They didn't bid at all though. Even after it expired. Don't forget we didn't get him until the 11th hour (literally). They did bid for Cabaye even if it was a penny pinching bid. I refuse to believe Wenger would ever buy Fellaini.

They were interested, which means Arsenal enquired how much Everton valued Fellaini. They obviously didn't bid because they didn't value Fellaini at the price Everton were asking for, but that's not to say Arsenal wouldn't have bought him.

They put in a 10M bid for Cabaye, for God's sake. I doubt they would have wanted to spend much more than that on Fellaini, hence why they didn't make an official bid.

How many CMs do you want us to buy at one go? And no, he wont be sitting on the bench all year, he's at United competing with the likes of Carrick, Clev and Fletch. Not at Bayern. He'l get plenty of games.

And which are these young lads that are ready to make the step up to the 1st team?
Two. I want us to buy two. That's not a lot. Carrick, Fletch & Cleverley are better players than he is, for the type of football that I want to see United playing. So they can all stay. But buy two top class midfielders to be the main men. Fellaini still has some value, albeit about half what we overpaid for him, so recoup that now. If we were to sell Clev too, I wouldn't be overly upset. Powell is one who I think is worth a shot - ok, he's not a prototypical central midfield player, but he's a young player who deserves a chance. Keeping dead weight like Fellaini just stands in his way, and we'll never know what we have in him until we try him.

Fletch and Carrick are both towards the tail end of their careers. We need to consider their ages before making such calls.

Also, why not actually give him the chance to show what he can do? He's a decent player as he's shown. The problem starts when people expect him to be our savior in midfield, see him as a squad player and you'l see he's clearly good enough and also versatile to cover multiple roles.

Yes, he is of squad player ability. But we spent too much money on him. As a squad player, his value is only going to decrease, so I think we should sell him now, while we might get a bit over half back what we paid. For squad players, I'd rather the likes of Powell etc are given a shot. Anderson is also still quite young, and in my opinion a better player than Fellaini.

I've seen what Fellaini can do in the Premier League, and he's not a good enough player for United in my opinion. His style of play is not suited to the style of play that I want to see us playing. I don't agree that he's good at fast passing football, I don't agree that he does a good job as a defensive midfielder, and I don't agree that he is a good box to box player. He's very average at all of those jobs. His best trait is being played close to the front men and causing trouble with his height and awkwardness, and general scrappy attitude. That's not what I want from a United side.

I agree, Carrick and Fletch are comign to the end. But they're better. So they should stay. They can do a squad job, bring in 2 players to be the main men, and have some young players also around the squad for bench positions, and chances to grow and learn. In my opinion it's a waste of a spot, keeping him.

Fwiw, I dont fully disagree with you. If a team came in with a 15mil bid, I'd be tempted. Just that I want him to be given the chance to actually show how good he is because it'd cost us anyways to get a replacement in and if we've actually given him a contract worth 100k a week, we're not going to get 15mil for him.

That said, no he isnt very average as a defensive mid or a box to box player and he's shown that this season. He's clearly good enough to play a squad role as he's shown this season specially when we arent up against top teams.

I do feel that he's very average at both of those roles, personally. Fair enough though if you think differently. I think he's had about 2 decent games this year, one was against WBA, one ... can't remember who else, but someone else at the bottom. I agree that he's fine for a squad role, but, and this is the key for me - he's too expensive for that. I don't want a 100K squad player. I also think that if he's mostly a squad player (and I think we're pretty much both agreed that he is?) then he'll only depreciate in value. The odd game against the bottom clubs, or in the cups is not going to let him shine, and not going to improve his value. And it's also going to stunt the growth of young players who may or may not have the potential to become top class.

I've seen enough of him for Everton and now for us to know what we have in him. And to me, that's not good enough for United. I don't think he's as good as any of the other regular players we have in there (Carrick, Cleverley, Fletcher, even Giggs at his age!) and I really don't feel he ever will be.

I hope I'm wrong. Just like I hope Cleverley blossoms under whoever comes in, or Welbeck becomes a top quality striker etc etc. I don't want players to fail at United. But I just think that we should be trying to sell him.

Over the next 2 seasons I think we need to offload all of our current midfield either because they will be too old or are not good enough. I would hope we are looking to bring in two quality midfield players over the summer so it would be excessive to retain Cleverley, fellaini, anderson, fletcher, giggs and carrick. Fellaini and Cleverley are the only 2 worth any money so if we receive decent offers they should both be out the door ASAP so we can raise funds to bring in some younger players especially when they are both only squad players at best.

Absolutely spot on.

Well I mean, that's because Fellaini has been deployed as a box-to-box midfielder for the most part, Fletcher and Carrick have played as holding midfielders. I'm sure Fellaini will get another chance next season, mainly because of how weak our midfield still is.

Sorry but like many others, I just don't see it. He's not any better than what we already have and say what you like about our midfield, but they have been part of a title winning side. Yes, we need better now but Fellaini is not good enough and definitely not the answer.

A box to box midfielder is mobile, skilful, energetic and defensively sound. Fellaini is none of these things. Against top midfields he's never gonna be good enough cos he cannot compete with them.

You obviously haven't read all my posts, not sure why you're apologizing.

I'd be pleased if I never saw him in a United shirt again.

Moyes really fecked us in just 10 months.

Fellaini will be sold for less than half what we bought him for next summer. Mark my words.

Me too. It's amazing the damage Moyes did in such a short time. Tried to dismantle our style of play, told the squad they were past it and took away their confidence. He even passed on signing midfielders like Thiago and Strootman and bought this clown instead!!

As I said, if someone came in with 15mil and agreed to pay his wages, I'd think of moving him on. But only if we actually buy 3 CMs this summer or atleast 2. If we get just 1 in, there's absolutely no point selling Fellaini. This inspite rating him as good enough to be a squad player fwiw.

He didn't pass on Thiago. As soon as Pep went to Bayern and showed interest it was going to be INCREDIBLY difficult to get him here.

Strootman? I wanted that Lucio/RVP lookalike ever since I heard the rumours. :(

I am still in the apparent minority that thinks he will come good.

With that said, he is never going to be first name on the team sheet, and we should still be looking for at least 2 new CMs. It wouldn't particularly upset me if Fellaini were to leave, but he is better than some here are giving him credit for, he hasn't shown it for us yet, but very few if any of our outfield players have shown anything this season.

That I seem to remember is exactly right. Perhaps he could have got him had he gone in quickly and made a big play for him, but once the dithering started, there was no hope.

I think we will sell him this summer. There will be plenty of midtable teams with £15m+ to take him. He's no United player but he'd be an ideal signing for West Ham or Stoke.

I agree. IF someone brought a sum like that to the table, then i think we would be smart in selling.

It's actually kinda depressing that Carrick atm is our best midfielder, and he has been absolute wank this year compared to last year.

no matter how one values Fellaini it was apparent from day one that he would be 4/5th choice CM once we get our transfer targets. He had a role to play this season and he failed miserably.

If we get our transfer right there will be little to no room for him in this team.

Wrong, he did. The deal was in place and Moyes thought he wasn't suited to the premier league. That's according to Guillem Balague, the Guardian and other sources

So Moyes organised a deal and then just decided that he'll change his mind because he isn't suited to the EPL? Or are you saying Woodward went and organised the deal and then told Moyes it was good to go? Because if that is what you are saying that that is just pointless and a clear lack of communication. I doubt the club wouldn't at least ask Moyes for his opinion before setting a deal up.

There was lengthy discussion between United and Thiago's father (also acts as his agent) prior to Moyes becoming manager. United asked Graham Hunter (journalist who covers Barca and Spanish football) for his contact details because they are/were neighbours in Barcelona (mentioned on Hunter's twitter). As others have stated, there appeared to be a deal in place. There was a buy-out clause since Thiago hadn't featured in a certain number of matches. Moyes turned it down because he thought he could get Fabregas and he wasn't convinced Thiago could cope with the PL. As to whether Thiago would have actually signed for United before checking with Pep and Bayern, we will never know.

United had been following Thiago for a while and felt he might leave Barca due to a lack of playing opportunities.

As for Fellaini, I'd accept any offer above £10m. Might even be prepared to accept £8m. His style of play is a poor match for United. I'd rather use Carrick or Fletcher for a few games over the next couple of seasons, then either promote a younger player to be a squad player or bring in a potential starter.

I know its not possible in real life, but were I taking on this United squad in FM2015, he would be the first one I would be transfer listing> accept all offers above 100k.
In real life I would be telling him he had no future here and telling him and his agent to find a club.

I don't really get what he's saying. He's not being employed as a holding player, or an auxiliary centre half, as he's suggesting. He's clearly been deployed as a box-to-box player for us, with either Fletcher or Carrick being deeper. He spends a lot of time ahead of the ball and pops up on the flanks in the opposition half a lot and makes attempts to get into the box. I don't see how his role for us can be described as anything other than box-to-box.

Also, whilst I'm in this thread, I would like to debunk the myth that somehow Fellaini is this really ambitious, forward passing player. Compare his pass map against Palace (one of his better games)

It's only one example but Fellaini being a positive passer is the other side of the Carrick myth of being a sideways passer.

No I said the deal was already in place and Moyes dithered and said no. It's quite simple. I didn't say he organised anything. So what if Woodward organised it or it was done before last summer. Clubs do this all the time.

And considering Moyes chose to buy Fellaini for our midfield over Thiago and Strootman, then his opinion really isn't worth much anyway. He could not see these two players were much better options.

Thaigo said this and I quote "The truth is that in no moment did United come to us and talk to us. It came from the press, it was always a lie,"

He has played games as more of a holding player, in fact I would say his better performances have been in that position - there were also a couple of games where he played the first half very defensively and was then pushed further forward later in the game.

They are interesting comments from the Belgian manager as he obviously sees him a box to box midfielder in his successful team - they do play differently with more of a 4-3-3 I think.

We have been using as a box to box midfielder, though. Maybe it's the fact that we play a complete different system to Belgium, and that Fellaini is partnered with midfielders who have contrasting attributes.

I would personally play Fellaini as a no.6. I think if we are going to get the best out of him, though, we need to be looking to get a dynamic ball player next to him, in my opinion.

In Wilmots' Belgium, Fellaini's weaknesses are taken of by Witsel and the attacking midfielder (Chadli, Defour, de Bruyne, etc.). With us, however, he's responsible for doing more than just going back and forth and being a nuisance to the opposition defence. He doesn't have a midfield partner like Witsel, here, and a 3rd midfielder who can make up for his weaknesses.

As Walters said, if he has a dynamic ball player next to him, he can do well. He has that in Witsel for Belgium. With us, however, he doesn't have someone taking care of all of his weaknesses.

Fellaini does not have the engine to play box-to-box. He gets caught upfield far too much when the opposition then attack. Also the meaning of box-to-box seems to be lost on either Moyes or him or both. In these games where he is deployed as such, he spends half the time on the flanks, sometimes staying higher up than our strikers and just waits for a lump towards him. Honestly it seemed clear Moyes was trying to use him as target man and then take it forward from where he chests the ball down. Basically employ him how he employed him at Everton most times. When he did play as a DM against lower wrung teams he looked decent but was like a deer caught in a headlight against any half decent midfield who played with pace and guile.

I wouldn't mind him having another shot under LvG as he could improve under LvG's reign but I am not 100% sold he would.

What do you mean by doesnt have the engine to play box to box?. Stamina? In some of the opta stat reports he was covering more distance in games than anyone else on the pitch.

He loiters around on the pitch. He does not actually go around bursting with pace. That's what I meant. He may be covering a lot of ground but he mostly jogs. Does not have the burst of pace which is needed. Also does not work hard enough frankly to play in that role.

Is Fellaini the biggest flop this season? Or one of Spurs new recruits?
