Mats Hummels

That is a weird story. It doesn't even have an "according to reports" type get out clause in it. Sport comes up with some odd stuff at times, usually to get Barcelona fans excited, but I can't even guess why they'd write this.

Misheard gossip perhaps? Can anyone think of a player whose name rhymes with Hummels?[/QUOTE]

Vidal.

This is a goer lads, once Vidal is sealed (the end of the week) then well be onto this guy and well get him. No doubt.

20m euro for Hummels? Sounds plausible.

How come we got Kagawa for such a decent price guys? Was his contract due to run out or something?

Klopp seems to speak highly of him, his performances there were very good. So why did he go for such a low figure?

I think he had a year remaining, yeah.

Don't forget they'd only just got back into the CL the season before his sale, having been in the wilderness and in all sorts of horrendous financial difficulty since the mid-2000s. At that point their financial model included having to sell their best players on a regular basis. Now though they're largely sorted, they're CL regulars and (probably) will be for the forseeable future, so they no longer need to sell.

No it didn´t. Dunno where this myth is coming from. We let none of our top player go because we needed the cash. Under the current leadership we never banked on transfer income to balance the books. By 2011 we were already profitable based on normal revenue and before that we at least broke even.

We let Kagawa go, because he had only one year contract left and pushed for a move. Furthermore, we had his replacement for his position (Götze) already in the squad and another one (Reus) as new addition for roughly the money we got for Kagawa. We were never forced to sell, though, but did it because it was the reasonable thing to do then. Forcing a player to run down his contract is only in specific situation advantagous for a club and Kagawa was not one of those.

While this report may well be nonsense, I do think there is something in the whole Hummels chatter. Just a gut feeling, of course.

What chatter? There is no chatter coming from the German side, which is what you would expect if there would be any substance in the rumors. It is paper talk and only from the Britsh and Spanish press. The player and club clearly positioned themselves very publically and no German paper or source with any credibility picks up the rumors without denying it at the same time.

Agreed. Barcelona have made it pretty clear that we're in for him. Whether we can get Dortmund to sell is another matter!

Andy Mitten has been briefed on this one on multiple occasions. He has his contacts, it simply depends how solid they are. The latter is something I do not know, however, he's affirmed on two or three occasions now that we are interested and are confident he could be a United player at some point in the future. Rightly or wrongly, Mitten holds faith in his source.

I relaly dont think this signing will be as difficult as people are making out on here. We seem to be pretty chummy with Dortmund these days, perhaps the Kagawa deal was very good for them with additions.

Now that the Hummels transfer is done and dusted let's also make a 20m offer for Reus. Will be hard for Dortmund to turn so much cash down.

.... lolzy O:

He wouldn't be my first-choice personally, I'm still not 100% convinced for some reason. I'd throw a huge amount at Real/Varane and see if Los Blancos could be willing to cash in due to any FFP obstacles to satisfying their lusts and Varane's contract situation.

I reckon we could buy Dortmund for £100million so we can cannibalise their squad and turn them into our feeder club.

Does this mean we can ditch Fellaini, Young etc there when we show up for Reus and Hummels?

Well, thats believable. I also think that United is probably interested and they are one of the very few destinations a Hummels might take in the future, if he decides to leave. Just not this Summer.

Now that's just posting like a spoilt rich kid. Its disrespectful considering on last season form they have a better team than ours.

I find it hard to believe Barca and the likes wouldn't also be all over him if he was for sale, given the shortage of quality CB's out there right now. I also flat out just couldn't see him leaving Dortmund. This one seems completely improbable and I will not get invested in it!

I was talking about the Rocisky-era. However if it didn't stretch as far as Kagawa, then fine.

Hummels for 20m + Kagawa would sound more believable but as for 20m on its own.. no hope! Although if this some how had some truth in it, it would be one of our best buys in terms of value for money.

As far as I can remember the last player who Dortmund (officially) sold because of ze money was Petric in 2008.

Look at the prices quoted for top tier defenders like Benetia and Mangala, why on earth would Dortmund (who doesnt need to sell and doesnt need the money) sell their best defender for a paltry sum of 20m?!
That makes no sense, you would think one of Germany's best defenders, coming off a World Cup win would cost at least double that.

Kagawa + 20M makes sense...but I heard Klopp and co say that they no longer require Kagawa as they have Mkhitaryan.

Apparently Dortmund have put this to bed, yet again:

“Calm for all Dortmund fans. BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed in ‘Welt on Sunday’ that fit again Marco Reus and world champion Mats Hummels are not for sale,” reads a report in Bild.

Not that I'm saying we're buying him, but whenever the CEO or some top official says that a player is 'not for sale', it should be taken with a pinch of salt. E.g. Sanchez, Fabregas.

It is a bit odd that he only really tweets in English.

Tweeting thanks to the German fans after the WC welcome home party etc.

I would be embarassed to pay £17m for Hummels, Eddy should do the decent thing and pay £30m as a gesture of goodwill.

I would rather give Anderson and Young as a goodwill gesture, along with £17m. 3 birds in 1 one stone and all.
