Martial | Di Marzio thinks he will stay

So past 6 seasons: 0 CLs, bottled 4 semifinals in CL. 1 LaLiga in a 2 horse race, being one of the biggest spenders. At the end colossal meltdown, players riot, left. After hiring Zizu, Real Madrid are owning CL; 2CL cups in the semis in third year. Light years ahead of Mou times. Then Chelsea stint: 1 PL, next season 3-4 points above relegation zone. Players riot, sacked. The very next season, Conte walks the league with the team that was left in ruins by Jose. United times: 1 EL which guarantees just participation in CL. Sixth in the league. Inability to manage both EL and the Prem. Fecked up top 4, concentrated on Asecond rate european trophy. Second season out of title race before New Year for two sessons in a row, total feck up in the first knock out round in CL against a team that lost its major players in previous seasons managed by a rookie manager. Having brought 7 players, spent 300+ million quid. Tranfers wise: Bailly inconsistent, Lindelof shaky, Pogba far from Juve form, Matic exhausted, Ibra gone, Mkhi a colossal failure, Sanchez far from Arsenal form and having worse stats than Martial.
And what have all the other EPL greats achieved in that same period?

Just like our fickle fans, the fickle Real fans are actually calling for Zizu to be sacked because they are 15 points behind Barca in the league. You realise that right? Despite him apparently owning the CL, and despite him being a big spender.
Zidane hasn't spent much at Madrid. The biggest transfer they've had was Vinicius JR for 45M euros and he's not going to play for Madrid anytime soon, then you got Morata at 30M. Obviously Madrid's squad still cost a lot of money but Zidane as a manager isn't a big spender so far.

This.

Mourinho's league and CL record, the success he should really be judged on, is heavily concentrated in the first half of his managerial career (2002-10).

In the second half of his career (2010-18) he's won two league titles and not reached a single CL final. And that's with Real Madrid (one of the two wealthiest clubs in Spain), Chelsea (one of the three wealthiest clubs in England and CL winners 12 months before he arrived) and United (another of the three wealthiest clubs in England).

We can all agree that the first half of his managerial career was incredible but the second half has been average, given the clubs he's managed. A bit like Wenger and Brian Clough, it seems he's gone from being an amazing manager to merely a decent one during the latter part of his career.

Obviously if he stays another year with us, I hope he turns it round, like Fergie did after a much shorter fallow period, but I think he'll need to reinvent himself and his approach to do it.

Given your logic, Pep must be on the decline because he's not been to a CL final since 2010 either, despite managing Bayern Munich (the wealthiest club in Germany), and Man City (the wealthiest club in England). So Pep is past his best too right?

You must be part of the prawn sandwhich brigade mate, you seem think to only the biggest clubs have a right to win. You want to live in a world where only the big clubs win every year, and it's expected, not earned.

Nonsense logic and playground insults. A classic Mourinho fanboy's argument.

I just wish we opted for him as our no.9 and built our attack around him instead of Lukaku. With Sanchez on the left behind him I'd wager our movement in the final third would be heaps better.

Brilliant last night. Yes he is sloppy sometimes, but you cant help but be excited when he picks up the ball and starts running at the opposition. Direct, fast great dribbling. Prefer him any day of the week to Sanchez

Who would you have preferred in the second half against City? It was no real surprise that our 3 most gifted players (Sanchez, Pogba and De Gea) made the difference that half to pull off an epic comeback.

Has he gone yet? The Marital FC on here is beyond ridiculous, at least that will disappear when he goes

The difference in attitude and desire on the pitch between him and say someone like Ander and Rashford is a really total contrast

And Mourinho won two trophies last year. Look, there's an entire forum for bashing our manager, can't you go and do it in there?
League Cup and Europa League. Not exactly the dream double is it.

Sorry if this sort of criticism punctures your delusions.

I would be similarly grateful when Mourinho FC goes away after his predictable meltdown and sacking next year.

Martial is someone who will make our football better wherever he plays whether on the left or upfront. When he's on the ball things happen and that's why he's so exciting to watch. I'd also love to see him upfront again. His movement and running in behind would cause teams no end of problems but unfortunately that's not going to happen.

Check Conte in the past 6 years. Check Pep in the past 6 years. Check Allegri if you wish. Check Zizu, basically having the same but a tad bit older squad than Mou at Real and tearing it up in Europe. We will see what Mou does next season after having spent half a billion on 10-11 players. You can also check net spent by managers at clubs and see how they are doing.

I'm happy we signed Lukaku but he shouldn't play every game. He's great against the lesser sides when he can just bully the defenders but he's often struggled against the top sides like City and Spurs. Martial or Rashford would be a great option in those matches, shame Mou doesn't see it that way.

Lukaku was our best player against Liverpool and Chelsea though.

People really still think he’d be a better number 9 than Lukaku...

Arsenal  come on he’s better than that and he knows it.

Conte - 0 CLs, not even a semi, won 3 league titles in a one team league, one EPL, now in 5th in a poor title defence. no longevity, 2 season stint at Chelsea coming to an end.

Allegri - no CL, bottled 2 finals (Jose won his finals, including with his Italian side) winning 3 titles in a one team league,
Pep - 0 CLs bottled the CL semi finals with best Bayern Squad ever, won 3 titles in a one team league, came 3rd with the most expensive squad in the EPL.
Zizu - smashed the CL, 1 La Liga (deffo done better than Mou no arguments)

I honestly believe if given Lukaku's minutes upfront Martial would have had the same number of goals if not more. Lukaku is a top striker. One of the best. But so is Martial. I've called for them to start upfront together like they did at CSKA away and other games where they were linking up with devastating effect. They are the two best strikers we have no doubt. With Rashford very close behind.

If he played with Lukaku he wouldn’t be the 'number 9'.

It's the best option we have for now. I think long term Martial would be better off down the middle but for now the best option is to play him in more in between the lines as a wider forward on the left with license to drift into central areas. Not as a winger which he usually struggles with.

I do agree he’d be better playing closer to Lukaku.

We've already seen glimpses of how it would work. They were both outstanding away at CSKA. And the Watford and Arsenal games I thought they were both very impressive. The link up play and movement between the front 3 of Lukaku, Lingard and Martial was very fluid and interchanging. I don't know why we didn't build on that. That should've been the blueprint to build upon but we ripped it all up again with Sanchez coming in and having to start from scratch again.

You're very much deluding yourself if he goes, they'll be on here posting toxic bile everytime he does something of note in a game. I find it very unhealthy the obsession with 1 player in a team. He's not even our best player and by the looks of it will show no loyalty even by seeing out his first contract!

Are we talking about last 6 seasons? So they did much better than Jose in leagues. Fact. Some reached finals in CL which Jose did not. Fact. Zizu did much better, Fact. Pep has 4 league titles and is breaking all the records in EPL. Hey, Jose finished 6th last season, and what was Chelseas league position when he left them? So, basically all those managers did much better than Jose. Jose is bottling it in both leagues and CL. Ultimate meltdowner. To make it more clear you can draw up a table with league and CL positions. This is it from me regarding Jose in this thread. Mods, my apologies for taking part in derailing this thread. Back to the topic: Martial has bags of talent and needs to stay imo.

He knows he can do better than Arsenal. There were the same rumours about him wanting to go to Arsenal last summer and he said the rumours were rubbish.

Exactly. It's just nonsense. Funny how none of the papers reported anything about Martial and Arsenal and now they casually pushed that line in one of the article.

Why is most of the discussion on here about Mourinhos recent success as a manager. I was hoping for an update on Martials situation.

That's an incredible opinion. Martial is one of the best strikers? Better than a proven goalscorer for club and country? The guy who lacks movement and comes to the ball 95% of the time? The guy who always tries the same shot?

How have you formed that opinion?
