Hoping this thread can be moved to the football forum by the end of the summer.

So, if it wasn't for Moyes dream signing there wouldn’t be a Manchester United midfielder at the World Cup...
If the Belgian coach has any sense he won't play a minute. They have better options there.

Fellaini failed to meet my low expectations of him when signed for us on Panic Day 2013. But if the question is whether to give him a second season, I don't see that we have much choice.

"I have no doubts about Marouane. I don't understand why Manchester United bought him to play him in a system of two No 6s. Marouane is a box-to-box player. The World Cup is a good chance for him to take revenge." Marc Wilmots, Belgium coach

I'm actually really interested to see how he is utilised for Belgium - also seems that Belgium play a similar 4-3-3 system to the one that Louis Van Gaal always plays.

The best we can hope is a good World cup to boost his confidence and an actual pre-season this time with United. I don't see us thinning out our CMs with only 3 other options left now (with Giggs retiring and Anderson most likely leaving), and for all we know van Gaal could get the best out of him. Forget about the fee, forget about his first season and just hope he plays well. If he can't do it under LVG then he can then feck off

From (maybe not entirely accurate) memory of Van Gaal's teams, and his preference for intelligent and hard-working players, I would seriously question whether Fellaini will even get a game next season. Of course he has been one of the main scapegoats of a poor season, but I wouldn't have ever envisaged him being a United player (thanks Moyes).

Agree.

I don’t think Fellaini is a player LVG would choose to have in his team/squad and I think it is only a matter of time before he is sold, how realistic it is we can sell him this summer I am not sure but his passing and technical ability is too limited for him to fit in with how LVG will want the team to play.

If he has a good World Cup we should look to cash in on him, if we bring in 2 new cm’s I see him being 4th choice at best and with no European football he will find it very difficult to get a run in the team so his value will only decrease the longer he is here especially if he is sat on the bench or in the stands on a regular basis. Moyes is his biggest fan but even he left him out a lot and admitted he didn’t buy him to play in every game, so with more competition, a manager who won’t rate him as highly and fewer fixtures Fellaini might find next season even tougher.

Wishful thinking.

Wishful thinking.

Maybe it is wishful thinking but if we bring in 2 new cm’s who go straight into the first 11, which I think is at least a possibility, then Fellaini will be competing with Carrick, Cleverley and Fletcher just to get a place on the bench and if that is the case then it will only be a matter of time before we sell him to raise some money. Let’s be honest our midfield this season has been awful and he still couldn’t hold down a regular place and even if he comes back a more confident and improved player he could find that he has already missed his opportunity because we might actually have some quality midfield players by then.

Early prediction for next season: Marouane Fellaini will shave his head and come back as the Belgian version of Yaya Toure, i.e. barnstorming goal-getter!

Starts in a friendly against Luxembourg tonight.

Having a good match so far in. As we speak he assisted Lukaku for a goal after a good, aggresive reclaiming of possession and playing a through ball to Lukaku.

Adnan's on the bench, might come on in the second half.

Fellaini's been good. I know it's only Luxembourg, but he looks so much better when playing in his natural position with footballers he's familiar with. I've always maintained a good World Cup from him would set him up wonderfully for the new season. Last season was just one set-back after another for not only him, but the entire management and squad.

Pretty much, no 'problems with technique', no 'taking ages to pass the ball' and other bullshit. Completly opposite.

Much of pass and move action, good passing and aggressive tackling that's not resulting in fouls.

I still think the most likely scenario is that we sign one CM who is ready to start, with one of Kagawa, Mata or Rooney becoming the most attacking of a midfield 3, so that leaves one spot left for someone still in the squad, so whichever of Fellaini, Cleverley, Carrick, Fletcher, even Anderson or Valencia can impress LVG on tape, in practice or during the World Cup has a real chance here.

Based on age and pedigree, Fellaini should be the clear favorite, just ahead of Cleverley, due to Carrick's age. Or maybe LVG thinks he's a donkey. Impossible to say.

Imagine how hot and sticky his head will get in the humidity in Brazil.

A good world cup will set us up good to try and squeeze 15M for his transfer

But saying 'he looks better playing in his natural position' etc just means that he's too inflexible to fit into our midfield. We need someone much more versatile, not a below average utility player. Its not just one bad season under an inept manager who signed him (and should have known how best to use him), he was the wrong sort of player for our style of football. I don't know, maybe Van Gaal sees something he can work with, but if Moyes couldn't, then maybe he'll just sell him. And I also think Belgium are a bit overrated, good team, good group of players but not at the same level as the top teams.

No one in our team bar De Gea had a good season, they all played poorly including Fellaini but he got more stick as he was a new signing. As far as I'm concerned it's a clean slate for them all next year.

The players who aren't getting stick are the ones that have shown quality in title-winning seasons. Ashley Young gets just as much stick as Fellaini and he's actually shown a lot more here than the Belgian.

Belgium will most probably face Germany or Portugal in the last 16 if I am not mistaken. Will be fun wathching Fellaini against those teams and midfields. We can then also witness him losing headers again against Lahm!

Who are they, then?

I would struggle to think of any United player other than De Gea that didn't get stick in the season just gone. Some more than others but mainly on the basis of this season's form, rather than how they've played in previous seasons.

Equally, Fellaini never had the opportunity to show "quality in a title-winning season" so it's a little unfair to hold that against him, isn't it?

Hopefully Moyes will sign at Celtic this summer and will put a double swoop for him and Cleverley ha ha

No, seriously, I saw the Belgium game last night and he was never in defensive position... Everytime Begium had the ball, he bombed forward... sorry in the box waiting for a cross. Once Belgium will play a stronger team than Algeria, or Russia, he will be seriously in difficulties, like this season with us.

He's not a Manchester United player, he doesn't deserve to play for us.

He looked like a different player last night, not sure if that was to do with inferior opposition or superior players around him but I was impressed. He's basically had a good rest all season so is going to the World Cup fresh and fit. He'll be a handful for any team defending set pieces with Kompany, Vertonghen, Witsel, Lukaku, Vermaelen or Van Buyten all dangerous in the air too.

Presumably that explains why Wilmotts thinks he was being misused at United.

He still obviously rates and picks him, though. For a very good team. So it's still possible he's being under-rated by United fans.

I'm more talking about the sort of 'he's not good enough, we need to ship him out' type of thing. The most common names mentioned would be him and Young. Cleverley maybe...

It maybe is unfair but there's nothing about Fellaini that would suggest that he could fit into a title-winning squad at this club. He's a decent player in the right system but he's not going to get that here and I really don't see the point in keeping him here.

Fair enough. You wouldn't be in a minority with that opinion either.

Personally, I'm hoping he has a brilliant WC and comes back fit and full of confidence. In that scenario I think he might yet prove good enough for United. I appreciate it's a long shot though.

I hope you're right but people really only gave up on Anderson this season I think, every other year we heard how he has unfulfilled potential and might end up good enough.. now we're stuck with a player on big wages that has no real value.
