Matteo Darmian

I think we will be after Fabinho and if we get one Monaco player, I doubt we will get a 2nd in the same window.
Good point.

I did a google search and it says Mendy was signed as a RB. Though papers are often wrong.

I like the look of Tierney and Semedo but not sure we will have the money for both. And do wonder like some if Jose wants two attacking full backs. But maybe with the right CBs and DM that won't be an issue.

I sense we may wind up with Semedo, who seems like a hybrid version of Nani and Valencia circa 2010.

Wouldn't surprise me if Mourinho goes after Walker. Fast, strong, reliable on both ends EPL proven RB.

Really hard to tell if there is any truth in portuguese rumours. Hardly an urgent priority, if he can wait a year it might be better. Silly prices being asked for. And afaik Semedo is only a right back, no? Not plsyed on the left too?

He is versatile enough to play on both sides.

You keep him until all other areas of needs are addressed. Next summer we can see what upgrades are available.

I think left backs and right backs should be the least of our concerns this coming summer. We've got to get a new CB, CM/ DM, ST, AM/SS and possibly a GK if De Gea leaves.

Smalling and Jones have simply got to go. What's more despicable is when Smalling puts on the captain's armband. Axel Tuanzebe is more than capable to fill in when required.

Especially with Tuanzebe performing well today.

We need to buy a proper LB that can defend and attack. Darmian can stay and cover at LB or RB, but i dont really care all that much, since we got Shaw at LB and Tuanzebe/Mensa to cover RB. We can sell him for 10m - 15m to Inter or AC Milan and be done with it

Did well on the defensive side in recent weeks but definitely a player we should be looking to upgrade on, which lets be honest shouldn't be hard or that expensive.

Not an urgent issue, Keep him as squad player until we find a good better replacement.

But first try to replace Jones, and then perhaps Smalling.

Darmian is still useful, capable in playing okay across all four defensive positions, perfect for covering and defensive FB.

Especially with Tuanzebe performing well today.

It was one performance so let's not get carried away. Also if we want to get the best out of him then we should be playing him as a CB. We don't want another Jones/Smalling situation.

Defensively he was solid today. But there was no threat down the right side today. Valencia was badly missed today because he's our only current fullback who can go up and down constantly.

Nobody is getting carried away. He performed well today, that's all.

I'd like to have seen him in an attacking sense. Don't think it was his fault that he didn't get forward though, more to do with our game plan than any sign that he can't attack in the same way as Valencia.

If he is limited going forward then given the modern day obsession with attacking full backs perhaps centre back is a better position from him.

Was solid over the last few games but if he stays, we need more going forward than he offers....

I think its more or less Jose's instructions to keep one fullback anchored to the defense in big matches and he mostly plays those fixtures anyways because Jose trusts him more than Shaw to carry out the game plan.

Probably true, so we'll have to look elsewhere for a new first choice LB, but one way or another we need one, the chopping and changing there all season isn't a good thing.

Wouldn't argue with that....

Selling him would be nonsense. Solid player on both sides. We were lucky that Valencia did not have too many injuries. Otherwise we would have needed him even more.

Rubbish. He hasn't been "solid" for a good 75% of his United career and the time for full backs who can only defend has long passed. I was excited when we got him at such a low price, but in this case we got what we paid for.

It's a strange one for me, Darmian. I don't think we'd particularly miss him if he left, but I wouldn't be making it a priority to move him on in the summer either.

He and Gary Neville should get together sometime, they could form a real bond. Both fullbacks, both played/play for Utd. They could form quite the duo; Gaz could be the questionable moustache to Darmian's unjustifiable pubescent beard.

I think he's a solid defensive player who's underrated on here, but if we sell him for a decent fee and go with Shaw and a new LB on that side (with Blind and/or Rojo able to play a game if crisis arises) and Valencia backed up by Young (offense) and Tuanzebe (defence) next year I wouldn't really bet on it hurting us.

I'm guessing he wants first team football with the WC next year. It's likely he'll move on.

I wouldn't really want to see him leave to be honest. I think he's a strong enough defender and on his day can be a brilliant asset at the back. He's not an attacking full back and I think that can be OK for some games and in some systems we employ.

Obviously, when trying to break down stubborn defences, he's not the man for us as he's not going to break forward and cause their defence to panic like the best attacking full backs. But I just don't think we should be as hasty to get rid of a versatile player that can work on both sides of the defence and do a job if asked.

One stumbling block is we're coming into a world cup year and would he be happy as a versatile squad player?

I think he stays. He's just starting to grow into his role and is getting more and more minutes. I also think Mourinho rates him.

I think his recent improvement is down to Mourinho. He has always been able to get the best out of his defenders. Had high hopes for Darmian when he signed but I wont be sad to see the back of him

I remember being excited when he signed. Thought he'd be our starting RB for years to come after the disappointment of Rafael being sold. He played LWB against England and I liked how he got forward in that game. Like others have said, it's coming to a WC season and no doubt he'll want regular games. He's valuable to have around but I could see us easily getting by without him.

Wages are a lot lower in Italy outside of Juventus and some of the players at Roma, Inter and Milan. They would need to have him as a priority signing for him to earn anything like his current United salary. The general trend in Italy has been for wages to decline at Milan and Inter, as they adapt to the new financial reality. I believe his Torino salary was 0.5m euros (after tax) according to the salary data listed in Gazzetta Dello Sport.

I changed my tune on him. I'd like to see him stay as a squad player.

I don't think we'd try to sell him, but we'd let him go without a fuss if he wants to leave. So if it's his choice, with a view to play in the WC, then he'll have to accept a lower salary in Italy. I reckon it's down to him.

He's definitely a good squad player to have as he can cover both fullback positions and center back if we really need him to. I wouldn't exactly be sad to see him go but he certainly wouldn't be someone I think we should actively be looking to get rid of.

Agree with that, but can also see as others on here have quoted we need to invest heavily in the attacking options and CM, so unless he really wants to leave I would keep him for now, and move on Smalling & Jones instead. The most unreliable players we have had since Hargreaves.

I get where you're coming from with concentrating on bringing in attacking talent, but how does it make sense to keep Darmian and sell two centre backs instead when they don't even play the same position?
