Mata | Mourinho says it's just a Mata of time

I remember at the beginning of the season, someone - i think in the Wayne Rooney thread - said that maybe the club wouldn't be interested in Mata because they haven't scouted him and so don't know his qualities as a player.

Well, I'm glad we've done all the scouting neccesary to get it done 6 months later. Oh yes.

 I remember that too.

What, the time that the best player in the world was prized away from Barcelona for a world record fee, prompting the Barca president to say:

"We aren't going to start anything but, and I don't want this to sound like a threat, I'm not going to forget this," he said.
"Someone who does this to me will pay for it."
Yeah, it's uncannily similar.
Well done on picking up where the actual similarities are. Cheers for that.

It's getting late have you seen date
Ma tell me what is Moyes doing here
It's one o'clock and I'm holding my cock
Watching the telly full of fear

Don't give us none of your explanations
We had it with your transfer spin
Mata-day's quite alright for signing
Get a little Spaniard in

Get about as oiled as a diesel train
Gonna set my pants alight
`Cause Mata-day's quite the sight I like
Mata-day's quite alright alright alright

Mata-day, Mata-day, Mata-day
Mata-day, Mata-day, Mata-day
Mata-day, Mata-day, Mata-day quite alright
To the Elton John song?

That's just beautiful.

Jesus... stopped reading at "United could have had the real Özil, not just an out-of-favour imitation".

Right, Mata is just an imitation Ozil... that's what everybody has always said, right?

And Ozil definitely wasn't out of favour, was he? Arsenal had to battle tooth and nail to get Madrid to give their prize asset up, IIRC.

Does anyone else get the feeling that everyone, newspapers, twatty ex-players like Perry Groves on the radio, were expecting/hoping for us to just collapse as a club? There's a lot of bitterness about over this signing. We haven't even done the deal yet and the above article is out. It feels like everyone was looking forward to us coming about 7th, losing Rooney and RVP, and just laying into us. Now we've signed Mata, Rooney looks like he might stay, and it sounds like we're actively after other top players. Or is it the ABU paranoia coming out in me?

Go back to 2004-2005.
Or 2002.
Or 1995.

"United's empire is dead" articles are journo wet dreams.

Not really, the two situations aren't even remotely comparable.

It's more like the Verón transfer.
Erm, not really. Veron was an underachiever sold on for a cut price. I was thinking more a top club selling their player of the year to the biggest club in their league and all their fans going bananas.

But never mind, must just be me then

Mata is surplus to requirements at Chelsea, no matter how good he is, just as Özil was at Madrid. Figo was a key player.
There's no deadly, spiteful and hateful rivalry between United and Chelsea.
I doubt Mata will be viewed as a traitor by the Chelsea fans.

Or he could simply be accepting what is a really good offer for a wantaway player they don't need?

I hope so! Anyways I am ecstatic about this transfer. We've signed two of the best players in the premier league two seasons in a row now. Off of our fierce rivals no less.

Woodward did good this time around.

Exactly. Things were much more bleak back then. We failed to win the title for 2-3 years during chelski's dominance. Nobody back then could forsee how good Ronaldo and Rooney would become though.

In fairness to Mourinho, he could have been a dick about it and let him rot for the rest of the season rather than join us. But bottom line I suspect they had doubts they could get the same fee elsewhere and FFP seems to be looming large, given that he mentioned it in the press conference.

It's not a small fee, but for a player of his quality that is the going rate these days it seems (see Ozil).

I wonder if Chelsea fans will boo him next season?

I can't really see the sense behind doing so - but still, it's football.

Yeah, I'm of the same view. The only reason the fee feels a bit high is because he's been out of the team the last few months. If he'd been playing - and I suspect he would under any other manager - that fee is pretty reasonable for a player in the top 4 or 5 in the league and of his age.

I'm fecking exhausted from the emotions I've invested in this thread.

Time to take a nap, or maybe have a wank. Probably both.

Is that a "Waap" or a "Nank"?

There is one massive difference this time. When they've questioned Fergie's ability, he's proved it. Let's hope Moyes can ram it down their throats too (ooh er).

I'm not surprised. As soon as i get promoted to the mains, we get our first major signing. Coincidence? No. More like fate. No. More like destiny.

It's only expensive if you consider we've spent £64m on two players... but that should never really have happened.
