What makes everyone adamant he’ll be a star? Have I missed something?

Because he's amazing at U18 level and they're desperate for something to cheer about tbf.

He has been the stand out player on the pitch at every level he has started at to be fair. Granted the sample size for the PL is small, but its still not an untrue sentence

I'm not sure about that. He's certainly done well for his age at U23 level but I don't think it's right to call him the stand out player on the pitch. Not even sure he was the stand out for his own team. I'm not trying to shit on him here, not fair to judge anyone in Sbragia's team anyway, just saying I don't think he's ready to shine for the first team just yet. I'd be delighted if he got 10 starts this year as it would mean he's kicking on.

He looked like he could be a very good player vs Cardiff

I reckon he can get that in the EL alone if Ole is truthful to his word about playing mostly youngsters in Europe this season.

The youngsters will get a go, absolutely, but I would think that a fair few seniors get starts as well, EL is a viable route into the CL and that is what Ed and the board will be asking of him.

If the game he had there is anything to go by and lets say that might be a usual performance from him at that level, then we can expect him to become some what of a regular this season, considering the lack of signings. It is certainly the most impressive and promising performance from a youth prospect at the club I've seen in quite a few years, really.

Some players have just look like they have everything from a very young age and so long as they stay fit and their mentality doesn't go down the drain (biggest question with young players), they'll become top players. Greenwood for me definitely looks like a future star.

From what I’ve seen of this kid he looks the real deal, thought he was great against Cardiff, ok so he missed a few chances but he applied himself really well and but for what was probably a bit of nerves he would of got himself a goal and I reckon if he gets a decent crack at the first team once he gets that first goal those nerves will soon fade away.

He’s the one positive thing that could come out of the negativity currently surrounding the club which feels a bit ridiculous to say about a 17 year old kid at a club of our size but it’s where we’re at right now unfortunately.

He's the best talent we've had at the academy since Ravel.
If he doesn't make it here (injuries permitting course), we might as well shut down the academy. Yes he's that good.

I've been reading the caf since Welbeck was breaking out as a teenager, and I've always got the vibe that academy kids are ridiculously overrated here before they actually break through to the first team. Whether it's Welbeck, Januzaj, Wilson, TFM or even Bortwick Jackson (I do recall some hype around him at left back under LVG). I want to see how he performs in the first team before placing any expectation on him.

Every youth player seems to have a fan club on here. Mason is the real deal though.

I haven't seen any of him apart from his brief appearances for the first XI last year (none of which I found impressive but he didn't play enough to form any judgement + the team was generally shite). Hopefully you're right though.

Fair enough. That explains why you dont know. You're in for an absolute treat.

What's his shooting/finishing normally like?
He's deadly with both feet. Check out the recent training video from the tour.

There is a sequence where AWB wins the ball with a great tackle on Mata, somebody off camera passes the ball to Greenwood and he smoothly slots the ball in the bottom left corner with about 2 touches on the ball. The lad has some serious talent.

Thanks. I've not watched him that much and missed the last game of the season against Cardiff. I know I can't judge him off one game, but he didn't seem to connect with a lot of his shots from watching the highlights in the game.

I’ve never followed the academy, but since he was hyped up from the season before, I caught 5 games this season just to watch him. Imo he stands out massively from every other player, because he seems to be the full package. His hattrick v Chelsea (Desember I think), was indicative of him. Very calm and collected in decisive moments. From the (very limited, granted) games I saw, his failure to convert the chances v Cardiff (chances he very much fashioned himself, I might add) was completely out of character.

Regarding the comment about 20 games, I honestly think that would be a fantastic first season. Something like 5-10 starts and 10-15 sub appearances (no cameos) is reasonable. No point putting so much pressure on his shoulders. If he plays beyond expectation, of course more games could be expected. It will be very important not to play him too much and/or through injuries - we are already doing that with Rashford.

Do you have a link to this? I checked on youtube but all I can find is them stretching

The club put it on Twitter to showcase Wan-Bissaka's tackling but Greenwood is just as impressive in my opinion. :D

Might sound daft but I'd take no RW signing happily if it meant Greenwood was our starting RW, with Lingard / Dalot as rotating cover.

He's just ridicously talented. Although I think he should be good enough to take the #9 eventually, a season or two at RW in an Interchangeable front three would, in my opinion, be good for his development and potentially fantastic for us as a team.

Far better finisher than Rashford, seems to have a better mentality than Martial. Maybe the young kid outperforming them could give the kick up the backside needed?

Martial Rash Greenwood could be a special front 3 imo.

His game against Cardiff reminded me of C.Ronaldo. He has an obsession with getting directly at goal whether it be dribbling or constantly moving in the box off the ball.

Whatever it is - that brilliant psychopathic obsessive drive to score/assist that Ronaldo has - Mason has too.

He just happens to have some talent to go with it too. I’ll be very very surprised if he doesn’t become a top class attacker.

What was that record he broke against Cardiff? It was mind boggling how much more he created for himself than any of our attacking players through the season - all in one game.

Agreed.

If Martial can improve his attitude & Rashford can gain a bit of composure, along with Greenwood settling into the side I think it can be up there with Liverpool & Citys attacks. Lots of if's and but's there of course, who knows.

Fingers crossed ey.

People are jumping the gun here, fantastic talent but more likely gonna get cups and the Europa league games.

I'd say 10 appearances and he's a happy lad.

Every time I sit and worry about goals this season, I remember that we have this ace up our sleeves.

It would surprise me not one bit if Greenwood had the kind of season the likes of Owen or Rashford had at 18 and became one of the better forwards in the land. He’s a freak of a talent and shouldn’t be judged the same as other promising players his age.

I'm not sure jumping the gun is the right answer, IMO he's ready to be a starting player in the league.

I feel the club will purposely drip him in slowly and be very cautious with him. He's still very young and I think we've made errors giving young players too much too soon.

He is insanely talented though, and as @WR10 says above he just has a natural instinct and desire to score goals. He moves in the box like a Kane/Aguero which is why he gets on the end of so many chances.

I really hope he has a great pre season so Ole knows he can trust him.

Hopefully he has a good pre season and goes into the season full of confidence. He looked a bit hesitant and afraid to try things in his appearances last season. The talent is there but ridiculous to be relying on him for goals, we should have learned by now that getting performances out of our youngsters is a bonus.

I'd say he'll be nearer to 20 appearances than 10. Will probably be more. People underestimate how good a player he already is.

I've never really understood this. If you have the right mentality and talent, you should be able to be thrown in the deep end right off the bat.

What's the risk? Getting mentally scarred from playing too much too soon? At the end of the day, it could be an indicative test of whether that young talent will prevail or not. You either rise to the occasion or crumble. See the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Rashford - none daunted by the prospect of prospect of playing week in week out despite their young age at time.

He'll be a squad player next season and will most likely get around 20 appearances. I don't see him playing just 5-7 games with fleeting appearances here and there. Can see him being a regular option albiet as a backup/rotational player.

With the options we have as RW, won't be surprised if gets more than 10 starts next season. Expect lot more considering cup games, Europa league.
