Matthijs de Ligt | Red Devil

Not true. Got to CL QF with Arsenal last year and Euro SF with France (who had a very good defensive record throughout tournament), as a starter. Not a huge sample size but he’s also been part of the best defense in the league. He’s only established himself recently but seems supremely talented and strong physically as well.
I just don’t consider Euros a top, top tournament at this stage. With Italy as poor as they are, and France/Germany noticeably weaker than they were 5-10 years ago, it just isn’t the same as WC or Copa. It’s definitely something though.

It’s a much stronger competition than Copa for sure. 6/8 of the last WC semi finalists were from Europe, only Argentina from South America.

It’s just what I said about Martinez though, impossible to have a reasonable discussion here. You are not even allowed to question he is a top 5 defender because people will jump on you.

I can see that happening but we'd need Yoro for that to work well. If Martínez is playing left-back, it's likely that we switch to a back 3 in possession where De Ligt is deployed as the CCB, because of his leadership, organizer and communication skills, and due to the fact that he's too slow to be a wide defender and can easily get done 1v1 in the channels against any pacey attacker in a high line, so that should be a no go. Yoro is the only defender we have IMO that's perfect for this.

So it would be Martínez-De Ligt-Yoro in a back 3 in possession, with Dalot/Mazraoui inverting into the midfield next to Casemiro/whoever plays DM.

This would be a great trio to have in possession and for the high line, and also with Dalot/Mazraoui a great quartet for deep, box defending. The only two issues I see with it is Martínez as a wide defender wouldn't be as fast and athletic as you would ideally like, and would also be probably better at CCB so that he has more and better angles for his line breaking passes...but then De Ligt has to be deployed as a wide defender which won't end well.

It will be very interesting to see how our defense is set up both in and out of possession, and whether we add Branthwaite to the team next year, because he would be great as an LCB/LB/wide defender in a back 3 type, but then we'll have 4 quality CBs and it will be difficult to keep them all happy, although usually we have at least a few injuries so maybe actually more depth is actually needed.
Yeah we have very very good options right now. Which should make us all happy. Hopefully a speedy recovery for Yoro.

Just out of interest, and maybe this is hard to prove/disprove, but is there overwhelming evidence of MDL been susceptible to a high line? As in covering out wide as well? I recall a video of him “keeping up” with Mbappe (I know, sometimes videos don’t tell the full story etc)…I’m just genuinely curious, and I guess at the end of the day it’s more of a team structure/unit structure versus an individual. That’s the whole being greater then the sum of its parts etc.

Yet he never lost the dressing room and the youngsters speak glowingly of him even after finishing 8th.

Carry on with your "slightly facetious posting".

Wanting the manager to fail
Where in the post did I say I want him to fail? I want the team to win and by extension, that means the manager too.

Whether he actually will do well is another question entirely and Ten Hag has an enormous job on if he wants to turn around what was a pretty fecking dire season last year. The majority of the dressing room are players he's signed himself or promoted from the academy so there was never likely to be a revolt against him, but that's kind of immaterial if the club's standards aren't being upheld.

We've persisted with the manager through some really awful football and results so the onus is on him now to deliver. It's his 3rd season in charge of United. If there isn't a dramatic change in what we've seen so far, he needs to go. I don't believe he can do it but I hope he proves me wrong.

I wasn't considering a QF as "deep" to be honest but forgot about the Euros. For the record I'm not disagreeing, just think that's a strange arbitrary rule to rate players by.

VVD
Saliba
Rudiger
Dias

Think that 5th spot could be any one of: Romero, Martinez, Militao, Marquinhos

I'd say his "slowness" and lack of mobility is probably overexaggerated, but at the same time I think putting him in those situations is just hanging him out to dry, basically. Ideally, with every footballer, I think you need to maximize their strengths and mask their weaknesses as well as you can.

there is no chance he's slower and less mobile than varane, evans or maguire

I see what you did there!

Anyone else think it's kind of insane that we got deligt and Yoro? These are the signings people keep telling me Manchester United cannot make anymore. In all honesty it's a good sign for Ineos.

If (as we hope) this gives us a platform at the back FINALLY maybe we can work up top too. I never forgot - it might have been the Europa league final Vs Sevilla how insanely hard we had to work for a goal, but how easy it seemed to get past us when our level dropped a tiny bit

The other issue is having Martínez-De Ligt-Yoro fit at the same time.

Yeah, I hear ya. I think having the team also playing more compressed and having a mobile DM ahead of them will also help with all the above and prevent those situations happening as well. Still, very happy with the quality of the signing.

Very impressed by the way he talks in that interview. I think he will be a real asset to this team.

To become successful, you need a well functional team with right system.
Roy Keane couldn't save Forrest on his own OR Debruyne cant win tittles on his own at city.

I believe we are finally going in right direction by bringing in technical players who can add right balance to the team and enhance other players ability.

Right foundations are being laid now, Looking forward to see well organised/progressive style new UTD which is the key for years of success to come.

You can see in that interview why Bayern fans adored him after only two seasons there. Future captain material with room to grow. Could turn out to be a real bargain.

He's much better on the ball than Varane, much quicker on the turn than Maguire and much better in the air than Martinez. Overall, he's a very solid defender and a good fit with our other options.

so is a tank.....watching maguire try to turn and run is like sands in the hour glass

I'm certainly optimistic that he's going to be a good fit .....you know he'll be good with the ball and he has size to win headers. Pace is my one concern.

This clip basically is what De Ligt is about. Being able to remain in full control against a player like Mbappe. Sure he's slower, but he was in full control of the ball afterwards. If he really was slow, he would've gone for a tackle and most likely fail. He know he would be fast enough to keep control of the ball and thus he never panicked.

He's not rapid like, for example, Yoro, but he's fast enough for us to play a high line (if Ten Hag wants to - and he should).

Mbappe was eating up that gap at a very high rate tbh...
But it at least shows hes faster than the CBs we had last season
Watch closely, De Ligt was boxing him in and trying to be at the right speed to control the ball. He wasn't going all out, because he knew how fast he should be to come out of this situation with the ball. De Ligt is basically Gandalf.

“A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.”

This is basically how De Ligt plays, it's all about anticipation and timing with him.

Yeah if that was supposed to prove he's quick it didn't work.

Yeah that's fair enough, he defended that situation very well.
Like I said, it shows he has enough pace if he defends intelligently.

Sprints generally won't be much longer than that though. Sure, Mbappé would have been ahead if there were 10m more, but there wasn't because of De Ligt's positioning; and if there were, he would have ended up pretty far down the pitch.
