I still think that him and Rabiot would be good midfield business this summer and if we can do it for 50m while selling Scott then even better. Won't be perfect but frees up funds for a goalkeeper and striker and hopefully a clear candidate for that playmaker role emerges by next summer.

Think a lot of people will be surprised at how much better we are under a press if we get someone like Onana in. Midfield could definitely be better too but for me that's our biggest issue when facing those teams.

Happy we seem to be setting a maximum price we'll pay for Mount and hopefully we'll nab him.

Do you remember a few years back when Alexis Sanchez was coming to the end of his contract at Arsenal and it became essentially a bidding war between United and City. Pep said something like, "We aren't as wealthy as United, we can't pay those wages" and he let it go. The world was shocked since Alexis was among the most in-demand forwards in the world at that time. Well, since then, City have paid reasonable fees for all of their players, nobody has quoted them ridiculous fees on players and they're the better for it. I think we need a few of those: where we say:, "Sorry, Todd, we can't afford that. We'll make do and see you next year when he's free". Would do wonders for our recruitment generally.
Agreed.

In the long-term, the best thing that could happen is the likes of Spurs and Chelsea set us unrealistic prices for players that only have a year left on their contract, we go off and spend the money we offered them elsewhere in other players that also strengthen us significantly, then in 12 months time Kane and Mount just join us for free. That would put us in a much stronger negotiating position going forward.

Of course, the key is we still have a successful season while we're waiting, so we need the 'other' players we sign to do well. Of course, that player might do well enough that we might not even want the original player anymore, but that's the kind of decision we want to be making. We do need to strengthen throughout the squad though so most likely we'd still be interested.

The risk is that the players we sign instead don't work out so we struggle for a season, or that when that player is available on a free he decides to go elsewhere instead. So it has potential pros and cons. But even if it doesn't work out it does draw a line in the sand to some extent to future clubs that we won't pay ridiculously over the odds.

It was a nice try but I respect that Chelsea want to keep him. We should absolutely respect that and leave them alone now. Mount will now know they value him highly and think he’s worth £70m

Stay Mount, they love you. You love them. Why leave?

Agreed.

I mean we done this with Perisic, Sancho, Fabregas and probably a load of other players I can’t think off.

I don’t think it works mate.

That's pretty good deal for all. Mount stays with us.

If mount still not renewed his contract in January and you still want him you can talk with him, can sign him for free during next summer window.

We get one more year of his service. All will be happy.

I think if Mount stays this season there is a realistic possibility that he signs a new contract at some point during the season. If Poch makes him feel valued and there's some progression in the team, they'll probably give him whatever wages he wants.

That's distant possibility. But he refused to sign new contract till now. Won't get much hope he will sign new contract with us.

He is the only player that performed consistently for us for our last three top 4 finishes. Losing him now not only wipe us his attacking outputs but left us with no experience in attack too.

Hope he stays with us at least this one more season.

I really hope we get him. We need a player like him that can be both defensive and attacking in midfield. He is very underrated on here, just like Michael Carrick.

I have to say what exactly are we waiting for? First bid was rejected a while ago and since then we're apparently just waiting to send in a second bid rather than trying to get it done swiftly, just doesn't make much sense to me

You want to just pay the 70 million asking price, then? That's what's going to happen if you call immediately with a higher bid every time an offer is "rejected".

Imagine going into the summer being desperate for a striker and goalkeeper and repeatedly finding out we don’t have the budget to sign the best ones and that our furthest along deal is £50-70m for Mason fecking Mount with a year on his contract.

Shambles, that is what it is. Hopefully, we improve the structure with the takeover.

Exactly! not sure why anyone would recommend the club to send a second bid straight away.

But then again, the transfer muppets just want to be fed.

Feels like a signing that just about sums up why we are in such a shambles. Massively overpaying for a player who is a minor upgrade at best with one year on his contract and giving the other club most likely to be challenging us for top four the money to buy an upgrade.

£80M on Maguire
£50M on Wan Bissaka
£60M on Mount

Seriously this is an abysmal use of transfer money.
nearly 200million

So then… what? We wait like 2/3 weeks of wasted time to put another bid in and get possibly rejected again? If they turn down the first bid we should put in the second one relatively soon after and say this is our last one, if they say no again then move on to the next target. It’s the wasting of time I don’t get, most clubs determine if they can do the deal or not then move on swiftly. Nothing to do with being a transfer muppet but that we get some actual players in for pre season like we couldn’t do last season because we did nothing but waste time then too

If boehly read this post he will demand 100mn for mount.

£50 is still expensive for one year. If Chelsea reject then happier to just wait or look elsewhere.

Take that rejected £50m offer and send it straight to Brighton or Southampton for their midfielders.

But nah we'll keep futile bidding on the profile of player we need least for the next month and not get any other business done in the mean time.

Agreed.

I could actually see him signing the contract if he's still with us in September.

Right now he's getting the benefit of the doubt the last 18 months is as much/more due to the situation at Chelsea than this, if he runs down his contract and has another poor season I imagine your interest suddenly stops and the figures we offer will become much lower.

So long story short, he'll be risking playing his way out of his next big contract if he lets this one run down.

I don’t see how signing a new contract with us is beneficial to either him or the club. With the players we currently have and with those that are on their way in he simply doesn’t have a place in our starting XI anymore. We’ll have Nkunku & Muddyk who will play on the left and Sterling & Madueke for the right side. Then there are rumors that we’ll bring in 2 new CM’s to play together with Enzo.

So to then pay £200k+ a week for Mount who will be on the bench more often than starting would be mad. And I highly doubt he’d sign up for that either. With no European football there will be much less rotation and therefore fewer minutes for rotation players.

It’s either go now or for free, imo. No new contract.

I doubt he'll sign a contract but if he's a £70 million player then lets see Chelsea pay him like one then.

We shouldn't budge any more than 50, that's already top end.

Waiting for Joel the cnut to give us permission to use our money on transfers as usual

Not a great weekend for our transfer targets in international football this week.

Mount couldn't get a game with England and O'Nana couldn't get one with Ireland.

I think if Chelsea manage to get >£70m for Havertz, I feel they’ll ease up on valuation for Mount.

Getting ~£120m for both, one of which is out of contract next summer would be a good deal.

I've only just seen this, news to me.

Won't be holding out for Chelsea to get desperate to sell.

Excellent planning by Chelsea. Setting price at 70m so that 50m will look like a good deal for a player in the last year of his contract. With the amount of players they are trying to offload and trying to sign we should be able to rinse them.

Not any more considering they'll make all that they need from selling to Saudi

They still have to get rid of players FFP or not. We can simple wait an year out.
You can but as I said above it's not in his best interests.

Can see him signing a new deal if he's still here in September.
