Mats Hummels

I was under the impression Hummels was one of the faster CBs around?

Pace was never something for what he stood out for. He is a bulky player (90kg at 1.95m), so speed was probably always his weakest attribute. He is not a slug like some are suggesting, though. His top speed is around 32km/h, which is completely fine and his acceleration is also okay. If he is on top of his game he rarely gets outpaced or needs to resort to fouling to recover because of his good anticipating skills.

I also think that some are underrating the difficulty of extreme high defending (in terms of positioning) like Dortmund does. It is way harder to not be caught out of position if you need to cover as much space as Hummels usually does. This is a point which makes it hard to compare CB´s in that aspect like for example to Evans, who plays in a deeper laying defense.

frankly don't think speed is an issue with hummels. I would be more concerned about his injuries. Otherwise he s the rolls royce of defenders.

Keep in mind that the with/out Hummels gap is also down to Dortmund having a relatively easy start to the season - they faced Bayern+Leverkusen while he was injured.

We should raid Dortmund this summer and get all three - Gundogan, Hummels and Reus. Actually while we are at it, we should get Bender as well.

Injuries aside, this guy would probably be the most outstanding CB we could reasonably buy, no? Not that I think there's any chance of it happening.

Dortmund will not sell him for anyprice even remotely reasonable. And I'm not sure if Hummels would even want to leave.

German newbie again:

Here's what he said in the interview from Sunday, and it's not the first time he said so:

Welt am Sonntag: So it doesn't have to always be a title for you?

Hummels: I've never judged my career in terms of titles. For me it's about something else: I love to play football, prefer the style of football that suits me best. I do not say, 'If I have never won the Champions League, I am not happy in life'.

Welt am Sonntag: At Bayern is a greater probability for titles.

Hummels: I must not necessarily play for the best team in the world just to have a relative guarantee for a title. I would prefer a Champions League title with BVB to winning six with another club.

After the announcement that Götze will leave, he gave some interviews with similar content, includingt the statement that if you can't live on €3m per annum as a player, you can't live on €8m either. He's unique in many ways

If some people on here were to be believed, Klopp would even sell his kids if it could get Kagawa back to Dortmund.

Just because some people place Kagawa on a higher pedestal than he deserves based on his time at Dortmund (just today I read about it being generally accepted that he was the best player of the Bundesliga the time you guys signed him) to suit their opinion, does not mean it is necessarily the truth.

Kagawa would be right now a wonderful addition for Dortmund, but ultimately more of a luxury buy. Certainly not important enough to let go the hardest player for them to replace.

Regarding the posted interview part: Hummels was always very vocal about his loyalty to Dortmund and backed it up with his current contract (5 years without clause back then). In difference to most of their already departed player and the ones speculated to leave in the near future he is also something they never were: a lead player. Kagawa, Götze, Lewandowski, Gündogan or Reus were/are all standout player in one form or another, but they were never in charge of the team. Nuri Sahin is the only exception here, but he left at a time when Dortmund could have very well turned out as a one season wonder.

Hummels was a regular at the age of 19, head of the defense at 20, part of the player council since 21 and third in line as captain since a year after that. He is also the obvious choice as successor of current captain Sebastian Kehl once the latter either retires or leaves to end his career in the States. He is already the most important player when it comes to representing the team to the public off the pitch.

Hummels was always and still is the most likeliest star player to stay at Dortmund for the long run.

Some refreshing quotes from him. He sounds like a decent fellow. I for one hope Klopp gets to keep as many of his players as possible, as I'd like to see how far he can take this team.

This guy when healthy, is the best CB in the world. More importantly if we sign him, he would go straight into All-time United Most Good Looking XI.

Dortmund newbie PM'ed this to me:

Oh... :(

So for getting an offensive midfielder for a position, where they spend their record transfer fee (Mkhitaryan), they are letting the leader of the defense, second most important build up player and future captain (according to most people close to the club) go?

I think you are either overestimating how much Klopp would want Kagawa back or underestimate Hummels´ role in the team. Maybe a bit of both.

Certainly not underestimating Hummel's importance but after reading the above post it would seem I was certainly overestimating Klopp's desire to work with Kagawa again.

Kagawa's gunna move on for next to nothing in the Summer. What a waste.

One of the best playing defenders around, he is slightly error-prone but that's me playing devil's advocate. He is physical, composed on the ball and reads the game well. Based on what I read in the interviews he seems like an unusually loyal player too. I think he would do well here, all three defenders he could partner are quite mobile so as a pair they have the potential to be top quality. I doubt he leaves Dortmund though.

It's a shame for Hummels that he got injured this season because he started to look like he was finally finding his form again after having quite a few problems last season. Hope he can stay fit for the rest of the season and keep on playing on a good level because we really could need a Hummels in top form for the WC.

Last summer we were supposed to get bale, ronaldo, fabregas and de rossi but instead we got fellaini so I won't get a stify over this one any time soon

We won't be in for him, or any other center back for that matter. Moyes said that the Vidic replacement is already at the club, so upto Evans, Jones and Smalling to step up and stop being such crocks.

http://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-F.../Feb/Vidic-replacement-already-at-United.aspx

He's not exactly going to say we're out to buy another centre back for a few reasons. 1- Motivates those 3 to actually crack on. 2- If he admits they are not good enough, it will just demotivate and 3- He probably does not every club in the world thinking we're desperate for a centre back.

With Vidic going, and in the unlikely case Rio stays, he's practically always injured... So i very much doubt we'll be going into next season with only 3 centre backs, especially when 2 of them have such great injury records as Jones and Smalling.

Daily Mail are linking us with this fine man today. Might be worth monitoring. We are desperate for a centre half and I dont see us linked with many just yet.

Don´t see you guys spending 50+ Mil. € on a CB.

I watched him many times, no one can convince me that is fast, he is really slow but is a player with immense qualities.

His acceleration is probably his main weakness. He isn't as slow as Mertesacker but he will get into trouble if he is in the wrong position. His passing is absolutely excellent though and he usually makes up for his slowness through good positioning.

3 strikers, 2 of them out of position, with an attacking mid as well? My word.

Serious q: Do you really think that RVP should play in the wide position, as well as Rooney and we should then either wait for some of the to get injured or sell Kagawa (since neither will accept being 2nd choice).
And: Is there anyone in here who does NOT live in FM-World?

We should raid Dortmund this summer and get all three - Gundogan, Hummels and Reus. Actually while we are at it, we should get Bender as well.
And Subotic, and Durm, and Jojic, and Aubamyang, and Klopp...(Dortmund United inc.):P

Is he quite injury prone? Seems a very regular occurrence when watching Dortmund that he isn't fit. He is a fantastic player but we have enough injury prone defenders and if we are going to spend 30m plus on one then they'd need a good injury record.

Is there a player less likely to leave Dortmund in the near future provided teams come in for them?

What makes you so sure?

That post was made back in Feb when Moyes was still manager and Kagawa was being completely frozen out.

I don't think he'll want to be going anywhere now.

I'd rather Varane and build a back 4 for the future 8-9 years together accepting the blips for something great.

Don´t worry van Gaal will buy some unknown CB from the Dutch league and have him tear up the PL in no time!
