He's going to Barca unfortunately. We should've snapped him up in January. The fact that VDS is their President would've made getting him a bit easier. Unfortunately we gave new contracts to Jones and Smalling. It's the whole "having a English/British core at Manchester United" fable. It is ridiculous.
Nothing to do with it in this case. I think we discreetly asked VDS about him and we’ve been told he’s not interested. He wants Barca.
Otherwise surely there’d be strong sources about united interest - but there just isn’t

Ps re British players, we have to comply with regulations can’t just sell them all!

This fecking kid... someone said we need to buy a captain. Well here he is Ed, a 19 year old enormously talented captain.
De Ligt is captain material
Dean Henderson is captain material if he becomes good enough

Certain players have this dominant personality and you can tell right away. Rafael had it too when on the pitch.

I agree re Hendo, not so sure about Rafa, but I loved his passion and fire. He was one of my favorite players.

One of the biggest problems we currently have is the lack of proper leadership in the team.

Could we not approach via Van Der Sar? I'm sure he'd recommend the club to de Ligt.

He’s an absolute ‘sign at all costs’. If he’s not sure about joining, this is where we need people to sell the vision of the club moving forward.

I’m genuinely worried that Liverpool get him and have the best CB partnership in the world.. I could accept him going to Barca.

Can’t see them going for him - they have Gomez who looked promising before injury

Seriously? The reason they are streets ahead of us is they are relentlessly making signing that improve them.

De light improved them for the next 5-10 years, they will be doing all they can to get him.

This thread is going to be mega once he signs for Liverpool.

I'm not saying they won't - I just don't see it as a priority for them when they have Gomez to come back. I'd imagine they'd be more bothered about their midfield.

A CB partner for Van Dijk is literally one of only 2 positions where we could strenghten our first XI. GK, RB, CB, LB, CDM and our 3 attacking positions are sorted for next year. That leaves 2 midfield positions, one of which we need to buy a player for, and the CB partner for Van Dijk.

If we buy one midfielder, we still have Henderson, Wijnaldum, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Milner (if he stays) to compete for 1 free spot, that's more than enough quality.

Would be a great signing, but we are lacking in what we can offer him at the moment besides $$$.
Old Trafford
The United shirt
The project of being a key figure in the rebirth of a giant

You look for players who are inspired by those things, like Klopp was with Liverpool's pitch.

Old Trafford isn't that special anymore I'd say. Great stadium of course but getting a but outdated compared to rivals.

He's already done the key figure in the rebirth of a giant bit with Ajax.

Would sign De ligt and Maguire, play in a 3 with lindelof..and get two fit quality attacking wingbacks who can cross a ball

But going by some LFC fans logic, why do you need to sign a CM when you’ve signed Keita and Fabinho? And Wijnaldum not too long ago.

Remember this being brandished around a lot by rival fans when Jose wanted another CB after buying Lindelof and Bailly.

So you'd sign the hottest defender in world football, as well as arguably England's best CB, and two more players in positions we've struggled to fill for years? Someone should tell Woody that's all we need to do...

That's assuming you start next season with both Mane and Salah still at the club.

100% so. Both have expressed their desire to stay, both would cost in excess of €150m and who would buy them? Real has other targets, Barça can't afford him and no other team would be a step up in their career unless they'd want to join Juventus or PSG to chase meaningless league titles.

Totally forgot about Keita  Like I said, Fabinho should be nailed on starter at CDM next year if available. We need a CAM in the mould of Fékir added to our midfield, and then let the other five players or so battle it out for the last starting spot.

The one thing we need to NOT do this summer is be complacent and think our squad is good enough. We don't need much, granted, but a few shrewd additions are still necessary.

I don't think anyone is fully aware yet of what Reals targets are. There's a major rebuild coming there this summer and I doubt any club is safe from their claws right now.

Possibly - I'm not worried though. They'll go after Hazard first and firemost and he'll cost close to €100m, then Jovic for around €70m. They'd be seriously neglecting their midfield and defence if they only invest in three attackers, because I don't think there'd be much room left, even at Madrid, if they spend €100m, €70 and then €150+ on Mané/Salah.

I reckon if Madrid came pushing for Mane his head would turn and he'd end up going for £80-90mil.

I’d love us to sign him but I don’t see any way that he would want to come to us unless he’s a Utd fan. Even then, it’d be a heart over head decision.
Let’s face it, he’s much more suited to Barca, City or Liverpool who play the sort of football where he would slot right in - hell I’d argue that staying at Ajax would be a better move than coming to Utd.

Hope we can convince him but if I were in his shoes, I’d need a hell of a lot of convincing!

It isn't about the infrastructure and the looks of the stadium....

It's about the symbolism. And money.

If we are willing to pay 60-70 mill for Maguire or 100+ mill on Koulibaly, we should be in the race for De Ligt first. If we are throwing around that kind of money this summer, I actually think we have a decent chance of signing De Ligt. Throw 80 mill at Ajax, offer De Ligt solid wages (150-200 k/week) and give them a week to respond. Best case we land a fantastic early signing, worst case we can move on to Koulibaly.

Barcelona signed Frenkie de Jong some time ago, and they would have signed De Ligt by now if they see him as a priority signing and the negotiations with Ajax and the player went smoothly. Barcelona doesn’t have the strongest economy and have paid stupid money on Dembele and Coutinho recently, as well as Frenkie and probably Friezmann this transfer window. I don’t think they can afford to buy all of them without some major sales, and this might allow us to sign De Ligt this summer.

Telegraph, don’t do this to me. My muppet heart can’t take it. He fits all the requirements we need for a CB, is probably the best player in his age group, at a club we can buy from, so no doubt we probably aren’t even looking.

He’s the CB equivalent of Mbappe.

If there is a chance to sign him, then it is a no brainer, would be happy blow the beans on him and Maguire, can always use Maguire as DM/ box to box, the guy does like a forward run

£££, offer him a lot more than what Barca are offering.

That normally work.

Also whilst not quite at Barca/Milan level, we’ve had our share of Dutch superstars, so that should help

Keep calm lads, United is being used by his agent, so Barca up their offer. Why would he join United ahead of Barcelona.. No chance.

I’d do silly things to myself if we managed to pull it off. Pun intended.
