He was still decent, but I didn't think he really stood out like he did against Cardiff and Perth. Got the goal that he needed though, so hopefully that's the start of him putting more of those chances away.
Yep, look at the 2 instances he takes on the defender with some step overs and narrowly hits the side netting - Lukaku would try that and fall over or over run the ball and lose it. He wouldn't make that run for the goal Greenwood scores either, he's just too static.

When he is 1v1 with defender, more often than not, he beats the defender and takes the shot. It's hard to stop him as he can go either way and still shoot with good precision.

Greenwood's numbers from the youth formations indiate that he is a big talent but to tell what he can do better than Lukaku or Mata or Lingard on the basis of 3 meaningless games agains championship teams is jumping to conclusions. I'm quite sure that Mata, Lingard and Lukaku are still more likely to contribute in games against PL opposition. He'd do really well to have 10-15 starts in the league next season. He's turning 18 in 3 months. It seems that a lot of people exepect more from him than they did from Ronaldo in 2003 when he was 18 y.o.

So why don't they do it against easier opposition also? your theory doesn't add up.

We shall see what he does against Milan / Tottenham, that'll be a good point to judge.

That's a really daft question. Lukaku was bought for 75m for a reason, he scored 26 league goals with Everton. Mata was twice Chelsea's player of the season and had good performances at United. To comparae Mata/Lingard and Greenwood on the basis of meaningless friendlies or the meaningless Cardiff game isn't clever.

I don't care if Lukaku solved world peace before he joined us, he hasn't done it FOR us.

Mata is a good player but limited these days. Greenwood is the future.

Yeah that's always been his strength. Defenders can't show him one way at all. He can go either way easily and get a shot away quickly.

His accuracy is damn good as well.

He most probably is and this is wonderful, as I said his numbers indicate a huge talent, but he hasn't proved yet that he is already a better option in the starting XI than those players. He might well be, all I'm saying is that friendlies are not a good basis to judge a player.

I'm hearing City fans were more impressed with some of their youngsters yesterday than with Rodri, means feck all though. Rodri will probably start most games and they will play in the youth formations. Friendlies are not a good criterion.

Personally, I don't expect Ole to start with Greenwood vs Chelsea even if he scores a hat-trick in some of the next friendlies. Might be mistaken though, Ole sees him in training every day.

Yeah I agree he probably won't start purely because it's a huge game and we might need more experience to begin with, but he definitely has the talent and ability.

He will more than likely come from the bench, but right now what other play looks good enough to play RW? It'll probably be the safe route of Mata/Lingard.

Even opposition fans admit it, he looks incredibly promising and already looks like a star. Maybe we shouldn't place too big expectations on his shoulders yet, time is on his side. Only 17!

The right wing position looks like it's his for the taking. He's the only one of our attacking players who seems to be able to play close to his best level in that position.

I like his relationship with Rashford there too. He still tends to spend a lot of time at centre forward, often switching with Rashford. I think his colleagues respect his ability so much that they want him in goalscoring positions as often as possible.

I have to admit i'm also really excited about this guy. He has bags of ability and more importantly seems to play without fear.
I think Ole is the perfect coach for him atm, a guy like Mourinho wouldn't have trustet him as much i assume.

What a boost for the whole fanbase it would be if Greenwood runs the show upfront together with the likes of Rashford, Martial and James.
This could be so exciting:drool:

Yep I noticed this, they seem to interchange really well.

Interestingly we seem to be happy to leave him up top even when defending also. He didn't track back a huge amount but stayed up top to counter with Rashford.

I guess the addition with AWB helps us do this.

Can you imagine that, Jose would have him tracking fullbacks against Huddersfield and Cardiff

Ole could do what Ferguson did and start the season with younger players and slowly bring the more experienced players into the fold after the first international break. It will save old legs and also make the younger players feel part of the squad.

Anyone else remembers tone of JM towards our youngsters in preseason last year, it was like, i had to bring them, no choice, gonna use them as proof of signings being needed etc. gee what a cnut.

Well it makes sense because James has such insane pace he can steam up there to support a counter from anywhere on the pitch whereas Rashford and Greenwood are lethal when they're isolated against defenders. Nobody is going to send all their defenders forward with Rashford and Greenwood hanging around in their half.

Can see him getting plenty of game time on the right this season. Really hope Ole gives him and Gomes plenty of chances this season. Developing terrific and exiting young talent can make a top 4 chasing season much more exciting than it otherwise would be.

Yep, it's pretty much what caused Rashfords goal.

They stayed up and got a 2v2 encounter.

Would love to see them both become a key part of our playing XI. Greenwood is already our best option on the RW ahead of Mata and Lingard. Gomes could thrive as a No.10. He has better technique and vision than most of our first team players. Pogba should play in a 2-man midfield this season so that we can get the best out of Gomes and hopefully Bruno if we can manage to sign him.

Chong and Garner are more likely to be involved in the EL and domestic cups as I think they are not yet ready for the first team yet.

Yeah and after the first bad performance he wouldn't have seen the field for a few weeks/months.

I think Ole's telling him to play with confidence and freedom to try things. And will not lynch him after a missed sitter. That's exactly what he needs at this stage.

Rashford on the other side for example, i can imagine Ole raising the expectations on him this season.

To be fair to Mourinho, he brought Greenwood on tour last summer when he was 16. That's ridiculously young and he hadn't even had his break out as a youth player really but Mourinho saw the talent there clearly, as he doesn't just bring random 16 year olds on tours and actually give them game time. He probably wouldn't have used him at all last season, but that doesn't mean that he didn't recognize what an enormous talent Greenwood is. If anything, Mourinho bringing him as a 16 year old on tour speaks volumes about just how special he is.

Blessed to have him and Rashford at the same time.
It's one of those things where we think that the bulk of our attack is sorted out for the next 10 years, especially taking into account Gomes/Chong/James/Martial, you'd expect at least one of those to make it and complete a trio. Or sign Sancho and not need an attacker for 8-9 years. Never ends up working like that but injuries permitting it does feel like a crazy promising group of young players we have in the attack (and defensively tbf). The midfields lagging behind, though Garner is rated highly, but his type of player generally takes longer to break through.

I think having him in the first team is going to indirectly make Rashford a better player. There's now two academy grads directly competing for that central striker position and Rashford needs to up his game if he wants to retain it.

Incredible when you think about it, really. Can you imagine how much they'd cost if we bought them from other clubs? Yet we get them fresh out of the youth teams, which is about as "United culture" as it gets. Despite all our deficiencies there's a lot to be excited about as a United fan; Pogba, McTominay, Rashford, Lingard, both Pereiras, Gomes, Garner, Greenwood, Tuanzebe and Chong are all from the academy and all have the potential to be involved in the first team (in some capacity) next season, basically half are squad could be from the academy.

He's still 17 and will have his ups and downs. I know this kid very well and I hope he's used as back up and not thrown straight into first team, eventhough it would make me and his family very happy.

I think he should be used as a impact sub until he shows he's ready to start games for us which hopefully won't take too long.

You know him and his family personally?

Yes. He's from Bradford which is next to my home town Huddersfield. United picked him up from Huddersfield believe or not when they were running a developmental centre for young players. Mason was about 6 at the time.

Do you think he has the mentality to take the next step up?

What more in your opinion can he improve on except experience and age related developments?

I haven’t seen enough to know what kind of player he is but IYO what is his ceiling talent wise?

He's mentally a very tough kid and does take criticism on the chin. His Dad has really pushed him in the last 4 years to help him get to where he is. Mason has even played sunday league against some right hatchet men who only turned up to hurt players because his Dad insisted he get accustomed to the physicality of the mens game. Mason was even made to rewatch his performance against Cardiff and was told what he did wrong in snatching at the chances that came his way by his Dad and he took the criticism on board in a very humble way.

I don't want to go overboard by making a silly prediction about his future progression. But we're all very optimistic that he could cement his place as United's undisputed #9 in a few years. What he does beyond that will depend entirely on himself, because his Dad can only do so much. But the signs are very good right now.

He’s very quick when he does that move with a couple of stepovers on the right, cuts inside and takes a shot at goal. It’s becoming his signature move, abit like what Robben likes to do and was so good at it. You could see it coming but you can’t really stop him. Ole is also convinced he’ll become a very good player in his own words

Can’t wait to see more of this kid. Followed him the last year he is amazing. So cliche to say but from what I’ve seen he’s nailed on to be a star. It’s just completely effortless with what he does.

Really like what I have seen of him so far, hopefully he gets a lot of game time this year.

Seeing promising youngsters develop is always nice, and he seems to be super talented and technical.

It's great that he's so two footed, should be able to play anywhere across the front line.

Given Rashfords age and Greenwoods age, I think it's far likelier hes either a right inside forward for a while as he develops, or we switch to a 2 striker system. In 4 years Greenwood will be 21 while Rashford will be 25, right in his prime. You never know how it turns out, and long term definitely think Greenwood will be the #9 (provided his mentality stays good and stays injury free), but given the balance of the squad/need in certain positions, I think he's heading for the right wing for the near future. Can't see Rashford being moved back to the left in the short term tbh. Not a bad problem to have though!
