Mason Mount | Confirmed

What position do you see him playing?
Eriksen role?

He is not getting ahead of Bruno in CAM.

I really don't understand the need for Mount!

City have like 3/4 top players who are only on bench most weeks. We need to bolster our ranks.

There's strong rumours we are after Rice Kane and Mount now too so there's clearly a ton of money coming in very soon.

If Kane isn’t a goer then Osimhen has to be. We don’t score enough goals, and I’d even argue we don’t just need one striker but two. Unless we’ve been given unlimited Qatari funds but none of us know it yet, it makes no sense to spend most of our budget on Mason mount.

I’ve nothing against mount either btw. He’s decent, inoffensive and if it was for 20m I’d say yeah get it wrapped up early. But it’s a matter of opportunity cost.
I don't disagree with you in many ways. We must come out of the summer with at least one striker. But it may be that the striker deal is a much more complicated deal. You say move on to Osimhen... there is no guarantee he's available either, plus we'll have more competition for him from Bayern and Chelsea if he is available. If we already plan to strengthen our midfield as well, have contigency plans for budget and can see a target becoming available, why wouldn't we move on him? Yes it comes with risk to our overall plans, but no plans ever come out exactly as you want them to

He isn't a version of Kovacic either, he is no version of any player that is a high level technician. And it's an attacking midfielder that is subpar when played deeper.
OK. We won't agree on that one but doesn't matter really.

Some mad comparisons here, ranging from Modric to Kevin Nolan.

This “tactical flexibility” stuff is a joke, right? He’s not a no.8 because he absolutely lacks the passing range and positional discipline to play as an actual central midfielder. He’s not really a no.10 because he’s nowhere near creative enough, and his average league goal tally is 6 in the 4 seasons he’s been a mainstay at Chelsea. He’s nowhere near quick nor good enough at dribbling to play as a winger. He’s also (of course) not a striker.

Being pretty mediocre in a bunch of positions doesn’t make you “tactically flexible”.
It’s some buzz word for average / not good enough players. WW is also tactically flexible, that’s why we play our two best attacking players out of position to accommodate the tactically very flexible genius.

Liverpool would sign Mount in a heartbeat imo, Klopp would turn him into a monster, I don't get some posters Liverpool won trophies with Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho in midfield and Mount is better than Henderson and Wijnaldum by quite a distance and we want to compete for those same trophies it's not like Mount is some abomination he is a good player who probably in his career has had one actual coach and he won the CL with him whilst being an integral member of the team

If the manager wants to sign a midfielder who can bag goals and assists and who can press like he does what's not to like I trust the manager to make the right call

I could see him play that Wijnalsdum role really well. I would be very curious to see something like that:

---------------------Rashford
Garnacho------------------------Antony
----------Rabiot-Casemiro-Mount
Shaw-Martinez-Varane--Frimpong
-------------------Someone

I think if Ten Hag wants to sign Mason Mount, he has a plan on how to utilize the player. So let's trust him to do that, I think EtH's signings from last summer were all pretty good.

Our scouts are either so happy being the best-paid holidaymakers or hate their jobs because no one listens to them.

We always get involved in the "obvious" signings. Mount for 50m is seen as a safe-ish bet but we won't get a lesser-known player for 10m because then it's risky.

No I agree, he’s a decent player, but not for 70m.

Wouldn't this line up lack creativity a little .

Who cares if Klopp or Arteta want him? Should we then also have signed everyone else they signed/were interested in? They have different requirements to us. Liverpool for example don’t have a player like Bruno. A midfield of Mount, Thiago and Fabinho could work very well. They need legs and energy in midfield more than we do.
Whereas we mainly need a creative CM. Sign one expensive one or two decent/good ones, what is the scouting doing? I keep reading how we have modernised our scouting and all that and then we come up with Mason Mount as target. We have enough mediocre hard working midfielders, we don’t need another expensive one with similar attributes + pressing. We need ball retention and creativity.

I'm sure it's the latter. Man Utd have an obsession with giving the manager the vast majority of recruitment power, before they've earned the right to do so. If you look at the likes of Brighton, they leave the recruiting up to the team of specialists, and let the manager do what they excel at, coaching and managing the players. That way they can keep their high standards and recruitment philosophy no matter who's managing the team, making them a lot more future proof. I'm all for the manager having the final say, but such fundamental responsibility has to be earned first.

Well, why don’t you just tell me your preference names based on the graphic that you want to use rather than going circle criticising the argument because your criticism hasn’t conclude anything.
We're going in circles as I don't think you understand my argument or I'm not explaining myself well enough.

The position we tend to see assumes there isn't a player with the profile we're looking for because people can't name them. You can see there are players out there who perform in the metrics for what we're looking for. I don't have a preference of who, it's all about profile in terms of what they bring to the group.

Back to Mount - he is the right profile of player, but he clearly is extremely expensive, especially as he doesn't really excel in the areas we're crying out for.

If we're looking at Chelsea we'd be much much better off going for Kovacic than Mount...

Probably cheaper too without the English tax

Wouldn't this line up lack creativity a little .

It leans on the industrious but technical side. The key would be for Garnacho and Antony to be adventurous. But I think that you can absolutely kick most teams in the mouth especially if you master a high press.

All the reports are saying ten Hag wants Mount and we have people in here coming up with crazy conspiracy theories about Arnold, Murtough and Ratcliffe.

Only because the solid links to any foreign players has totally died down since Monday

De Gea
AWB Varane Martinez Shaw
Casemiro Rice
Bruno Mount Rashford
Kane
This could be our starting 11 next season...

Oh look we've just saved ourselves £55 million..

This thread is like a small off-season appetizer, and probably a reminder to scale down Caf usage after the FA Cup Final (at least for me).

I’d take him if he’s content in being a squad player and the prices is 30-40 million, another over that and we’re getting fleeced.

He’d be a decent rotation option for cup games nothing more than that.

I might have mixed the Modrić part but he did say Mount is a type of the player who usually doesn't come out of the youth system track in England.
He strikes me as an English version of Kovačić.
So you are just making it up as you go along. Now he is like Kovacic?

based on what, what is he better at exactly?

Not sure these decisions were made a week ago.
A lot of the players on the way out are home grown. It may simply be to balance that out

If you look at the under the radar signings we have made I cannot bring to mind any that have been successful, even broken into the first team, a few through the you scheme, notably Garnacho from Atleti which at 420k seems like a great deal, especially compared to the fees mentioned in regards to Amad and Pelistri.

I think the last player we signed I had no idea of, who actually turned out to be successful would be Vidic, I am not accepting Martial as a success

So I have no faith in our scouting team

So why aren't they after Mount? He is English, will be much cheaper than Mac Allister due to contract situation.

Where is Bruno?

If we had followed this principle, we'd have turned it around much sooner and not wasted so much money. It pains me see that we still give too much control to manager regarding transfers.

Antony is in the lower percentile for creation and cannot shoot well. We would be even worse of for goals than this season imo

Im interested, because for the last few months Liverpool have been eyeing him up and apparently Klopp rates him. There's something there in Mount that managers who like to press want in their teams. Arteta too apparently.

In the right set up, could he a player to utilize as a small cog in a balanced squad rather than a player to base your team around? 40-50m i think its worth a shot.

Mount is a decent player. However I don't understand why we have to be so predictable and part with £50 million for him (and pay him something in the region of £200,000 per week, in all likelihood) when we could instead construct awesome playmaking depth for the foreseeable future with a similar-ish investment by signing 2-3 cheaper talents with comparable or better technical conditions — like Martin Baturina at Dinamo Zagreb (widely considered the best young midfielder at the club since Kovacić), Kang-in Lee at Mallorca (one of the most effective ball-carriers in La Liga and has a €17 million release clause), Xavi Simons at PSV (versatile, and probably the most dominant player at the club since Robben (buyback complications with Paris Saint-Germain notwithstanding)), Alberto Moleiro at Las Palmas (pocket-sized dynamo who is 2nd for assists in the Segunda División), Arda Güler at Fenerbahçe (adapts to different roles and has a knack for killer passes), Alex Scott at Bristol City (wonderfully press resistant, shades of Frenkie de Jong) and others, no doubt (I'm by no means a professional scout with access to top-of-the-line archives and databases). Maybe players like that will not amount to much in the Premier League (whereas Mount is proven to a reasonably good level), but every season we see clubs making astute signings that pay dividends — we won't know until we get creative and take the proverbial plunge, will we?
