We pay our players far too much for a club that regularly struggles to qualify for the Champions League. Nobody who is interested can afford our cast offs. Nobody who can afford them is interested in our cast offs.
By having such a ridiculous wage structure, we have ended up carrying deadweight for years.
There was no way Martial was going to leave unless United were willing to lure him into it with a big goodbye pay off.

Same, we know there are limits and issues with the ownership structure and if we're forced to keep him for whatever reason then hopes for any meaningful change under this model will feel even more clearly unrealistic.

Injuries destroyed him. He was probably our best player in 19/20, but then in 20/21 his form fell off spectacularly and he was shit. We later found out he was playing through injury and could barely sprint, but kept playing because Ole told him we needed him. That season ended with a torn knee ligament (not sure if it was the injury he'd been struggling with all season getting worse or if it was a new injury) and he's never been remotely the same since. He's spent the last three and a half years constantly injured and lost a lot of the speed and agility that he had when younger.
In saying that, when he's fit he isn't as bad as most people make out. He had the two terrible seasons of 20/21 and 21/22, but his last two seasons have been...well, not good or anything, but also nowhere near as bad as is often said. A fit Martial still has a fairly strong claim of being our best striker, it's just that a fit Martial is becoming increasingly rare.

From Martial's perspective, it is probably a smart move to stay at United and run down his contract.
If he goes out on loan, chances are he flops, thus lowering his salary value. Better to sit on the bench, or in the wellness room, at United.

Got a pretty similar goal to game average to Rashford since they both played here. Shame he’s been ravaged by injuries for years but can’t be relied on for anything these days. He’s definitely not as bad as people make out but his inability to stay fit/motivated whatever it is however leaves a lot to be desired. Too many people just happy to be here and this culture has to go.
Makes sense for him as he's unlikely to make a good enough impression at any of the teams interested to change ManUtds mind to extend the contract, by staying he can maybe have a purple patch or move some strings at a personal level to get that one year extension.
Anyway by any means we shouldn't extend his contract, he's mostly unavailable due to injures or fitness and when he plays his body language is awful plays like he doesn't care. Waste of wages and promotes an awful culture. Players like this need to go, we have way too many passengers in the team earning top wages which inevitably leads to increase the wages of the squad.
What an idiot, he is obviously in a position to ask for 3-4 years elsewhere and a less demanding league will probably mean the buying team gets a lot out of him. A 4 year contract at whatever wage is going to be worth more in signing bonuses etc. than 6 months here where there is no chance he gets renewed.
He can stay and do nothing for 6 months and get paid an obscene amount or go on loan/sign for a new club on less money and actually have to put some effort in.

I very much doubt any club would be prepared to offer him a 4 year deal at his age and with his injury record over the last couple of years. I also doubt he'll receive an offer as lucrative as the one he'll be on for the remaining 6 months of his deal here.
From his perspective it makes sense to sit tight and take the best deal he can get for himself in the summer if he isn't being pushed out. The security of the contract he has for the next 6 months is probably pretty appealing for someone with his injury record, and if he does get fit our options up front are so poor he'll probably still receive minutes regardless.

There is no reason to not let Martial go if there really is another club willing to accept his contract for the remainder of this season.
If we were pushing for a CL or PL trophy then we'd want the extra pair of boots in case they're ever needed, but we're not in that positions and we're much better off giving Joe Hugill a chance if injuries continue to decimate the squad.

I think shafted is a bit extreme, at best we'd probably only be able to loan him for the 6 months with us covering most of his wages, or just pay off a percentage of contract to leave, both of which don't make much sense.
To expect him to leave and take a reduction in his wages to allow us to get a bit of a transfer fee for him was never going to happen.

I could say the same about Ronaldo. I'm not here defending Hojlund as some inevitable world class striker (I quite like him though), I am here saying Martial is fecking useless and for a team he is atrocious and badly affects every other cog in the machine. That's hardly controversial. It's a shame he's sitting on his contract until summer but it was 100% to be expected. It's not like he'll have decent options now, or even in summer, though he'll likely get some decent retirement money somewhere.

Whether he stays or goes we simply have to put him in the reserves and leave him there until his contract is up in the summer, I’d honestly rather see Hugill and McNeil as back up to Hojlund if we can’t bring in another striker this month as at least those two will put a shift in which is the bare minimum to expect.
