Better player in my opinion. Always completely baffled me Southgate showed him no faith yet loved Mount essentially doing what he did today..just standing in pockets.

Maddison impacts games more. He's a bit patchy in games but for quality of production I'd rather have him. Least he's effective when he's on the ball.

Definitely. I was championing us to get Maddison. It's mad that some didn't rate him.

I think longterm he'll still be a good signing for us but the type of player he is wasn't the priority this summer and that's annoying thing.

Who knows, that could have just been a commercial decision as he's very sellable. Or he just asked for it and Ten Hag couldn't care less as it's just a shirt number.

We just don't know.

I hope so mate, because our chances of making the cl spots with this shambles of midfield is not looking great.

He made 14 passes in 103 minutes

edit: 85 minutes I forgot he was subbed.
Eriksen attempted the same number of passes today as Mount.

Except, y'know, in 35 minutes compared to 85.

This has to be the most baffling signing we've ever made. We basically did Chelsea a massive FFP favour.

He's not a central midfielder.

Marcus Rashford is not a striker.
Boggles the mind that we have signed him to play central midfield isn't it? He was our no.1 priority signing this summer and we spunked 55m on him and are now trying our best to convert him to be a central midfielder. Twice now we have been completely outplayed in midfield. How many games does Ten Hag intend to stick to this awful plan of playing Bruno and mount together and let Casemiro alone in midfield to wing it out himself?

Marcus Rashford is not a striker.

What is he?

I've watched him for years for Chelsea, England, and now United.

Still no clue at what he actually is? What am I seeing now is what I have always saw from him. He looks like he's playing about at his level. Unfortunately for us, the level is "shite".

He needs to play more deep and from there look to make runs forward. Not stay high up and then occasionally drop deep, he just wouldn't get enough involvement that way.

His use should be a utility-attacking midfielder. Second, he can be number 2 to Bruno. Keep them apart in game unless we are already winning a game and bring him on. I think Ten Hag is smart enough to learn and make changes.

I said in another thread but we gave Ten Hag the first 2 matches last season to accept that playing out from the back with De Gea doesn't work.

He's had 2 matches now, thankfully we have 3 points. I now think he has to put Eriksen or McTominay in for Mount. If not and we lose or even play terribly then things get a bit serious.

He's an alright player but he absolutely wasn't a priority for us this summer. The worst thing was that he was free next summer and it would have been the perfect time to get him.

Why we needed to spunk 50 million this summer and help Chelsea dodge FFP, i'll never know.

His metrics are obviously very good, there was a lot of interest in him, but can’t help but think last season is just his actual level.

Yep I think this is going to end up being his role. Look having Mount in the squad isn't going to be a negative. Just seems the role Ten Hag is playing him isn't going to be the one.

So so so anonymous. He makes decent runs, takes up decent positions but has zero affect on play. I haven’t seen him do anything worth doing since he signed. His most notable moment was missing that sitter at OT.

Think Ward-Prowse would have suited us more with our current squad than Mount
I'm thinking of Maddison as a worthy backup or (long-term) replacement for Bruno, not as Eriksen's replacement. And yeah, we still need that high pass volume deeper midfielder.

His brother will show up in this thread soon defending him, because he's a nice person y'know

I’m going early on this like I did with Maguire.

He ain’t it chief. He’ll become a squad player eventually which will be fine. I’m not one for squad numbers but him being our no.7 is actually pissing me off.

Good point actually, hopefully he's not stubborn enough to insist with a mistake of his.

Madisson won't be a replacement for Bruno. He isn't that good.

Play Mount as a 10 with solid midfielders in behind he will thrive too.

But somehow we have bought him to play 8 bizarrely.

He’s an awful signing. He’ll be one of ETH’s biggest mistakes. WTF was he thinking going all out for MM?

The system is a bit complicated and will take a while to bed in. It’s not as simple as your post makes out. In this system, the full backs and the CBs are supposed to step into midfield half the time but it’s carnage while they are learning how and when to do it. It needs drilling for weeks and weeks.

And they went and bought the player we should've put all our energy into, does it get any more stupid?

The Dele regression.

Might be a bit harsh that given what Ali talked about a few weeks back.

Would have cost a ton. We could have had Branco on a free and he'd be spectacular.
Ward-Prowse would have cost a ton? He was sold to West Ham for half of what Mount cost. Don't think they're very similar players or that JWP would be a good fit.

A player who was bought off a spreadsheet… simple as that.

“look at how many sprints in the final thirds he makes!”

“he is in the top 5 percentile for defensive press in the top 5 leagues!”

what happened to just buying players who are clearly good by the eye.

You don’t need a statistical genius to tell you that Scholes or modric or xavi were great midfielders…

In the exact same way that anyone with eyes and half a brain could have told you that our squad was far more in need of a caceido or tonale type of player this summer.

awful judgement

His lack of involvement is quite worrying, especially as ten Hag said he wants him to play deeper. However, 17 passes in 84 minutes suggests this is a player who, as I mentioned before, isn't getting on the ball. To put this into perspective, Erisken, who came on in the 65th minute, made he same number of passes today.

At the moment, I'm just not sure what role ten Hag is asking him to play, but going forward, I think in order to get the best from Mount, we need to push him on as the highest midfielder, where he can use his intelligent runs to get on the end of things.

I disagreed with both points. But it's just observation.

Yeah I'm hoping the plan comes clear for what mount will be doing for us. Just would've rather done amrabat and someone like kone instead for the same price

Put Tonali in his place and we look a million miles better unfortunately.

I don't have a clue how we solve the problem either as he's not going to get dropped any time soon, so we need him desperately to adapt somehow. We keep hearing how he's a great coaches player so hopefully it's something he can learn quickly.
