Mason Mount | Confirmed

Lets just say I'd be more opposed to 100M+ for Rice than I'd be for <=50M for Mount.

Really on the fence with this one. If ETH has a plan to accommodate Mount and Bruno together then it might be okay, but I suspect it will just end up with Bruno being shifted from one position to another on a weekly basis. Bruno puts in a shift anywhere but I think we need to build around him in one position because when Bruno plays well United play well, doesnt make sense to move one of our best players from 8, to 10, to 6, to the wing. Alternatively, Mount would just end up being a pretty expensive bench player.

You genuinely believe anyone telling you that Mason Mount is the closest thing to Modric?
He was talking style wise, not ability wise, I still can't believe there are people who can't differentiate those two things.

For the fecking last time, when people get it through their heads that Wout was signed as emergency cover in January when it was difficult to sign anyone.
Don't pretend like Weghorst wasn't a preference of Ten Hag's.

How were they the closest things stylistically? My question wasn't narrowed down to ability so I don't really see why you would frame it that way.

This “tactical flexibility” stuff is a joke, right? He’s not a no.8 because he absolutely lacks the passing range and positional discipline to play as an actual central midfielder. He’s not really a no.10 because he’s nowhere near creative enough, and his average league goal tally is 6 in the 4 seasons he’s been a mainstay at Chelsea. He’s nowhere near quick nor good enough at dribbling to play as a winger. He’s also (of course) not a striker.

Being pretty mediocre in a bunch of positions doesn’t make you “tactically flexible”.

It's the CAF, people will convince themselves shit is gold when united are linked to a player or when a player breaks put from the academy.

Truth is, Mount fails the eye test whenever you look at him. That it takes a video of "why managers love him" to convince you tells its own story. Managers love Ashley Young too, still he is was a level below us as a team even at his very best.

WTF are you on about? You said Weghorst was signed for a title challenge. Of course he was selected by Ten Hag but that's because there were limited options in January.
We were in a title challenge when we signed Weghorst?

Would not be cheap and wont make a big difference to what we need. If we get him for 30m then sure why not but if we are being quoted 50m upwards and that will mean comprising in other positions, then i would be happy if we stay away from this signing.

For £25-30m he'd be an excellent buy, in my opinion. Think he's a little underrated by some. But yeah, anything north of £40m is madness.

I really don't get the disdain for him at all.

Compared to the general standard of attacking midfielders across the league, he's above average in pretty much every aspect of on the ball play. Touch, passing, shooting, carrying, etc. The base level of technicality in our squad goes up if he's added.

And off the ball, he's a pressing machine. All that combined makes for a very good player for a side who want to play technical, pressing football. Certainly a stylistic fit for the team if not a positional one.

I can understand people thinking he isn't a particularly good fit position-wise (I don't either), or that he doesn't impose himself on games enough, or having concerns that he isn't creative enough if we actually played him instead of Bruno. But some of the posts make him sound far less than the at worst perfectly fine, technically sound, hard-working player he is.

Someone above saying he fails the eye test whenever you look at him, when in reality he's generally looked like the highly competent player the statistics suggest he is when I've watched Chelsea. I can only think his England performances have addled people's perception of his somewhat, because based on the previous three seasons of his actual performances for his club he's obviously a fine player at our level and someone other top English clubs would inevitably look to sign.

I'm not criticising you for not knowing anyone, I'm criticising the argument. I don't personally have access to something like wyscout, or whatever to screen on metrics, but it's not hard to do something like the following:

This graphic was 2022 I believe, but the point is it's fanciful to suggest the profile just doesn't exist and start an argument from that position. I see the same sort of arguments in the Kane thread.
Well, why don’t you just tell me your preference names based on the graphic that you want to use rather than going circle criticising the argument because your criticism hasn’t conclude anything.

Genuinely, people keep saying Mount is only rated because he's English but the opposite is true. He only gets so much shit because he's English.

By the way, before anyone decides to make this post into something or not, I'm not making some weird EDL statement about how us fackin' Ingerlunders are the truly oppressed. All I'm saying is that a load of English fans have a weird desire to massively downplay/berate our own players.

Racks up goals against smaller-mid teams and has a good engine. I think he’s a good player, but not a game changer for United. Tuchel loved him at Chelsea, and he had a big part in them winning the CL. Don’t really see where he fits in a 4-2-3-1 with Bruno. I think you should move away from 4-2-3-1 and towards 4-3-3, but that’s another story.

I see the anti English mob are out in force again.

Mason Mount isn't a bad player at all. It's only the price that worries me with this one. I have seen enough of him at Chelsea to think he could definitely be a decent player for us. Not writing him off because of this season as Chelsea have been an absolute car crash.

Last few years he's been one of their best players.

What position do you see him playing?
Eriksen role?

He is not getting ahead of Bruno in CAM.

I really don't understand the need for Mount!

I have a feeling that we're just being used again to get a new contract but if Mount is really saying no all renewal attempts from Chelsea- this could be a transfer that gets done early.

Chelsea need to sell some players before June 31(I think, not 100% sure on exact date) so they can balance the books for the 2022-23 season for FFP. If they can't get other sales through in time for the amounts they need, selling Mount might be something they have to do.
They have been quoted asking unrealistic fees for most of their players linked for sale - like ~£25m for Loftus-Cheek from Italian clubs

You are correct about the date and FFP. If an acceptable offer came early, I think it gets done quick.

It was a a year or 2 ago. It's not what I believe, it's just an opinion.

They are nothing alike though, whether we are talking about 2 years ago or Modric from his Tottenham days. That opinion is fairly strange especially if it comes from an analyst.

All this interest in multiple players. It's starting to smell a lot like Jassim money lads

I’m surprised that people don’t seem to fancy this signing. If he can regain his 21/22 and 20/21 season, those xA would benefit us. We also desperately need to improve in that area.

I might have mixed the Modrić part but he did say Mount is a type of the player who usually doesn't come out of the youth system track in England.
He strikes me as an English version of Kovačić.

He is typically the type of attacking midfielder that come out of youth systems in England. A powerful attacking midfielder with decent technique and limited creativity or dribbling skills, he is basically a better version of Kevin Nolan.

I edited the post.

I edited the post.

He isn't a version of Kovacic either, he is no version of any player that is a high level technician. And it's an attacking midfielder that is subpar when played deeper.

None of the prominent English midfielders are anything like Modric though so he may well be the closest. Much like how a bicycle is closer to a Formula 1 car than a tub of ice cream.

70m for a squad player! No thanks. Reminds of someone Liverpool would sign before Klopp arrived.

Liverpool would sign Mount in a heartbeat imo, Klopp would turn him into a monster, I don't get some posters Liverpool won trophies with Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho in midfield and Mount is better than Henderson and Wijnaldum by quite a distance and we want to compete for those same trophies it's not like Mount is some abomination he is a good player who probably in his career has had one actual coach and he won the CL with him whilst being an integral member of the team

If the manager wants to sign a midfielder who can bag goals and assists and who can press like he does what's not to like I trust the manager to make the right call
