Mason Greenwood

He's an amazing talent indeed, miles better than Rashford. If LVG was still around, this boy would be playing 1st team football this season or next one. it seems that our academy is now producing good talents again, Nicky Butt doing a good job.

I'd go further and say that academies all around the country are! The U17's to U20's have been sensational the last few years; seems England has finally got a structure in place that works! An aengland team in 5 years with prime talents like Foden, Sancho, Greenwood etc is very exciting

Pretty sure he said Mason will be the 19th man so he won't be in the matchday squad unless someone has to pull out.

Ah shit, haven't watched the presser, just seen the news on the squad who traveled to Valencia. Hope he gets his chance this season somewhere.

Martial and Sanchez are injured, Rashford and Lingard played a lot in the last matches and definitely need some rest prior to Sunday game. And still no Greenwood?!

Its a joke. I would happily play him vs Young Boys.

Let Lukaku stink up the first half and bring him on in the second.

We're playing Valencia mate, hopefully Greenwood gets gametime either way but I can't see it personally. Lukaku, Mata and maybe Pereira are likely to start tonight in attack with Fred, McTominay and Pogba in CM.

This is what annoys me about Jose. This is effectively a meaningless game and a great chance to start Greenwood and Garner.

It really is a win in many regards:
- Garber and Greenwood get a deserved chance in the seniors
- We can rest more players for the weekend
- the fans get a much needed boost after a s*?* season
- Jose earns some brownie points with the fans, by finally showing he gets the united way (or at least our principle of promoting youth)
- it could lead to extra competition for the squad, something that is needed given the poor standards encroaching on the 1st team

Instead, it seems he will give game time to those that don't deserve or need it.

I wouldnt be suprised if Matic still gets to play 90 minutes... fully expecting it even.

My god, United have broke me to the point I don't even know who we're playing

I don't think he traveled to Spain with the rest of team.

Really? In that case José is going wild tonight! I dont even know what to expect anymore now.

Pogba, Fred, Pereira midfield? That could be fun to watch! A Pogba, Fred, Felleini is more likely though

Be a good experience for him even if he doesn't get minutes, but I think we'd be daft not too.

Give Lukaku 60/70 mins to try and score and boost his confidence then get Greenwood on.

Exactly what I'm thinking about it. To give 90 mins for senior players and then to complain that Liverpool had 1 extra preparation day.

I'm hoping Greenwood will be on the bench but by Mourinhos comment I don't think he will. If he doesn't then I hope he does play Pereira, Fred and Pogba in CM, at least it'd give us a glimpse of what an attacking midfield looks like.

I don't blame you mate, feels to me like we're 3/4 through the same, we're only just 1/2 way there

Would love Mason to get a few minutes tonight but then I remember he's still a kid and 17 year olds (just turned) are VERY rarely given first team opportunities these day! Just being around the squad and training with them tells me he (and Garner) are very highly rated by management! Patience

Valencia are going to have an 18 year old Ferran Torres playing tonight because it's a great chance to give him some minutes and rest others ahead of more important league games at the weekend.. Don't see any reason why we are not playing Greenwood

That's a pretty idealistic view and it rarely all happens that way. It would be fair to see one or two of the lads get a few minutes at the end. But we really should be finishing the group stages strong. It's not exactly like we've wowed in the competition of late...best to show some respect til we become a regular sight again .

Clubs giving talented youngsters a proper chance in dead rubbers is quite common. Why couldn’t we do it?
And i’m not sure Garner and Greenwood in the starting 11 would make us look worse than we’ve done for many games this season.

Its one thing to give them a start but another for that list of things to fall in place. Like squad competition and brownie points with fans. That's all a bit much.

If any of them have been playing well , ok, give em a shot in the team. But don't hang your hat on it somehow lighting this place up. For me, we have other players coming back from injury or bad form that need match time. We'd be better off starting them and bringing kids on for a cameo later

Agree.
As much I'd like to see Greenwood ,and others get minutes on the field with the first team, the fact is ,as you say, we need our first team members to get as much confidence as possible.More so with a big game coming up against Liverpool on the horizon.

Greenwood and Garner are getting vital experience. They're mixing with the first team and travelling away for a senior champions League tie.
You cannot rush these things.Slow thought out progress and common sense is needed in these circumstances.

Hope to see Greenwood get 20-30min today.
Anything less will be a disappointment for me,i think he really deserves a chance here and we are already qualified so play him.

Who are these players coming back from injury or in bad form that should be starting ahead of Greenwood?

The only players I can think of would probably benefit much more from a rest than they would playing a meaningless midweek friendly.

I'd be incredibly surprised if he does. Would be nice, but can't see it under Jose.
Be surprised if we saw it under anyone manager with any sense.
The only reason we saw countless youth start under LVG was because of his rubbish training methods with the first team players constantly getting injured.

I know we have a strong connection in bringing through youth but, crikey, can people just be abit patient.

This isn't as meaningless a game as people keep harping on about.
We could go top tonight if things pan out for us.
What a arrogant viewpoint to have to think we can be above such circumstances, especially nowadays. This is a big competitive game in the CL against one of Spains biggest clubs.
Treat Valencia with respect, both sets of fans and the competition.

It sounds like Valencia a playing a weakened side also to invest in youth, while its a stretch to imagine Juve dropping points against the guaranteed wodden spoon.

Great chance to play youth, excite the fans and give our underperforming 1st teamers a kick up the arrse.

Both teams are resting players, I’m sure Juventus will be as well. It’s not arrogance in the slightest from Utd, these two games tonight mean very little to any of the teams in the group. It has nothing of significance riding on it, so no it’s a big competitive game at all.

Very much with what Brian's saying below. I'm not one to treat this as a friendly.

From our midfielders and forwards I'd have said Martial, but looks like he's not in the squad at all. I'd love to see Pereira get some time. But we do have to be realistic here - who's Jose going to rely on more in the coming months? Greenwood or Fellaini or McTominay? I think he'll lean towards keeping those Mainstays fresh by starting them and subbing on Greenwood . It'd be great to see otherwise but that's the more conservative approach

Exactly.

Plus the heat is really on Jose, if we get slapped tonight it’s only going to increase the pressure.

If he's rested players and played kids I doubt he will get much blow back especially as we have already qualified.

If we lose tonight I'm certain that the people who want Jose out ASAP wont see this as a 'meaningless game'.;)

Anyway,I expect a strong side out tonight and its a game i'm generally looking forward too.
The Mestalla is one of my favourite grounds in Spain and can generate a fantastic atmosphere in games such as these.

It ain't arrogance, it's more knowing that we will likely be out the next round regardless of 1st or 2nd in the group. Greenwood has earned the chance through his performances with the youth teams. Doesn't mean that we are obliged to start him against Liverpool. If LVG had never given Rashford the chance then we likely wouldn't have found out that he was ready at that time.

Exactly.

This is Woodward we are talking about, the heat is on when we can't reach top 4. It's up to how shite Jose really is to determine when that is.

If we win 5-0, I'd still want Jose out personally. If you're not a fan of the manager one game shouldn't have a major impact. Likewise if you want Jose out and you end up judging him based on a game that he rests players ahead of the Liverpool match then you are ridiculous.

Actually, didn’t know finishing top was up for grabs (show how un-invested I am in the team these days!) In that case we should play as strong a team as possible. May as well give the CL our best effort. Our chances of winning the league are already long gone. So I agree, no need to play Greenwood.

Thing is it's very dependant on the Juventus - Young Boys result and we've got an eye on the Liverpool game at the moment so it's probably for the best if we rest the guaranteed starters of that match.
