Memphis Depay 2.0 as no. 9

Andy mitten said I’m in September that Barcelona were willing to let Memphis leave on a free to get him off the wage bill

So it could be possible, but would Memphis want to leave Barcelona just to sit on United bench instead? Can’t see him starting the big matches ahead of a fit Martial

So he'd probably start some big matches then!

Nope, seriously would prefer we play the youth - at least it'll be a cheap flop and not an expensive hard-to-get-rid-of one

Heart says no, head was also saying no, now it's saying yes. We've got a huge 5 months ahead of us. Ridiculously tight top 4 fight/Europa League tie with Barcelona, getting to the latter stages of the domestic cups, potential ownership change etc. We want to be on the best footing possible for next summer/season and bringing in Memphis Depay as a rotational option with Martial is as good as we can realistically expect at this moment.

You'd imagine he'd really buy into the project, what with the unfinished business - ten Hag Dutch dynamic at play. Would he accept an 18 month contract, though? Seems risky from his point of view if he underwhelms or gets injured.

But this is the concern. How often can we reasonably expect to see a fit Martial? Especially if we are unable to rest him due to our lack of numbers.

It's why we need Depay/Felix in the first place. Increases our attacking numbers and offers more tactical variety with their ability to link up play and retain possession in advanced areas.

Martial blows pretty hot and cold and his injury record is patchy. I don't think Memphis Depay would think he was coming here as solid back up. I would suggest he would back himself to be more than that.

Whether he would be effective enough is a totally different argument I'll accept.

If it's a choice between him or nobody at all I say go for it.

What else do we have? Put Rashford in at CF? he's finally looking confident and productive again on the left.

Bruno as a false 9 isn't pretty and it's not like we are set up to play like that. Was Garnacho a striker at Athletico youth set up? Even if he was it's a hell of a responsibility at 18.

None of the u23 seem to be anywhere near that level. So not sure what the options are other than a less than ideal one.

If we are pinning hopes on Martial keeping form and staying fit until May, we are taking a hell of a gamble.

I've never been too keen on the idea of re-signing Depay but if we can get him on a free or low cost loan, I'd take him until the summer. The Joao Felix stuff sounds like a red herring to me, and I don't think there are (m)any other realistic signings we can make in January without spending big.

It's true. We need to make the best of a bad situation. Not compound the issue even further.
That's the key point. Situation is bad, but we can still do something that may improve our chances. So what can possibly be gained by doing nothing?

If money is tight now, imagine how the summer may go if we miss out on top 4, and the Glazers haven't yet managed to sell the club.

If we don't have new owners in the summer, the only possible way we are getting any transfer money out of the Glazers is by securing CL qualification and the money that comes with it.

If we do end up going for him really hope it's a 6 month loan. Hopefully that will push him to work harder too, will get a lot of games, starting and as a sub.

I feel he's the best "Short-Term" option available right now.

I don’t think he’s very good but another warm body would be decent. Couldn’t wrap my head around people thinking he was world class when he was leaving Lyon.

There has got to be someone else, it's not just between Felix and Depay surely.
We saw in the summer that the press don't have a clue on our transfer business. Most likely we'll go for someone that hasn't been mentioned yet if we sign anyone at all with the lack of funds.

Glazers got us the cheapest scraps nobody else wanted. Because that is who they are.

They can go feck themselves and I cannot wait those dumb pieces of crap to get out of our club. Sick to my stomach. They are throwing another season away.

I agree. Just something to tie us over till the summer. Hopefully by then the takeover will have been done.
And we would have missed the UCL spot AGAIN. Which means we will have problems signing top talent in the summer, again. Depay cannot get us over to top 4, with the current level of competition in EPL.

Then who do we go and get that is both realistically & financially currently available right now because at this moment in time I don’t know who is?

He looked decent a couple of years ago, but has had a very bad year. His Barca move has flopped.
Still better than nothing.

Arsenal got rid of a senior goalscorer last summer who was acting the twat behind the scenes, decided to wait for the right player and didn’t replace him in January, missed out on top 4, got their replacement in the summer and are now top. Missing out on top 4 AGAIN didn’t seem to do them any harm. Making the wrong panic signing that restricts what you can do in the summer is the worst case scenario. We need either the right long-term player now or a 6 month option who can contribute.

Gakpo, Gakpo was available but our moronic owners wouldnt pay up. I am sure there are others but none of then are as cheap as Memphis fecking Depay, so here we are

We could have had him for free last summer and now Barca want a fee for him? We need to do better.

The worst case scenario is not finishing top 4 and not having new owners in place by summer.

That would certainly restrict what we could do in the summer far more than signing a player who doesn't tick all the boxes, in my view.

2nd highest Netherlands goal scorer isn’t a bad stat.

If he comes in hopefully can do the business and score some very important goals. Ideally we need 2 strikers but we’ll be lucky to get 1 at this point.

Definitely won't get two

Would love to see an established name who is dirt cheap/loan deal out of nowhere feeling like they have something to prove

As it stands right now, having carried a near-useless Ronaldo and having had our first choice CF missing for most of the season thus far, we're one point off 4th with a game in hand.

We might have wanted better than Depay in January but the idea that he cannot get us into a top four position we're already breaking into even while having had worse options is obviously histrionic nonsense.

I think Depay makes far too much sense so we'll probably not go for him. Could be the prefect stop gap before getting a serious first choice striker in the summer, lets be honest top quality strikers aren't in abundance and certainly won't be in January.

Bang average at the absolute best, still can't believe people want him back after watching him literally only perform for mid tier sides like PSV and Lyon.

I don't think we could sign anyone usable up front this winter, so I am not totally against taking him back on loan.

Last season in La Liga he averaged 0.39 goals per 90 across 28 appearances.

That's not great. But it is better than the rate of our current top scorer in this league season (0.37). And crucially a lot better than the player he'd actually be replacing managed this season (0.17), who also actively hindered us in general play.

Given the hard ceiling on expectations when you're looking at short-term or loan deals, that's fine.

I don't really rate Memphis, but as a stop gap option he's fine. We need reinforcements up front. I don't believe in Marital at all, but the drop off behind him is steep.

Yeah my thoughts on the situation too

He's not as bad as some are making out, in fact he's not a bad player at all. At Barca he had his moments and he's matured a lot, Lyon is probably his level though.

He'll be allowed to leave on a free, no loans.

I think the issue will be him wanting a longer contract as opposed to short term, United will see it as a stopgap, Memphis won't.

Neither is signing no-one. So, considering we are skint, who would you suggest that would currently be a better option than Depay, is available on loan and would not require a loan fee?

Joao Felix.

A small loan fee but a much better option.
