This saga is reminding me of Pogba being nailed on for Madrid... and then....

Let's hope Edwin is helping us out on this one (same as Ziyech). We aren't in the best shape at the moment but he would come in and have a good chance at being captain within a few seasons.

Cant help but feel our name is just being thrown out there for clicks and/or even if we are involved we'd be right down on the players list of preferred clubs and ultimately would be another Di Maria

Even if we pulled the signing off I'd have my doubts the player would really want to be here

It does seem like it's Barca number 1, but if they won't pay the money he will look elsewhere.

I think De Ligt seems professional enough though that he would give it his best, and i'm sure he'd fall in love with the club like everybody else.

Lets be honest though right now we aren't top of the tree.

That's what always concerns me about players of this calibre now. Hopefully we sign 3/4 players that he can actually work with rather than Jones, Young, Matic etc.

It's very unlikely that we'll sign him but it's good we're trying our best to sign him. Such a massive statement of intent.

I honestly don’t think Barca can afford to sign both him and Greasyman unless someone lowers their demands

Still in with a slim chance lads

Agreed. It's a very long shot but this guy, more than anyone, more than Neymar, Mbappé, more than Messi, would be the statement of intent for where we should be going.

They can't without taking a huge loan or selling 2/3 players like Coutinho/Dembele for a loss.

I don't think they'll go for Griezmann in the end, seems a bit pointless and is just adding a name for the sake of it. He and Messi play in the same areas.

I’m not sure who will get him but surely he would have wrapped the move to Barce up by now if it was that nailed on.

Sounds like another team (hopefully us) have offered him a big contract.

The optimist in me is feeling confident that he's coming to us. If it was Barca, the deal would've been done or atleast no other teams would have been linked with him.

Yes like the De Jong transfer

The biggest difference is Di Maria got forced out of Madrid and wanted a PSG move before United. But he actually wanted to stay. De Ligt goes because he wants to and i am sure he has at least 2-3 other clubs to choose from. If he chooses us, great. I dont see the similarities. He is not forced to move here

I know what you mean. They’ve already spent £70mil on De Jong. AG will cost them about £105mil so if they were to sign De Ligt as well that would bring expenditure to circa £250mil with a massive wage increase to boot. Where is it all coming from?

They will sell Coutinho, Malcom and Umtiti. Likely take out a loan too

We ain't his first choice but let's be real, was city the the top choice for many players back in the days?

If you offer a clear plan, have a philosophy in place and offer a boatload of money, you'll attract good players.
Sadly enough, we only offer a boatload of money :wenger:

I won't get my hopes up but I'd be delighted to sign him.

Supporting his pal Ole no doubt. He doesn't know anything about who we are targeting.

De Ligt already has a massive ego and perception of his own qualities. Raiola is his agent and already would have informed him of what Pogba has been through. There is zero chance of him coming to United especially when we have no CL and he has his pick of clubs. Seems like too many are basing their hopes on the Telegraph article which was a totally shameless leak by Raiola using us to get to Barca.

All this "He hasn't decided/agreed with Barca" is very similar to Raiola's repeated statements of "Pogba hasn't made a deal with any club" during the time he signed for us.

to who, exactly? what price are they expecting?

No idea on price, with Umtiti wouldn't be surprised if we were in for him along with Arsenal

Coutinho no idea, but it seems clear they want to sell him.

There has also been rumours of selling Rakitic

They're not going to get anywhere near the number they need, and their wage bill will likely increase dramatically too. I've not seen any recent figures, but if I remember rightly their wages already accounted for over 80% of their income. When loan repayments are added on top of that, how is it in any way sustainable?

If Ed gets this done he is very much forgiven, or at least on the mend. But he is going to Barca cant see it not happening.

I may look really stupid if anyone reads this back in 2024 and De Ligt is captain of a Barcelona side who’ve just won the treble...

... But as of May 2019, I’ve got a feeling that De Ligt won’t make it.

Umtiti is possibly crocked (sadly), Coutinho is an overpaid flop and Rakitic is what 31 or 32 ?

It’s all well and good wanting to sell a player, but you need a buyer who’s willing to pony up the cash.

It's one of those transfers that are simply too good (for us) to be happen. I wouldn't mind us throwing an obscene amount for him even if that meant the rest of the transfers are some "unknown" young talents.

I am firmly of the opinion that the only way we can get back to where we were is believing in youth and giving them time now. Just create in, 2-3 transfer windows, a team of young 18-26 year old players fitting our attacking style (which ever we choose) and let them gel. De Ligt would be the base of all this and our captain for the future. If we decide to do this we would become a really interesting destination for every hungry young player out there, I mean who wouldn't want to be a part of a potential future dynasty playing for one of the biggest and most supported club in the world with guaranteed game time. It's just up to the board to see and acknowledge that we as fans would feking LOVE to see progress year in year out built on youth and fast attacking football, we are a big club and all that, but in order for TOP targets to work or even want to come we need an iron hard spine already there. De Light btw isn't a necessity, we should be doing this either way.

Its all well and good Spanish clubs thinking they can take advantage of EPL clubs wealth but the downside is that every player outside of the elite is attainable for them. Maybe back in the day a non United side would sign Malcolm since it would be he versus a winger from Greece but nobody has a need to overpay for a name just because they're from Barca etc.
Add in the talent that's coming through and the EPL get out clause for foreign clubs flops is waning. Its why Madrid cant find a home for James or Bale in 2019.

Wasn’t DeJong heavily linked with PSG before it was annouced?

not just linked, he was incredibly close to signing with PSG before Barca came through with a like €15m higher bid last-minute, less than a week before the transfer was announced. De Jong talked about how he had to call up Maxwell (who'd been working on PSG's behalf) to personally apologise for the move falling through so last minute

Oh wow, totally missed this, I thought he was nailed on for Barca from the beginning

Thats interesting

This guy and Lindelof would be a great partnership. Bring back Tuanzebe and along with Smalling, that's a cracking mix of CBs imo.
