That's not the point. I never said that he wouldn't get a chance to play. He has a higher chance of getting paid more if he goes from one big team to another instead of sticking with Barca for the rest of his life and that's why Raiola has been trying to convince him for us.
he would get plenty of play time at those clubs, so the only thing we can offer is extra money.

And to be honest we've been signings
so many money grabbers lately and it's one of the reasons we are in this state

I can see you definitely wouldn’t. Can only hope that DeLigt is a bit more of an imaginative, optimistic person!

OK.

I'm sure a 19 year old, Dutch player raised in an era where we've been, on average, the 5th or 6th best team in England would sign for us because of our history of *being* a top team. I'm not saying signing he can't or won't sign for us but I doubt "well, we used to be a force in England even though we're a bit of a circus right now" is going to sway him. Money will be the factor.

I don’t think it was realistic he’d sign for us anyway with Barcelona interested, but if City are getting involved we have no chance.

Or look at the positive side -
His formative years for really liking a team outside Holland we're probably around the age 9 or 10. Just about the period when United were this wonderful attacking trio of Rooney, Ronaldo and Saha/Tevez and defensive masterclass that was anchored by none other than Edwin. The years when we made three CL finals in four years.

Could definitely have left an impression

Think he could be someone who moves relatively late in the window. He might wait and see how squads are looking and how the promises made to him are panning out.

As someone that has grown up watching United, 22 years old now, 2004 onwards are my first real United memories and I only remember Ruud vaguely, so would be surprising if De Ligt does.

Yes and I take that onboard but bare in mind overmars and VDS are both there. I’m sure that they’ve spun many stories about living and playing in England and in sure VDS has only good things to say about United. That goes a long way

Quite sure VDS would advise his best talents to go where they're guaranteed to push for titles and play Champions League football though.

Ok I’m gonna stop here because it’s clear you’ve cut all your minds off to even the remotest chance.

All I’m saying is that stranger things have happened and if you’re not in you can’t win

De ligt would be the best player we could sign if his agent wasn't the snake. We should stay clear of any players that are represented by Mino Raiola .

I'm in. Offer him 20 million a year and he can go after three.

The chance to lead Manchester United back to the glory days? One of football's most storied clubs? What young player who wasn't an out-and-out mercenary would turn his nose up at that? United is still a great draw for players and if we had a board made up of football men I'd say we would stand a good a chance as any of signing him. It's the Woodward factor that bothers me with his focus of monetizing everything.

If we have a real chance at this we should move heaven and earth to do it. It would be a statement of real intent and help us in selling the 'project' to other players we are talking to e.g. Sancho, that we are on the way back and these players can be the ones to get us back to the top.

Offer him good money and the captaincy as a sweetener, with the promise of further investment.

That being said he'll go Barca or City.

Anyone who's watched a bit of TV knows we play the least attractive football of the top 6 in England and have a team in disarray.

If Barca came in for him there is no way he'd choose us.

Sadly he would probably also join liverpool ahead of us, VVD link and so on.

When he speaks to national compatriots Blind and Depay and then tell him that Man Utd treated them poorly do you think it will inspire him?

Would Blind or Depay really say we've treated them poorly?

I can understand the current negativity surrounding United but we are still one of the biggest clubs in the world with great history and probably future as well due to our financial might, big players also have big egos if we can sell the Idea of leading our great club revival to these young guns we do have a chance to sign them.

The domino effect is what United should be aiming for this Summer. Blow everyone out of the water for Felix, use that to show Sancho our intention to have the most exciting young squad in Europe, use that for De Ligt etc etc.

This Summer is special because of the players available, it’d be a huge outlay as we would have to offer fees that no other club will match but it could set us up for a decade. Didn’t do PSG or City any harm when they started squad building.

Felix and Sancho alone would cost about 200m. Not going to happen. Ole wants 5-6 new signings not 2-3.

Players have never really turned down Barca for United.

Even going back to Ronaldinho when Barca weren't what they are now and we were closer to our 90's peak.

As we're going to be in the Europa and Barca contend for the league and champions league each season. Plus they just signed his teammate. And you can live in Spain.

“We can do things in the market that others can only dream about”

That’ll be tested this year, these 3 would cost close to 300m but over the next 8 years it’d look like next to nothing.

For what it’s worth I also don’t expect it to happen but if the likes of Liverpool can spend as big as they did on VVD and Becker, we’ll remain behind for years ans years if we think we can spend 200m on 6 players and bridge the gap.

Sure I love the optimism here that we can pitch him the idea that he can lead the club back to glory but his already been through that with Ajax and he was a few minutes away from tasting CL finals.

So wherever he will go next he’ll want to go where it’s stable and can win now. I’m not sure he’d want to come here and play through a possible 2-3 year rebuild.

If Barca can’t get him then surely City is in the running now with Kompany leaving. The only way we could get him is to offer him whatever contract he and his agents want, which we know Ed can do.

This is the problem we now have. The only thing we can offer is money and the name of the club, which isn’t hugely valuable if you’re not competing. So he’s got tons of leverage if we were to bid, we have to pay through the nose, and we then have the Sanchez problem all over again.

I’m sorry for the state of this club but we’re going to have to watch City and Barca fight it out for him. Though for me it seems like the sort of thing City will just randomly announce out of the blue one day.

I don't think it would be crazy money. However, Pep and Raiola don't really see eye to eye. So I highly doubt he'll go to City. But then again, it's not impossible. Stones and Laporte are still the future of City... Not sure if De Ligt is willing to sit the odd game out.

Don’t know about Blind, but Depay has become a mad United fan and apparently would love to come back

Raiola can be the only reason why we would sign him. Barca is Barca, City offer you titles and domination in PL, i will not talk what Liverpool offer you because it is sad time when Liverpool is better destination for player than United. So he will be mad to join us. But that is why Raiola is only (small) chance. He likes money

I agree, we must spend big on the best talents around. Hope the board agrees as well.

You’re all forgetting that both City & PSG managed to sign superstars when they were shite. Money + project means alot to players, add the name Manchester United to that and offer fees to clubs that no-one else will be prepared to match and you can get almost anyone. None of these players need Sanchez wages, they just need better than other offers and if United are the highest bidder, it takes a hell of a fuss for a player to reject his current club’s wishes of their preferred buyer.*

*Di Maria proved that point for us, Michael Owen to Newcastle also.

Caf transfer forum posters: ‘No player will come to Man Utd right now, and if they did it’d only be for money and they wouldn’t be motivated to play.’*

*ignores the last couple decades somehow...

Because we are having problems even convincing that James lad from Swansea, a Championship club to come join us? Why has no deal been announced by now? Real has less of job to do compared to us and yet they have announced Militao and Jovic already. Even Chelsea, a club banned from transfer has the better sense and wrap up Pulisic already. Us? Even the DOF position Ed PROMISED us that we'd employ one properly before we have a permanent manager is nowhere to be seen. How can you expect us to believe in our club when we have been fed empty promises all these years?

And if us fans feel that way, imagine the professional players in the business? How would they want to come to a club not only disarray but also have developed a habit of lying to their own fans? How can they trust a project pitched by people who are well-known for empty promises?

Because we are having problems even convincing that James lad from Swansea

Are we? Work at the club on the transfer committee do we?

None of us have idea if we’re actually even in for James or if Swamsea/his agent are using our name to bump up his price. If we are interested, it might be a second or third choice, nothing we even want to get over the line until we’ve explored the other options.

Or in short, stop talking rubbish.
