Mats Hummels

You just want him for yourself, admit it :)

I like him, think he will do well. He isnt worth the money now, but if he improves like expected, could be worth every penny. Dont think we are in for him.

We got 4 CB's for 2 position and if you add Masche, then 5. Rumour is that Bartra might be sold as he isn't getting enough playing time. There is no point of thnking about defenders, and not specially someone for 42m to sit on bench. We are more interested to find replacement for Iniesta (maybe Kovacic or Oliver Torres)

or Gündogan, anything in it?

Don't think anyone is very sure about him currently. There is definitely some interest. But with transfer ban, it might be just wait and watch for now.

Not fussed at all. He's looked terrible this season, and there were real question marks over him. For the fee mooted, I am glad we re steering clear. My guess is that we decided to pass.

It might sound like arrogance, and I suppose it is to an extent considering the relative stature of the two clubs, but I'm inclined to agree.

Perhaps he's just a very loyal character but, if that were the case, wouldn't he have confirmed his intentions a while ago? He was clearly weighing up his options and suggested a move abroad would do him good so my guess is that we've identified someone else.

Id say fair play to him if he's a loyal player but isn't he a product of Bayern's academy?

He is. He even started very early there - when he was six or seven. His father was working for Bayern and is the reason that e.g. Lahm never has been sent away even if he was always too small for his youth teams. He broke into the senior team at the wrong time. Hitzfeld was not one who really built on young players and there was no chance to get starts so he was loaned out to Dortmund in winter 2008 (still during the Hitzfeld time). He decided to stay in Dortmund in February 2009 and they sold him then.

Big stupid head on him anyway.

We desperately need a quality centre-back this summer though, desperately.

No chance he rejected the chance to move. Far, far more likely he wasn't given the choice.

Tabloids loved peddling it but in reality there's very little reason why he would be LVG's first choice given his injury record, fee and performance level all season.

I mean the hacks think along the lines of Van Gaal picking his target's based on Fifa ratings, rather than on what his scouts tell him about their current performances and whether they fit into this team in this league.
The top managers use Football Manager.

I'm happy with this news, coupled with the Gundogan trail also seemingly going cold.

Both would have been signed on the premise of them once upon a time looking like top players.

As I have said before, the names may carry some prestige, but in reality they are cat D models.

who would be vidic and who would be rio in that pertnership??

personally i dont think we should go for him. I would prefer to sign an experianced defender who has been about and will organise. Chialini.....somebody like that. John Terry would be ideal but that obviousley wont happen. Just to get a couple of years out of them.

individually our centre backs are not as bad as people make out. the problem we have with them is their injury records. but they are big lads and still young. They should hopefully be now past the stage of "growing into their frames"

If you look at first choice back fours from current top teams squads then given the age of ours i personally wouldnt swap them. We just need somebody to help Smalling, Jones and Rojo fulfill theor potential. If Smalling Jones and Shaw all reach their potential then very soon we have 3/4 of United and ENglands back four for the forseeable future.

the shambolic defending at times has come about due to a change of shape, playing style and most of all injuries.

I think Rio benefitted enormousley from 6 months with Laurent Blanc. I think Smalling, Jones and Rojo could all, by the end of next season be held in higher regard than Hummels is now!
Englands back 4 for the foreseeable future will have to include Stones. So no, we won't have 3/4 of them.

Shame. But I always had the feeling he could stay there. He is a loyal guy and in comparison to other bvb players he never made it that clear that he wants to move elsewhere. I hope we are going for Laporte now. Please no Otamendi, that guy screams big flop for me.

The timing of this news is strange. Just when there's speculation or even reports of United signing Otamendi. Maybe the Hummels PR team don't want it to seem he was rejected.

Great passer, but has regressed defensively the few times I've seen him over the last few seasons. Not sure if true but there's also been a few stories of him being injury prone.

apparently he has decided to stay at Dortmund at least until his contract runs out in 2017, that is the rumours anyway.

German magazine Kicker is reporting that Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has turned down an approach from Manchester United and will remain with the Bundesliga club next season.

The 26-year-old says he will fulfil his contract which is due to expire in 2017

"It was fair enough that Mats gave it some thought, but I have always pointed out that he is firmly part of our plans," said Dortmund's director of sport Michael Zorc.

I have a feeling that this will not be the last time we hear about Hummels. Mats ball playing style suits Otamendi's aggressive one perfectly.

Or maybe Hummels told United that he stays and then United went back to Otamendi. Or maybe United tried to sign both.

Hope these latest stories are true.

I'm happy with our defenders and thing we should only sign a new centre back if there's someone really special available.

Wait until they're all injured again. We are okay numbers wise no doubt but I still feel like we lack an alpha back there ala Vidic and Terry. If not a leader than at least a one that is comfortable on the ball, the player Evans was suppose to become.

Seems they talked to his father, who happens to be also his agent, a lot and convinced tim to stay to play under Tuchel.

Pretty disappointed by this. Think he is exactly what we need, despite rough patches over the last few years. Injuries were a concern too, but he was brilliant for Germany at the world cup, one of their best players winning that, and would've been great for us. Will be interested to see who we go after now.

We already bid 25m for Otamendi in January according to reports from Spain so i think its more likely we were trying to get both. I think Hummels + Otamendi would be a great pairing. On paper it seems they complement each other really well.

Playing Hummels in this league would be just like when we first played Laurent Blanc, a disaster.

Why should we move Smalling? He was a lot better than Hummels, why should we swap him for an inferior player?

Come on. He's not that slow.

Some of the best defenders in the world are slow. I swear some people on here are more worried about their Fifa team and pace.

Wouldn't hurt to have a third option though. The top teams in Europe have 3 good options. Bayern have Boateng, Benatia and Badstuber. Real have Ramos, Pepe and Varane. Juventus - Bonucci, Chiellini and Ogbonna.
Barca - Pique, Mascherano, Mathieu and err.. Vermaelen. For Chelsea Ivanovic can also play as a centre back. The problem with City was that when Kompany lost his mojo they did not have a reliable centreback to fall back on to partner Demechelis who is 74 years old himself.

Yeah, but because of the price we would probably play Hummels and Otamendi, which would be wrong in my opinion and what we could see this season. I think that Jones and Rojo are good third option. Real has Varane because he came very young and slowly he will take Pepe's place, we would have 3 players who are all 26-27 years old. I don't think the Bayern's defenders are really that good (but OK, it is not easy for them to play).

Looks like we've been briefing again. Some united journos are still saying Hummels fancies the move.

Ladyman is saying following in Schweinsteiger article:

"Meanwhile, United sources have revealed they are not overly worried by suggestions from Germany that defensive target Mats Hummels has agreed to stay with Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc claimed Hummels had decided to remain at his club but United believe the Germany international still wants to come to Old Trafford and will continue to keep him high up on their list."

Where's the part where Zorc says he's staying?
