Mathys Tel

I remember a few months or a year back that Tel said he wanted to play as a striker more than a winger.

I think he only played as a winger because Bayern had more strikers in their prime.
They most certainly did not. 22/23 they only had Choupo-Mouting as the main striker, an unconvincing young Zirkzee, and the declining and not-really-a-striker Mueller. Tel played 421 minutes as a striker that season. 23/24 added Kane and removed Zirkzee, and saw Tel drop to 274 minutes as a striker - still more than double the time he has spent as a striker this season so far, despite Choupo-Mouting having left the club. They're even playing Mueller ahead of him when Kane gets a break or isn't available.

To me it just looks like Bayern have pretty much given up on him being striker material, at least in their single-striker system. Bayern certainly isn't drowning in great strikers to compete for the position.

How much patience would you like the fanbase to have with Hojlund. What would it require for you to think he's not the level required.

Genuine question, because it would be interesting to see what your parameters are besides the fact that he's young.

Its not really about Højlund though. If you come in to United in its current state you need to really hit the ground running. Tel hasnt really, according to Bayern fans on the fc Bayern forum "Südkurve", taken his chance when subbed on and never really impressed. Its damning that he couldnt even take the spot from Zirkzee.
So this seems like a awful transfer, both for the player and for us.

There’s a good player in there. We just have no place for him right now and his confidence is shot by his lack of opportunity. However, he has a good mentality, seems to work quite hard and the talent is there. He will find his place somewhere.

I haven't watched him for a long time and it's clear that he has disappointed in some way at Bayern, but he has real talent and genuine pace. Wouldn't mind a punt on him one bit if he's up for a challenge.

I’ve not seen a lot of him, I’ve seen enough to know he’s a talented player and wasted on your bench. But why don’t you think he’d be useful to us? Too young/inexperienced? Wrong profile of player?
He still needs to find his ideal position. He is not fast enough and not good enough in 1vs1 situations to be a winger, he is not physical enough to be the centre forward, his passing is not good eough to be a number 10.

I think he is probably best right now in a system with two strikers that barely any top clubs play.

You are right, he is wasted on our bench.
That is why he needs to go a team where he is almost guaranteed to get enough playing time and where he can develop.
Would you say you are the right club for this?

No, I’ve made this point with Hojlund but we’re not the right place to be developing youngsters right now because we are playing badly and over reliant on them. I think it’s a recipe for disaster until we start playing better or they become backup players and can be managed properly.

Seems I wasted 30 mins getting excited over his YouTube comps yesterday evening.

Think Chelsea are front runners as Bayern want Nkunku so looks a very simple deal for them

There was a reporting from Germany saying he doesn’t want to go to Chelsea due to too much competition and him wanting game time. It would make sense especially if they are sending him on loan.

Marseille? Would make sense that they need a new striker after selling Wahi to Frankfurt (where he replaced Marmoush who went to City). The roundabout in full swing.

Apparently Tier 1 journalist being quoted (@pokeefe1) on X saying Tel wants United.

What makes it more significant and serious for me is that he is supposedly Tier 1 for Spurs specifically. And the original post is a breaking story from Mokbel at DM that Spurs have entered the race for Tel. So it seems it's new information he clearly went to find out about. He could have chosen any other club if he was making it up and it was not coming directly from a source (Hopefully a top one).

He’s a very good source for Spurs yeah. Very interesting development.

Would he be a reasonable loan shout for Arsenal? We literally have nothing behind Havertz just now, and very little behind Martinelli and Trossard, so he'd be guaranteed to get good minutes.

We aren't going to get any of our main targets this window, so need some sort of alternative, or we just risk running those 3 into the ground.

Will be totally dependent on Garnacho I would imagine.

They would need to find at least £12 million in PSR space otherwise (assuming he’s ~£60 million)

They want Nkunku. Take Rashford he’s cheaper to sign and no injury risk. Rashford on loan with an option to buy for £40m and we take Tel in a similar deal.

£40 million for Rashford

I’d snap anyone’s fecking hand off to get £20 million.
 I know but he’s still Marcus Rashford at 27 years old. That has to count for something.

Mane cost £35m at 30 with 12 month left on his contract if I remember correctly.

United and Bayern seem to have a pretty solid working relationship and mutual respect

If United are in a position to do a deal, I’m confident that Bayern won’t piss us about

Mane at 30 were better than Rashford at 27..
Also, some news said Rashford rejected Saudi Club's offer which can offer a large amount of transfer fee

Really hope this goes through. The #10 position is the one where we must strengthen.

As exciting as it would be, reading the Bayern fans opinions, it's just not the right time for us. He's not ready to be relied on as no 9 or 10, and we really don't need another project
