Gaming Mass Effect: Andromeda (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

You can trust reviews. The thing that has changed though is that before a 85/100 was a good game (for an AAA) while now you need to look for 92-94/100.

Really conflicted about this right now. Played the trial upto the story cut-off and personally I dont mind the animations, mostly due to the fact that I read the subtitles instead of waiting for the dialog to finish. The combat feels good to me and considering I havent unlocked the more damaging powers yet, things will only get better.

More like the average of reviews shoulf be 9.2+/10 (92+/100) for an AAA to be a great game.

For indies, it is lower.

Just personal rule from my experience.
Don't agree with that. Yakuza 0 is the best game I've played in a very long time and it looks like Horizon is a great game too from what everyone is saying.

Completely disagree. Reviewers are harsher now - it is harder to get into the 90's. Just look at Horizon for example - sitting on 89, but is recognised as an amazing game.

I sort of agree with Revan, with small corrections. Anything above 80/100 (8.0/10) relatively could be a good/very good to 'best of it's console' game. The ones that transcend their platform will be the 90+/100 (9.0+/10)s.

You seriously think Horizon doesn't transcend on the PS4? The game is amazing and 'only' sits on 89.

I get what you're saying - but I'm saying it is harder to get into the 90's now. So for Revan to say that triple A games need to be 92-94/100 is wrong. It's going to be very hard to achieve that nowadays.

I've finished the story trial and I think it's pretty good. The combat in particular seems fun and the game seems huge.

It probably does, because it's an 89 from 107 critics and an 8.5 from over 4000 users which is no easy feat. 90+ is a rough ballpark but there does need to be context.

Just saw a 'Super Deluxe Edition' advertised. Didn't check to see what was included but it's an absolute joke that they sell things like that before they polish the base game.

These are the same people who sold a day one DLC with Mass Effect 3, which was for a character who was a major part of the story.

I'm waiting for the reviews on this before I buy.

Combining the review scores with the user scores and working the mean tends to give you a fair depiction. I definitely disagree that a triple A needs 92+ to be good. That's way too high.

I got that Origin Access to try this out. Really liked the trilogy and I've been mostly fine even with the terrible ending and the non-existent consequence of choices.

Two hours in this new one and I'm skipping dialogue. The writing is awful. It's really, really bad. For an RPG this is a big deal for me. And not like the gameplay is very fun too.

I don't think I'll be getting this full price.

Is fallout 4 that bad? I liked 3 and I've bought 4 for a fourth of its original price. Mistake?
I meant actual fallout, as in people getting annoyed that reviews glossed over the problems.

Since you ask though, I played about 100 hours of it and I haven't a single clue why. It does nothing well, it even manages to screw up your freedom of character by giving you a voice. Yet it's weirdly addictive. It doesn't do anything particularly bad either, it just kind of exists. Except the story, the story is terrible. That's what made me stop playing, I just couldn't be arsed hearing any more of it.

I think that's fair for Horizon. It didn't deserve the 10/10 scores it got. No game deserves 10/10, but Horizon in particular baffled me. I played about 20 hours of it and felt no need to keep playing as I had better games to play, it's a 7 or 8 out of 10 game.

My point about reviews was that games reviewers have a history of, knowingly or not, sneaking things by people in their reviews. Sometimes they even spend the text of a review making a game sound crap then slap an 8 or 9 on it. Half the time they feel like an extension of the publishers PR division. Most of the previews I've read of ME:A so far have been trying to hype it, while not really saying anything good about it. Very few have mentioned the dialogue, writing or animations. Like a snake oil salesman.

Am I the only one that thought Horizon wasn't all that?
Well probably not, look at the post right above you.

I agree the reviews are slightly inflated, probably down to the game being one of Sony's real solid exclusives/competition against the even more sensationalised Zelda, but it still warrants a solid 8/10. Not without its faults or anything but it was a very good game, a great dip in the ocean for Guerrilla on their first RPG-style game.

Interesting article by a reviewer who says that EA/Bioware have screwed up and the embargo may hurt the game, since it limits what people can show (since reviewers can only show up to Eos in their videos) and that the game does get better than what the initial gameplay shows.

Also important to note that this is a different studio (team) making ME:A . The original team behind the trilogy is working on a new IP - although a few key people have come across admittedly.

This combined with the new engine (frostbite) is probably causing the luke warm reception we're getting at the moment. It's so sad - I lvoe the franchise, so hopefully I can look past the negatives I keep hearing.

No. The lead designer tweeted "That ship has sailed" on animation being fixed for Day 1 but may be addressed in future patches.
Have they explained why they allowed such a substandard product to be released in the first place?

Am I the only one that thought Horizon wasn't all that?

It's decent enough imo, but suffers the same fate as most of these games, it get's a bit boring and samey half way through.

The sort of games on the next level, say Witcher and Zelda don't suffer from that. Witcher does with the gameplay, but the great story and side quests keep it interesting until the end. Zelda, is just one of those rare games that deserves the super high praise.

This looks to be a level below again, but I'll reserve final judgement until I play it. Though unlike the three games above, I'll definitely be waiting until it's cheap enough, I'm just not inspired enough by what I've seen.

The feck, Bioware?

Fallout 4 is terrible compared to 3 and New Vegas. It's extremely dumbed down and the quests are awful. It's decent if you just treat it as a open world shooter and not a rpg

 these animation gifs. How did they get past testing?

I suppose if you look at it as some kind of retro 70's sci fi show you can roll with it. Oh bioware

I've put in about 3 hours so far and it seems ok. Frame rate seems dodgy though.

I'm upgrading my GPU for this one. Was going to get a couple of GTX 1080 TI as I haven't upgraded my rig in 5 years

Then I got wind of AMD Rx vega and sound promising. Should make for a nice flagship gpu price war st last. The 1080 ti has dropped in price already.

I think I will wait to see game benchmarks and inevitable price drops before pulling the trigger

Hmm I bought that for a friends birthday recently he's a big fan. I was like meh I can't see myself enjoying it. Looks like another generic title in the geno

Is it really the that good? What do you enjoy about it?
