Mason Greenwood | Officially a Marseille player

The one thing that this thread has thought me, and reading all the posts on social media with regards to Joey Barton and his opinions on women, is that I'm shocked at the amount of men out there who really don't give a shite about women, that they will find any excuse to defend the man in situations like this one with Greenwood. I mean is there really that many men out there that hate women that much?

It's utterly depressing.

I went to a United women's game last year and became very positive about these things. Young girls with their mums and dads watching their new red shirted heroes. Openly trans men and women watching the match in a safe space (sorry for the triggers right wing c**s) and just a nice atmosphere. My 8 year old cousin loved it.

This thread and Barton outing himself as an even bigger c**t (amongst many others) have made me question the way in which society is going.

Society is going in a grim direction.

Yep completely agree, society is in the toilet these days and it's very depressing.

Nobody who would want him has the kinda money to buy him now.

Who would you suggest would want him?

And realistically how much would we want for him given the situation in the UK. He's going to struggle to come back to England in my opinion.

I was thinking the same thing earlier this week. Noticed a much older mate had posted his support of Barton's rant on Facebook. Sure enough, plenty of other blokes chipped in in favour. Pi55ed me off. He's old school for sure, but I didn't expect that to be his take on it.

There have been rumours of bigger clubs to be fair.

I don't follow Spanish football so don't know how well he's playing to be fair but I'd hope he was playing well enough to be putting himself in the shop window.

There's only a couple of clubs in Spain who could afford £30 plus million and they're absolutely not going to be interested in Greenwood for that kinda money.

It is utterly depressing seeing the nonsense of Barton and such like being supported.

But there’s a hell of a lot of people who are disgusted by the actions. Enough to get him banned from the club. So let’s not lose all perspective!

A club that rarely ever spend more than €15-18M in a window. He's going to be worth more than that if bigger clubs become interested.

That's why I said they could not afford him.

In Spain at the moment, who can pay £30+ mil? Barca are utterly skint. Atletico have not spent more than £30 mil on a player since Felix years ago and are they really going to break the bank for Mason Greenwood?

I think yourself and a few others on here with similar rhetoric are slightly misrepresenting a lot of posters. Just because some posters on here don't align with your view that Greenwood should never be allowed back at United does not equate to suddenly they all support domestic abuse, follow Joey Barton or any of the other exaggerations you and a few others are claiming. Is his partner who got back with him part of this crumbling society? her parents? his parents? There is a lot of ground between someone saying that they are fine with him coming back or they'll accept United's decision to bring him back and suddenly being a cheerleader for domestic violence. Although your views does trend with everything having to be black/white, Left/Right, Them/Us, when in reality people can take up a multitude of postions along the spectrum that can not align with your view and at the same time not align with the views of someone supporting DV. And no people for the most part having discussions on here about Mason isnt a sign of a "decay in society" or whatever exaggeration people want to make.

He'll be sold for a lot less than many here think. There's barely a market for him.

Barca have just signed a player for €40 million. If Utd are willing to leave him go for £30 million they’ll be plenty of foreign clubs looking to snap him up for that price

I guess we'll see. I think he'll go for a smaller fee in the summer with a whopping big % sell on clause.
I think a sell on clause will be depending on who buys. If its Sevilla or someone (who don't have the 30-40m to spend so it won't be them), sell on clause fine. Barca or someone like that, there's not much point in a sell on cause he'll either succeed there or fail and be sold for even less than he came for. I think we will sell him to a big Spanish team, i.e. Barca/Real, in summer for 40m.

So, by that logic Everton were wrong to get shot of Sigurdson (or whatever his name was) for having child porn on his computer. Looney tunes
You're missing the point. If we are discussing Sigurdson as a football player it has nothing to do with his misdeeds. Same way, I can have a discussion about Kobe or Tyson without mentioning the rape accusations. It's not a difficult concept.

But we heard his voice saying what he said, that's very different from Kobe and Tyson

It’s really not different, imagine you’re an Everton fan watching your team play with someone accused of peado crimes. There’s no way you can put that aside and just think of him as a footballer. No way. There’s something coldly wrong with you if you can seperate that

What I don't understand about this situation is: if he didn't do what he was accused of, why did he get back with his partner? That would be getting back with someone who has wrecked your career. If this is the case, then he at least must feel that he's done something to deserve that treatment? If he feels it was undeserved, he'd surely be out of there? His statement said something like he didn't commit the offences but admits wrongdoing. What kind of wrongdoing could be so bad that he feels he deserved to have his career destroyed and is content to stay with his partner?

And if he did do the thing he was accused of, the kindest thing to do would be to stay out of his partner's life, rather than what happened next.

I don't understand why them being together now has made some people think it's all rosey and he should return to United. Whether you think he did it or not, them being together raises some really dark questions.

Not wanting him to play for the club because he's despicable and discussing him strictly as a footballer are two separate things. I can say "what a great footballer but an absolutely horrible human being". This happens all the time in the sports. We can acknowledge our moral compasses without injecting them into every discussion.

But we heard his voice saying what he said, that's very different from Kobe and Tyson
And again, I'm not that interested in discussing his innocence or guilt. If he's guilty, he should be convicted and deserves whatever horrible happens to his football career. Full stop.

Other than that, any discussion about him that isn't football-related isn't particularly interesting to me. If you think he's guilty, cool. If not, cool. I get nothing out of defending or criticizing Greenwood.

I am interested in his football because I want as much money as possible for him, then I want to never hear anything about him again

Yep completely agree, society is in the toilet these days and it's very depressing.

“These days”, when society is more accepting than ever before in history?

Not sure which rosey days you are looking back to? The days being gay was frowned upon? The days of Sean Connery and his “give em a little slap”? The apartheid days? The World Wars days? Queen Vic? Napolean?

Or in fact, for 99% of human history where people would barely blink twice at a man hitting his missus?
“These days” society is better than ever, but not all people think the same, never have, never will, and society certainly isn’t down the toilet due to that.

This place has always been moderated with a very light touch IMHO. There aren't many places on the Internet these days where you can cordially agree to disagree. May I suggest we have a separate thread to follow and discuss Greenwood's football-related performances? Don't think this club needs even more division at this stage.

I wish I could say the same, both online and in person most people I know want him back. Its a position I can't understand, especially coming from lads with daughters of their own, but unfortunately I'm hearing it more and more, (probably to do with how poor we've been to be fair, people will jump at any chance of us being better, no matter the moral cost)

If it was just online I could put it down to trolls, and fans that don't understand the values this club was built on, but instead I've spoke to loads of lifelong local fans that want him back. In fact I'd say here on redcafe, is the main place I've seen that is probably 80/20 in terms of not wanting him back.

Agree with the premise, but this forum’s poll results are no where near 80% who definitely don’t want him back.

If you then control for the motivations to vote for such a poll, you’re likely looking at a much more mixed picture.

Which reflects the situation in the seats around me on match day.

There was one and clowns kept derailing it so they closed it

I suggest "Mason Greenwood | Accused Rapist | Performace Discussion". Who loses?

That's a strange course of action to take. No wonder some on here feel like there's some moral lecture / crusade going on.

Anyway, MG looks like he'd take Rashy's spot in an instant in this match highlights video:

More intelligence and better passing. Would be fun to watch him and Garnacho switch up.

The time period between Vietnam and Facebook, obviously.

That's actually a fair representation of how ridiculous this thread is right now.

We need a Loan Watch thread like we usually do for our players.

Meantime, if there's little will to discuss football in this thread, it'd make more sense to move this to the general forum and rename it accordingly.

Apparently, Mason Greenwood is a special case. His transgression has to be discussed with his football ability, or randoms might think the Caf condones his alleged actions.
