memphis Depay 2.0 as no. 9

Joao Felix.

A small loan fee but a much better option.

Agreed. Should be our main priority this transfer window, we paid 30m for kids who have hardly played for us, 16m for a young player who fits the manager's style of play after offloading Ronaldo's wages should be a no brainer, the guy could be the difference between EL and CL football next season. Enough with this Memphis none-sense he's shit and would just add to the rest of the dead wood we've piled up during the last decade.

I'm not too keen on him as our long-term solution. But he'd be our second best striker if he comes this january.

Whether he's accepting as a sub behind Martial, that's another issue.

I think the issue will be him wanting a longer contract as opposed to short term, United will see it as a stopgap, Memphis won't.
I agree with that - why would he want to leave for a 6 months stay with us? For him it would involve a higher risk for injuries etc than playing a reserve role at Barcelona, and an injury might mean he misses out on a lucrative next move in the summer as a free agent..

If he would say yes to 6 months as a stop gap/backup if Martial stays fit then fine - if he want a longer contract then stay clear.

Wouldn't it make sense to get both felix and depay on loan if possible? It's obvious we won't get more than a dozen more games out of martial before he's injured again.

Yes I would but it won't happen

As it stands right now, having carried a near-useless Ronaldo and having had our first choice CF missing for most of the season thus far, we're one point off 4th with a game in hand.

We might have wanted better than Depay in January but the idea that he cannot get us into a top four position we're already breaking into even while having had worse options is obviously histrionic nonsense.
You may want to take a look at our upcoming schedule after the World Cup. We are playing three times a week. It is impossible to play all those games without a reinforcement. Also, all our rivals are getting reinforcements so us not doing so (Depay is a joke, if we even get him) is like being in a Formula One race and skipping a pit stop. We will burn out. With all due respect, you are not even remotely realistic in your line of thinking.

We can just throw a 6-month loan deal with zero fee & covering all his wages, and see what Barca says. If they accept, not bad we got a versatile forward who matured a lot and has the desire to prove himself ; if not, just move on to structure other deals. We have lots of games ahead and no time to waste on bargaining.

Any long-term deal related to Depay should not be entertained. His 2nd journey in big clubs has failed so far, that speaks risk. Until he proves us in 6 month loan, we can talk more.

Loan Depay as back up to Martial (and Rashy) until the end of the season, no buy obligation. Seems like the best option for a team that has no money to buy

As a backup he'd be good, may even start over Martial. Just hope it's short term though.
a 6 month Ighalo style deal, how can it really hurt? we need more options and he isn't a bad player.

People need to stop turning their noses up when our selection is very limited.

People want Haaland type returns on a short term loan deal on a striker market is already very limited to purchase, let alone a striker that is a) good and b) available on a loan deal. Which ultimately brings our choices down to just a handful of players.

Yeah that guy just isn't human (damn why didn't we take gamble as a kid). Wish we could do two loan deals like Spurs this time last year but not take either permanently.

Luckhurst thinks we should get him

Ten Hag made the point were still in 4 competitions

If it’s on a free, seems a sensible move

It seems to me that there are a few differences from the last time that Depay was at United. He seems to have matured both as a player and as a person, which makes a major difference. I also think that ETH makes a difference. There is both a structure and some freedom within the structure. All that United would need from Depay is around 10 goals.

Yeah, contrary to what most people think. I don't think he has an ego on the pitch. He'd accept his position to fight for a place. Of all our past players in recent years, he's probably one that speaks highly of the club and realised that it was on him to do more.

He is awful.
The only possible positive is that Martial may not see him as competition, and usually he does better when there's no competition.

He is not a bad idea as a stop gap just for half a season. Get him on loan and them he will be free to go to any other club at the end of the season. He will be a good back up for Martial or other foward positions if one of them gets injured (Hope not). Them on the summer we will go for our main striker. Hopefully by them we already have new owners willing to invest in the squad

People see his tattoos and music and think he's a playboy. The reality seems quite different.

He also loves the club, he still wears United shirts casually even when he didn't play for us. For me that shows he would give his all.

He really isn't awful. It's not like we are asking him to be our main striker either, just rotation. Not many are going to come to the club on those terms.

Memphis has the ability, but I worry about him cracking again under the microscope that he'd be under going back to OT.

Getting the old gang back together, good times. Depay and Lukaku, classic 90s striker partnership. Get it done.

Get him on loan for the rest of the season. We need bodies up front and he seems to only half decent option out there.

With the right wage he would be a good option and when we buy a proper striker he can move to the bench. Wont get many subs as good as him in the market. He cant be worse than Ronaldo, Elanga and current Sancho

I would be happy with him tbh. Not easy to do business in January and he is a much better player now. Added bonus that he wants to show everyone he actually can cope with playing for us.

Memphis on a free sounds like excellent business. I think he’d come back on fire with a point to prove. His stats are impressive, the only thing holding him back is people hating on the name. If someone heard his stats and he was called Anton Flamingo they’d be all over it.

My main issue with us getting him wouldn’t even be related to him really. It’d be that I’d expect him to just about do well enough that we wouldn’t actually replace him after the initial short term period and I don’t think he and Martial are remotely good enough to get us where we want to go.

He joined Barca though. I just feel out of all the poor options we have, he remains the best one for a loan

I know there will be someone, but I can't think of a player that has gone back to a club for a second time, and it's worked out, after their first stint was a disaster.

Think it's sensible if 6 month loan deal. We are still in four competitions for the moment at least. Nothing to lose bar the opportunity cost of not getting someone else in on a short term 6 month deal, but who else is there? It's shop window time for Depay and he has a point to prove so the motivation will be there......double motivation.

Needs to happen immediately however as games coming thick and fast. The last time a striker came back to the club after Barca it worked out ok :smirk:

I'm not sure who else fits the criteria if easily acquired, not costing much, and fills the need. Seems about the best option.

Who wouldn't want a player called Anton Flamingo though?

Maybe he will re-sign, but all I've seen is a campaign from journalists for him to come back without any indication United actually wants him.

Any Dutch guys here know if Ten Hag has ever said anything on the record on Memphis?

Depay or Thuram seem the best attainable on the cheap options at the mo. I think either would serve us well for 6 months at the very least.

Tell me more about this Anton Flamingo chap, he sounds excellent.
