You can but as I said above it's not in his best interests.

Can see him signing a new deal if he's still here in September.
Why wouldn't it be in his best interests? If he wants out in a year he gets more money leaving on a free anyway. I don't see a team realistically benching a player for a year instead of accepting 50m.

Because right now he's getting the benefit of the doubt his form is a byproduct of the problems within the club.

Another poor season and he could effectively end up playing his way out of his next big contract.

You don't assume a player like him will continue being not good, especially if you are said player. If he stays next season then he'll play and I'm sure he'll work hard as always and if Chelsea sort themselves out a bit more than inevitably he will do better too. And then he'll be on a free at age 25. It's not a big deal at all for him to wait it out.

Chelsea have to look at it like essentially a 1 year loan deal for 50m if they are turning it down, because he's made it clear he doesn't want to extend.

All the talk about limited budged and paying 50-60M for Mason freaking Mount while we desperately need a striker and a keeper. I don't understand shit.

Not to a point, hence why he's still getting big offers from multiple clubs including both of ours despite the last 18 months, more the point if 18 months turns into 30 clubs will start going from "he'll be back" to "is this another Oscar/Dele Alli situation"?

One way or another, he's better off getting his next big contract this year.

Whichever way Mason Mount will be getting a big contract. If he stays at Chelsea next season and plays well, Chelsea are going to give him a contract otherwise they'd look like fools to lose a talented player on a free. He has built up enough credit for other top 6 teams to take a risk on him(free transfer) if he remains benched the entire season. If he doesn't play next year he is not going to get a 250k+ wages but he can make it up in signing on bonus.

Classic creative mc Kovacic is available for 25-30 mil. But we are going for attacking midfielder worth at least 60 mil.
It is easy to say "i trust Eth" but i don't understand this move

He is actually a player who is good both defensive and offensive. Very good at pressing as well. It makes sense to have someone who can let Casemiro stay deeper. For me it makes sense.

You think Kovacic would choose United over City at the moment? Hmm...

He's also 29. The age profile of our midfield needs to come down.

Fair enough if you don't rate Mount, but going for Kovacic is still not the answer. That's £30m you're still misusing.

Oh, i rate Mount. He is Man Utd quality. But i fear that he is not what we need. I hoped that we will go for classic mc, not advanced one. And as classic mc, Kovacic is a world class.

Maybe the people at Utd, not the athletic have a better idea of what our actual transfer budget and strategy are.

Ironically if the reports were we’d be buying him, everyone would slate it & say he’s too old and too expensive and should be paying £12M for him

It's funny how every player linked with united is world class. The same Mount that folks here call shit player, is now world class. Same as kova

Even after a bad season if we needed a number 10 Mason Mount would a good transfer. But if we are looking for an 8 or a dlp then it starts to look bad.

Don’t get why we didn’t try and sign Kovacic. Surely he’s more of a midfielder that we need. Would have been interesting to see it Chelsea would have sold him the same price as they are for city.

Unless you're name is EtH then maybe wait to see if we actually sign him, who else we sign, and how we set up with him in the team.

We won't know if it's bad or not until then.

Neither Kovacic is creative nor he is world class. He is a good ball carrier and good at pressing. But his creative side and also his defensive side is no where near good enough. The guy is also 29 with a year left on his contract so it makes sense if he’s going for 30m. We need Mount not Kovacic. I can see why Ten Hag wants to sign him.

Ten Hag changes players positions.

Mount won’t be the same player he was for Chelsea.

This. Classic feck up.

Mason, you’re a good guy but unfortunately nobody wants you here, we have other positions to fix

My guess is we'll be fine to sign a CM, ST and GK for roughly 50m each. Past that the window is unknown, but we are trying to do the 3 for 150m. Mount, Onana and Hojlund should be doable at that, and I'd be happy enough with that! We're obviously in a shit place with FFP and the ownership situation and significant holes in the squad, so we need to address the areas that will still let us build on last season and consolidate top 4.

ETH will "insist on" Mount in a few days in time for the next pointless update...

I guess we should close all the transfer threads if we aren't to discuss potential transfers.

Kovacic is city bound & Mount can/does play as an “8” - so the move is completely understandable.

What isn’t, is the price. Chelsea are having a laugh but it’s a player they clearly value and want to keep (& don’t want to really sell to a rival).

We really need to sell some players because like you say, CF & GK are another 2 key positions. Yikes :nervous:

So Bruno case and mount in midfield?
I don't think it's as simple as saying we're gonna play Case, Mount and Bruno as our midfield. Seems to me there's 3 reasons to bring in Mount:

1. ETH likes players who can play multiple roles/positions
2. ETH wants a balanced squad where there's 2 options for each position, meaning we need 6 midfielders in total. If one of McFred leaves this summer, we're only left with Case, Bruno, Eriksen and the remaining McFred. So we're gonna need Mount AND another midfielder (Rabiot on a free if his mother gets real about his package demands?)
3. We need to increase our Home Grown numbers if we assume Maguire, Henderson, Williams, and maybe McT leave

Kovacic and Havertz on the brink of being sold. Meanwhile over at United..
