Ronaldo in May 2009: "I'm happy at Manchester United."
June 2009: Signs for Real.
We subsequently find out in SAF's autobiography that he wanted to leave a year earlier. Don't believe what a footballer says in public. If you do then you need a reality check.
You see there's a difference in the confirmation of the statements and what you've also missed out is the many ambiguous quotes that Ronaldo said at that time talking about how it was his dream to play for Madrid.
Hummels has never said anything similar about any club other than Dortmund.
When you get statements like: "What I have here at Dortmund I won't find anywhere else" That confirms that he's not looking for money, because clearly Dortmund aren't the richest club in the world, he's not looking for fame or big sponsorship deals or anything - he feels a connection to the club that he feels he won't find anywhere else.
As a United fan, when Ronaldo said he was happy at United - you knew deep down that he had eyes for Madrid and it was only a matter of time.
Ronaldo at no point rejected Madrid or flat out said, "I don't want to leave United" - because he did, doesn't mean he was unhappy though.
When a player is "happy" where they are - yes, it means they are settled but not opposed to a move - and that is the most politically correct statement they can say that doesn't anger the fans, manager or put off any potential moves from the clubs in the market to buy them.
When a player says a big money transfer doesn't interest him, and he has a connection to the club he's currently at - what can you do? If you're looking to buy him you can't lure him with money, and he's openly and publicly rejected us - what step can you take?
He's obviously been offered large contracts by other clubs, ourselves included possibly, and he hasn't even budged - he continues to say much he wants to stay and it's not ambiguous it's definitive.
That's the difference.
