Should’ve just bought Maddison for £40m

So save 10-15 million to sign a worse player who can't play in position we appear to want to play Mount in, and in fact plays same position as our duracell bunny captain who barely misses a game?

I went looking for this £200m number that people have mentioned that Chelsea needs to sell to meet FFP. It does not exist. The Athletic ran an article before the transfer window saying that Chelsea could amass £200m in sales with their clear out. Then a bunch of other articles parroted that number. Swiss Ramble and several other pieces said we were close and I have seen that we need between £20m - £100m to be safe before June 30th, which has already happened. We have also reduced wages well over £100m. The last I read was Chelsea does not want to sign a player before July 1st so the books can be closed on FFP.

Barely worse (Mount is so average!) but yeh you're correct on position. Maddison would have been a good signing though just to add bodies in our squad. A bit like how City do.

So much for walking away!

Selling clubs just know that they will ultimately force United to pay the fee that they want them to pay.

Who said we’re paying what they want? We’re meeting to reaffirm our intentions of not paying what they want for him. The balls in their court, either accept the £55m or prepare to let him walk out the door for free next year.

You really think they will have a sit down so they can cross their arms and say, not going to budge!! They will find a compromise. I am all for taking the £55, but they will play with the numbers so everyone feels happy.

The structure of payment terms can be negotiated but I don't really believe we will pay more than £55m

We may negotiate how the deal is structured but I can’t see us budging much on the final price.

This is a fair compromise. Ultimately chelsea are trying to raise funds due to issues with their own massive and idiotic spending the last two windows. Offer more money up front and make the bonuses more attainable and it’s likely deal done.

We're not the ones that want the sit down though, it's you lot.

That really does not matter. Unless your transfer people have absolutely nothing to do during the busiest part of the transfer window, they must have some room to operate, or why bother?

If Chelsea are safe with FFP numbers up until June 30, then wouldn't it also make sense to not sell Mount before that?

It does, by most accounts we've made our position clear on the amount we're going to pay. Why would you bother to sit down during the busiest part of the transfer window when we've made our position pretty clear? If you're just going to come in to say "pay us more", why bother with that.

I have not read anything about that aspect? I imagine FFP rules are really only clear to lawyers that deal with it.

I'm all for getting Mount now - but the worst bit about it is that we're practically helping Chelsea ring out the red carpet for them to sign Caicedo.

The idea of a sit down is to compromise. Whether that is on price or structure, or both. I have said before, take the £55m and be done with it. Mount is not in our future plans.

I don't pretend to understand FFP calcs fully, but surely something has to give w/r to Chelsea's obscene spending? I dig your wages are down (mazeltov) but the sheer cash outlay has been staggering.

I personally don't see how we pay anymore, the structure - fine, but if you start from an unreasonable value, you can't at the end say, "come on, let's compromise, you're being unreasonable".

Regarding FFP, how are add-ons calculated in the figure over the contract? Only when they're paid out/conditions met?

I tell you what, feck the so-called gentlemen’s agreement that clubs have, get Mount to invoke the Webster ruling, buy-out the last year of his contract and give his a compensatory signing bonus.
First club who would sign player in that terms would be completely isolated by other clubs. Plus other clubs would (in revenge) try to steal their players in that way. And i wouldn't blame them. That rule is a nonsense.

That "gentlemen's agreement" is preventing clubs to lose millions and millions. It would be stupid for any club to use that rule (despite how desperate for certain player they are at that moment)

I mean if it makes you feel better, you can pretend Arsenal were the ones that rolled out the red carpet with the Havertz signing. Or maybe the Saudis.

People saying we are meeting just to ta;l about payment terms....I bet we sign Mount at a higher fee than our last offer, we shouldt even be meeting, should have been "here s our final offer which is rescinded in 3days, take it or leave it", all the power is in Chelseas hands, they dont have to sell him, can still try to talk him round and if they do decide to they can just come back to the offer we left on the table f we dont sign anybody else and accept it.

We are dragging things out just as we did last summer and we will end up overpaying and also not having enough time to get everything done we should be....there are a dozen players to move on let alone purchases and so far we have moved only Iqbal on for less than a million.

Things can change quickly but this is feeling like a famliar summer window after a successful season....if it continues in the same vein, Ten Hag will be under big pressure next season with the new owners in place

They made use of a loophole with signing players on insanely long contracts. That loophole just closed.

Selling to SA clubs at high prices probably helps too: Ziyech and Koulikabi.
